Book Climate of Reno Nevada

Download or read book Climate of Reno Nevada written by Brian F. O'Hara and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reno is located in far-west central Nevada in the lee of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Reno is on the boundary between two distinct climatic regimes. The first regime is the dry high desert climate of the western Great Basin. The second regime is that of the alpine Sierra Nevada. Both regimes greatly influence Reno's climate. As a result of its location in the high desert of the Great Basin, Reno experiences large temperature ranges on both a diurnal and an annual scale. During the summer afternoon highs are often above 90° F, but at night the air mass can cool down into the 50s. In the last five or six years however, nighttime lows during July and early August sometimes do not make it below 65° F. As will be seen in the tables in the Temperature section below, this warming trend has been seen in summer high temperatures, but not to the extent that it is reflected in the nighttime temperatures."--Introduction.

Download or read book Neon Nevada written by Peter Laufer and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no neon to match Nevada’s. The combination of Wild West mythology and the remaining untamed pitch-black nighttime landscape, replete with real cowboys and real gambling, makes the Silver State a unique and appropriate canvas for neon art. Modern Nevada began with a nonstop desire for riches. It continues for many as a state of dreams often vividly expressed through exploding neon. Neon Nevada brings all this alive. Cameras in hand, authors Sheila Swan and Peter Laufer embarked on their first Nevada neon trek in the 1970s. They followed this up with a second nocturnal treasure hunt in the early 1990s—and a third in 2010, in the course of which they discovered that neon is fading fast; most notably on the Las Vegas Strip. Most of all, though, they realized that their passion for the art and craft of neon had not waned. A compelling blend of full-color photographs and absorbing prose, Neon Nevada takes us on a literal and figurative journey not only down the Las Vegas strip but also down quiet two-lane roads punctuated occasionally with neon signs, those glittering beacons of civilization against the desert night sky. The authors talk with sign owners, with those who created and maintained the neon, and those who collect it.

Book Lakes and Watersheds in the Sierra Nevada of California

Download or read book Lakes and Watersheds in the Sierra Nevada of California written by John M. Melack and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sierra Nevada, California’s iconic mountain range, harbors thousands of remote high-elevations lakes from which water flows to sustain agriculture and cities. As climate and air quality in the region change, so do the watershed processes upon which these lakes depend. In order to understand the future of California’s ecology and natural resources, we need an integrated account of the environmental processes that underlie these aquatic systems. Synthesizing over three decades of research on the lakes and watersheds of the Sierra Nevada, this book develops an integrated account of the hydrological and biogeochemical systems that sustain them. With a focus on Emerald Lake in Sequoia National Park, the book marshals long-term limnological and ecological data to provide a detailed and synthetic account, while also highlighting the vulnerability of Sierra lakes to changes in climate and atmospheric deposition. In so doing, it lays the scientific foundations for predicting and understanding how the lakes and watersheds will respond.

Book 9 M y Record of Southern Nevada Climate from Yucca Mountain Secondary Minerals

Download or read book 9 M y Record of Southern Nevada Climate from Yucca Mountain Secondary Minerals written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yucca Mountain, Nevada, is presently the object of intense study as a potential permanent repository for the Nation's high-level radioactive wastes. The mountain consists of a thick sequence of volcanic tuffs within which the depth to water table ranges from 500 to 700 meters below the land surface. This thick unsaturated zone (UZ), which would host the projected repository, coupled with the present day arid to semi-arid climate, is considered a favorable attribute of the site. Evaluation of the site includes defining the relation between climate variability, as the input function or driver of site- and regional-scale ground-water flow, and the possible future transport and release of radionuclides to the accessible environment. Secondary calcite and opal have been deposited in the UZ by meteoric waters that infiltrated through overlying soils and percolated through the tuffs. The oxygen isotopic composition ([delta][sup 18]O values) of these minerals reflect contemporaneous meteoric waters and the[delta][sup 13]C values reflect soil organic matter, and hence the resident plant community, at the time of infiltration. Recent U/Pb age determinations of opal in these occurrences, coupled with the[delta][sup 13]C values of associated calcite, allow broadbrush reconstructions of climate patterns during the past 9 M.y.
