Book Models and Measurements Intercomparison II

Download or read book Models and Measurements Intercomparison II written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Models and measurements intercomparison II (MM II) summarizes the intercomparison results from model simulations and observations of stratospheric species. Representatives from 23 modeling groups using 29 models participated in these MM II excercises between 1996 and 1999. Twelve of the models were two-dimensional zonal-mean models while 17 were three-dimensional models. This was an international effort as seven were from outside the U.S.A. Six transport experiments and five chemistry experiments were designed for various models. Models participating in the transport experiments performed simulations of chemically inert tracers providing diagnostics for transport. The chemistry experiments involved simulating the distributions of chemically active trace gases including ozone.

Book Radioactivity in the Environment

Download or read book Radioactivity in the Environment written by Vlado Valkovic and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-09-26 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous sources of ionizing radiation can lead to human exposure: natural sources, nuclear explosions, nuclear power generation, use of radiation in medical, industrial and research purposes, and radiation emitting consumer products. Before assessing the radiation dose to a population one requires a precise knowledge of the activity of a number of radionuclides. The basis for the assessment of the dose to a population from a release of radioactivity to the environment, the estimation of the potential clinical heath effects due to the dose received and, ultimately, the implementation of countermeasures to protect the population, is the measurement of radioactive contamination in the environment after the release. It is the purpose of this book to present the facts about the presence of radionuclides in the environment, natural and man made. There is no aspect of radioactivity, which has marked the passing century, not mentioned or discussed in this book.

Book Handbook of Atmospheric Science

Download or read book Handbook of Atmospheric Science written by C. Nick Hewitt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alarming consequences of global climate change have highlighted the need to take urgent steps to combat the causes of air pollution. Hence, understanding the Earth's atmosphere is a vital component in Man's emerging quest for developing sustainable modes of behaviour in the 21st century. Written by a team of expert scientists, the Handbook of Atmospheric Science provides a broad and up-to-date account of our understanding of the natural processes that occur within the atmosphere. It examines how Man’s activities have had a detrimental effect on the climate, and how measures may be implemented in order to modify these activities. The book progresses through chapters covering the principles of atmospheric science and the current problems of air pollution at the urban, regional and global scales, to the tools and applications used to understand air pollution. The Handbook of Atmospheric Science offers an excellent overview of this multi-disciplinary subject and will prove invaluable to both students and researchers of atmospheric science, air pollution and global change.

Book Isotope Techniques in the Study of Environmental Change

Download or read book Isotope Techniques in the Study of Environmental Change written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a symposium on Isotope Techniques in the Study of Past and Current Environmental Changes in the Hydrosphere and the Atmosphere, Vienna, 14-18 April 1997. The symposium was structured in five sessions of oral presentations, a poster session and a round table discussion that focused on trends and future requirements in isotope hydrology and on applications in climate and environmental research. The major themes covered by the presentations included the use of isotopic tracers in studies of atmospheric and hydrospheric changes and of human impacts on water and the environment. Special emphasis was placed on isotopic archives of climatic and environmental change. Some contributions addressed new technical approaches.

Book The Global Carbon Cycle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Heimann
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 3642846084
  • Pages : 596 pages

Download or read book The Global Carbon Cycle written by Martin Heimann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of a NAill Advanced Study Institute on the contemporary glo bal carbon cycle, held in n Ciocco, Italy, September 8-20, 1991. The motivation for this ASI originated from recent controversial findings regarding the relative roles of the ocean and the land biota in the current global balance of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Consequently, the pur pose of this institute was to review, among leading experts in the field, the multitude of known constraints on the present day global carbon cycle as identified by the fields of meteorology, physical and biological oceanography, geology and terrestrial biosphere sciences. At the same time the form of an Advanced Study Institute was chosen, thus providing the opportunity to convey the information in tutorial form across disciplines and to young researchers entering the field. The first three sections of this book contain the lectures held in II Ciocco. The first sec tion reviews the atmospheric, large-scale global constraints on the present day carbon cycle including the emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel use and it provides a brief look into the past. The second section discusses the role of the terrestrial biosphere and the third the role of the ocean in the contemporary global carbon cycle.
