The influence of climate change on fire hazards is diverse and complex and varies by region. Regional studies provide a more local perspective on the changing climate. In this study, the fire threat in the Southeast United States is investigated and the association between soil dryness and lightning-ignited wildfires in the Apalachicola National Forest (ANF) is examined. The relationship between pre-fire season dryness and the number of fires during the fire season is quantified with a statistical model. Soil dryness in the duff layer is estimated using the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) which is a measure of moisture deficit based on temperature and net rainfall computed using daily summary-of-the-day values from the nearby first-order weather station. The probability of daily wildfire occurrence in the ANF is found to increase by 27% for every centimeter increase in daily soil moisture deficit and by 14% for every 100 daily lightning strikes. Given the strong statistical relationship between the KBDI during April and wildfires in the ANF from May to July, a seasonal prediction model is constructed to skillfully portend the occurrence of wildfires. Results show nearly a 20% increase in the average rate of wildfires from May through July for every one-centimeter increase in soil moisture deficit during April. Long-term upward trends in soil dryness are also shown, with the trend most pronounced during the driest months. This analysis indicates the potential for a greater risk of fires in the ANF in the future. Finally, the opportunity for future work is highlighted, and another model is proposed to further distinguish between a season with many small fires versus a season with a few big fires.

Ingalls in Plumas county, the incidence is about one fire per 10 square miles per year. In northeastern California generally, three-fourths of all lightning-caused forest fires occur in July, August, and September, and two-thirds start between 1 and 6 p.m. These, and other details of lightning-fire incidence on public and private lands were established from tabulation of individual fire reports, as part of a research project supported by the Division of Forestry, California Department of Natural Resources.

Book excerpt: Agriculture, fire suppression, and urbanization have drastically altered natural forest processes and conditions since humankind settled in the Southeastern United States. Today, many of South Carolina's forests are dense and overstocked, with high fuel loads. These conditions increase the susceptibility of forests to southern pine beetle attack and wildfire. These threats are further complicated by rapid urbanization and forest fragmentation, processes that are increasing South Carolina's wildland-urban interface at a rapid rate. Prescribed fire is an effective, economical, and widely used tool for reducing fuel loads and encouraging desired vegetative communities in forest landscapes. However, research into the effects of prescribed fire often generates more questions than answers. This paper considers fire effects on soil erosion, nutrients, and vegetation from a historical perspective. We examined historical fire regimes, land use changes, and fire research. The majority of literature indicates that soil erosion does not occur unless a severe climatic event follows prescribed fire. There is also evidence of a fertilization effect in the soil following prescribed fire, although this is typically of short duration and accompanied by some nutrient loss in the forest floor. Effects of prescribed fire on the productivity, composition, and regeneration of vegetation are more complex and ambiguous. Effects are primarily determined by antecedent local conditions and fire severity and intensity. Knowledge of past land use and fire's biological and historical roles in land use change can support effective decision making. This knowledge will provide guidance for sustainable management of forest resources and reduction of hazardous forest fuel conditions.
