Book Opportunities to Improve Marine Forecasting

Download or read book Opportunities to Improve Marine Forecasting written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commerce and the general publicâ€"especially those living in increasingly crowded, highly developed low-lying coastal communitiesâ€"rely heavily on accurate forecasts of marine conditions and weather over the oceans to ensure the safe and productive use of the sea and coastal zone. This book examines the opportunities to improve our ocean forecasting systems made possible by new observational techniques and high-speed computers. Significant benefits from these potential improvements are possible for transportation, ocean energy and resources development, fisheries and recreation, and coastal management.

Book Delivery of climate services to last mile users challenges and opportunities for scaling

Download or read book Delivery of climate services to last mile users challenges and opportunities for scaling written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the challenges and opportunities for scaling up delivery of climate services to last mile users and describes the baseline assessment results of the project “Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information Systems (SAMIS) to improve adaptation to climate change and food security in Lao PDR”. After a methodological introduction, the book describes how households were accessing weather news. Further to this, the use of loudspeakers as a source of weather information is described, including use of weather news from loudspeakers, use of weather information, challenges to use of advisories, suggestions for improving advisories, sources of support for farmers, and type of support provided to farmers. The book also studies the farmers who did not access advisories, including their challenges in accessing advisories from loudspeakers, preferred channels for receiving advisories, and interests in loudspeaker-delivered advisories from farmers who have not accessed advisories. Finally, the book analyse suggestions for improving dissemination through loudspeakers. The results show that loudspeakers have a wide reach and are valued by farmers, and it is used when choosing crop variety. Those who have access to both farmer field schools and loudspeakers are more likely to adjust their planting schedule, while farmers who get their information only from loudspeakers often change their water management practices.

Book Making Climate Forecasts Matter

Download or read book Making Climate Forecasts Matter written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: El Nino has been with us for centuries, but now we can forcast it, and thus can prepare far in advance for the extreme climatic events it brings. The emerging ability to forecast climate may be of tremendous value to humanity if we learn how to use the information well. How does society cope with seasonal-to-interannual climatic variations? How have climate forecasts been usedâ€"and how useful have they been? What kinds of forecast information are needed? Who is likely to benefit from forecasting skill? What are the benefits of better forecasting? This book reviews what we know about these and other questions and identifies research directions toward more useful seasonal-to-interannual climate forecasts. In approaching their recommendations, the panel explores: Vulnerability of human activities to climate. State of the science of climate forecasting. How societies coevolved with their climates and cope with variations in climate. How climate information should be disseminated to achieve the best response. How we can use forecasting to better manage the human consequences of climate change.

Book Climate Variability Climate Change and Fisheries

Download or read book Climate Variability Climate Change and Fisheries written by Michael H. Glantz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-05-07 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of the twentieth century, public and scientific attention is focusing increasingly on the detection and assessment of changes in our environment. This unique volume addresses the potential implications of global warming for fisheries and the societies which depend on them. Using a 'forecasting by analogy' approach, which draws upon experiences from the recent past in coping with regional fluctuations in the abundance or availability of living marine resources, it is shown how we might be able to assess our ability to respond to the consequences of future environmental changes induced by a potential global warming. The book takes the form of a series of integrated case studies from around the globe, which are presented by an interdisciplinary group of leading researchers. This important and thought-provoking volume will be of interest to a wide range of scientists working in the fields of biology, marine and environmental science, climatology, economics and anthropology, as well as resource managers and policy makers concerned with the health and future of living marine resources.

Book Impacts of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture

Download or read book Impacts of climate change on fisheries and aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-01-06 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report indicates that climate change will significantly affect the availability and trade of fish products, especially for those countries most dependent on the sector, and calls for effective adaptation and mitigation actions encompassing food production.

Book Future Climate Change and Regional Fisheries

Download or read book Future Climate Change and Regional Fisheries written by Gary Duane Sharp and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication considers issues of global change versus global warming, using climate history graphics to illustrate the earth's climate variability from paleoclimate research. Topics discussed include: the hydrological cycle and its relevance to fisheries and the evolution of species and fisheries variability, production variabilities and changes in vulnerability owing to constant dynamics of ocean motion affects, bioindicators, spatial and temporal scales, regional ecological responses, examples of ocean ecosystems defined by seasonal thermal properties, synchrony and systematic transitions.

Book Report of the PICES ICES Working Group on Forecasting Climate Change Impacts on Fish and Shellfish

Download or read book Report of the PICES ICES Working Group on Forecasting Climate Change Impacts on Fish and Shellfish written by North Pacific Marine Science Organization. PICES/ICES Working Group on Forecasting Climate Change Impacts on Fish and Shellfish and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 2008, the North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) approved the formation of an interdisciplinary Working Group on Forecasting Climate Change Impacts on Fish and Shellfish (WG-FCCIFS). This Working Group was designed to enagage the PICES and ICES scientific communities in an effort to discuss and assess our current understanding of the implications of climate change on marine fish and fisheries. The group was quite active, and the products of WG-FCCIFS include one major scientific symposium, a symposium volume and several peer reviewed journal articles. WG-FCCIFS's primary accomplishments and research findings are described in this report. The group promoted research on climate change impacts on marine ecosystems by scientists in PICES and ICES member countries through coordinated communication, exchange of methodology, and organization of meetings to discuss and publish results. In collaboration with relevant expert groups in PICES and ICES, WG-FCCIFS developed frameworks and methodologies for projecting the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, with particular emphasis on shifts in the distribution, abundance and production of commercial fish and shellfish. WG-FCCIFS members met to review the results of designated case studies to test methods. Given the limitations of our forecasts, they also explored techniques for estimating and communicating uncertainty in forecasts and strategies for research and management under climate change scenarios. As the 3-year term for WG-FCCIFS approached, it was clear that PICES and ICES were well positioned to serve as world leaders in advancing science on assessments of climate change impacts on marine ecosystems. This recognition led to the formaton of the ICES Strategic Initiative on Climate Change Effects on Marine Ecosystems (SICCME), referred to as the Section on Climate Change Effects on Marine Ecosystems (S-CCME) within PICES."--Executive summary.
