The time, moreover, seems ripe for such an endeavor, for there is a growing appreciation both on the part of the profession and the public at large as to the value of climate in the prevention and treatment of disease, and fortunately to answer this awakening we have now accumulated accurate and extended meteorological observations upon which to found natural laws affording trustworthy conclusions. In the endeavor to accomplish the purpose above outlined the author has collated and compared climatic observations from all parts of the world up to the present time, and has sought to systematize the work of others with his own experience. It is hardly too much to say that it is possible to prescribe a climate with as much precision as a drug, and with far greater effect in appropriate cases. If the present volume contributes to the establishment of climatology in its proper place as one of the most definite and useful of the medical sciences, its purpose will be fulfilled. European nations have long since recognized the therapeutic and financial value of their health-resorts, but Americans are only now coming to appreciate the equal resources of their own continent. The meteorological tables have received several important additions and amendments. Since the publication of the last edition, I have continued to receive from numerous medical friends, and others, who had resided some time abroad for their health, the most satisfactory assurances of the accuracy of my descriptions of the different climates, and their influence on disease. My own additional experience has been in perfect accordance with this testimony. Madeira is almost the only place respecting which statements do not quite agree; but after carefully weighing all the information which I have received, I have not found sufficient reason to change my opinion of the climate of that island. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climatic Treatment of Disease: Western North Carolina as a Health Resort Based upon the belief that an aseptic atmosphere is of the first importance in the selection of a climate for the benefit of sufferers from a certain class of diseases, examinations of the atmosphere have been carefully made to demonstrate its purity. Miguel and Freudenreich found that microphytes were rare at 800 metres, and absolutely wanting-at metres above the sea level. For physical reasons, high alti tudes have been believed to be beneficial in early phthisis, and, influenced by the later demonstrationsof a bacillary cause, this aseptic state of the atmos phere is theoretically accepted as promising good results, and sanitary. Stations for mountain-air treat ment of consumptives have been established at sev eral selected points in the Alps, where the comforts of home life are furnished to invalids. Of these health resorts, Davos and St. Moritz are the most popular. St. Moritz is feet and Davosis over feet above the sea level, and the latter has become noted for winter treatment, although the average temperature from November to March' is only 23° F. The number of visitors at Davos last winter was over and careful provision is made for home comfort. The patients are urged to be active out of doors within the limit of fatigue. Each year adds to the number of invalids resorting to these mountain sanitaria, and the statistics show good re sults. It should, however, be borne in mind that the cases sent to these resorts are those selected in the incipient stages of disease, and this is to be taken into the account in the deductions that the recoveries average one-fourth also the time elapsing after the treatment has been too short to determine with accuracy the results. This pertains in criticism to the statistics of other similar localities, but it is by no means an easy task to secure satisfac tory data, and such a problem can never be subjected to a matliematicala analysis. Here, you have the opportunity to question and cross-question the reporters, and not only thus to arrive at the truth, but, what the books seldom give, the whole truth. All of these indi viduals were intelligent and educated people, most of them invalids who had traveled the world over in search of health, and tested its renowned sanitary resorts, some of them winter after winter. Few of them had any particular prejudice for or against any special locality, save from its actual effect, but were, from self-interest, in search of the best.
