Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Resorts: With Notes Upon Their Climate If we, as a people, would more generally seek health in our own sanitaria, and our medical men would encourage their patients so to do, the value of these places of retreat for health would soon be appreciated and their fame become widespread. For the American, the health stations in his own land are preferable in that while he is seeking benefit in a change of climate, he is at home among his own countrymen, familiar customs, language and diet, a truly inestimable advantage in many cases of sickness. This book does not aim at a scientific consideration of the subject of climatology, but has been prepared in the hope that it may be of some practical service to the numerous health seekers in search of information regarding our climate and health resorts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principal Southern and Swiss Health Resorts: Their Climate and Medical Aspect ON 'my return to London, after spending three Winter seasons at Nice and six at Cannes, engaged in medical practice, it occurred to me that the experience I had acquired of the influence of southern climates on invalids might form the main subject of a book not altogether wanting in medical and public utility. A Visit to Madeira and the Canary Islands afforded me an opportunity of inquiring into the character of these stations as health resorts, While a. Long acquaintance With many of the places in Switzerland, patronised by invalide in search of health, has enabled me to include them also in the present work. Book A Handbook of Medical Climatology

Download or read book A Handbook of Medical Climatology written by S. Edwin Solly and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Medical Climatology: Embodying Its Principles and Therapeutic Application With Scientific Data of the Chief Health Resorts of the World The non-existence of a systematic treatise on medical climatology, and the fact that this subject has engaged the author's attention for thirty years, may be advanced as the reasons for the preparation of this volume. The time, moreover, seems ripe for such an endeavor, for there is a growing appreciation both on the part of the profession and the public at large as to the value of climate in the prevention and treatment of disease, and fortunately to answer this awakening we have now accumulated accurate and extended meteorological observations upon which to found natural laws affording trustworthy conclusions. In the endeavor to accomplish the purpose above outlined the author has collated and compared climatic observations from all parts of the world up to the present time, and has sought to systematize the work of others with his own experience. It is hardly too much to say that it is possible to prescribe a climate with as much precision as a drug, and with far greater effect in appropriate cases. If the present volume contributes to the establishment of climatology in its proper place as one of the most definite and useful of the medical sciences, its purpose will be fulfilled. European nations have long since recognized the therapeutic and financial value of their health-resorts, but Americans are only now coming to appreciate the equal resources of their own continent. The United States Government observations have been conducted with wisdom, and in connection with the special climatic studies of physicians have now covered practically the entire country. Have you a troublesome cough? Is your throat disagreeably affected by each change of weather? Are your nerves unstrung? If thus afflicted, try the "climate cure," which consists of taking up one's residence in a place where the air is dry, pure, warm and equable, and where proper medical attendance and nursing may be had if needed. Nature is the best of physicians when conditions are friendly. Where shall one go for friendly conditions? The best place in this country, and perhaps the best in the world, is the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and California. Some localities in that immense uplift of the earth's crust are better than others. Book Austrian Health Resorts

Download or read book Austrian Health Resorts written by W. Fraser Rae and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Austrian Health Resorts: Throughout the Year Chapters XIV. and XV. in this Edition have been added in place of the Chapter in the first on "The Bitter Waters of Hungary." Thus the present Edition of this book treats exclusively of noteworthy places in the Empire of Austria, many of which are seldom visited by Englishmen or Americans, and are scarcely known to them even by repute. Yet each deserves to be visited by those who journey in quest of health or variety. An invalid requiring a course of mineral waters may go to Carlsbad, Franzensbad, Marienbad, or some other Austrian Health Resort in the spring, summer, or autumn; another, to whom the grape "cure" is prescribed, may visit Voslau or Meran in the autumn; the invalid who desires sea bathing in perfection can enjoy it for several months out of the twelve at Abbazia; while any one who is in quest of a mild and pleasant winter climate may find it at Meran, or Arco, Abbazia, or Gorizia. I may add, with confidence and perfect truth, that the geniality of the people lends an additional charm to all the Health Resorts in the Empire of Austria. Book The Sanative Influence of Climate

Download or read book The Sanative Influence of Climate written by Sir James Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sanative Influence of Climate: With an Account of the Best Places of Resort for Invalids, in England, the South of Europe, C For the present edition, this work has been almost entirely re-written, and whatever appeared not directly to the purpose has been omitted, in order to make room for the consideration of several new subjects, and the introduction of notices of some places not previously described. In an appendix, a brief account has been given of the climates of our colonies in the southern hemisphere; and, in another short appendix, a few remarks have been made on the application of some of the most efficient mineral waters of the Continent to the alleviation and cure of the principal diseases treated of in this volume. The meteorological tables have received several important additions and amendments. Since the publication of the last edition, I have continued to receive from numerous medical friends, and others, who had resided some time abroad for their health, the most satisfactory assurances of the accuracy of my descriptions of the different climates, and their influence on disease. My own additional experience has been in perfect accordance with this testimony. Madeira is almost the only place respecting which statements do not quite agree; but after carefully weighing all the information which I have received, I have not found sufficient reason to change my opinion of the climate of that island. For the valuable new matter which enriches this edition of my work, I am under obligations to various friends, to whom particular acknowledgments are made at the proper places. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climatic Treatment of Disease: Western North Carolina as a Health Resort Based upon the belief that an aseptic atmosphere is of the first importance in the selection of a climate for the benefit of sufferers from a certain class of diseases, examinations of the atmosphere have been carefully made to demonstrate its purity. Miguel and Freudenreich found that microphytes were rare at 800 metres, and absolutely wanting-at metres above the sea level. For physical reasons, high alti tudes have been believed to be beneficial in early phthisis, and, influenced by the later demonstrationsof a bacillary cause, this aseptic state of the atmos phere is theoretically accepted as promising good results, and sanitary. Stations for mountain-air treat ment of consumptives have been established at sev eral selected points in the Alps, where the comforts of home life are furnished to invalids. Of these health resorts, Davos and St. Moritz are the most popular. St. Moritz is feet and Davosis over feet above the sea level, and the latter has become noted for winter treatment, although the average temperature from November to March' is only 23° F. The number of visitors at Davos last winter was over and careful provision is made for home comfort. The patients are urged to be active out of doors within the limit of fatigue. Each year adds to the number of invalids resorting to these mountain sanitaria, and the statistics show good re sults. It should, however, be borne in mind that the cases sent to these resorts are those selected in the incipient stages of disease, and this is to be taken into the account in the deductions that the recoveries average one-fourth also the time elapsing after the treatment has been too short to determine with accuracy the results. This pertains in criticism to the statistics of other similar localities, but it is by no means an easy task to secure satisfac tory data, and such a problem can never be subjected to a matliematicala analysis. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 766 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Therapeutics of Mineral Springs and Climates This work is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the study of mineral springs; and as the introductory chapters are concerned with certain general considerations, including the classification of mineral waters, it has been possible to adopt the obviously convenient plan of describing the vast number of mineral-water resorts in alphabetical order, and those resorts that have appeared, for various reasons, to be of minor importance to English invalids have been printed, in smaller type, at the end of each alphabetical group, and described as briefly as possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida as a Health-Resort And crystal lakes. A study of most of the works on Florida, from that of Le Moyne, who visited the territory as artist to the French expedition under Laudonniere in 1564, and the Bartrams, who visited it as naturalists in 1772, to the latest publications, including periodicals, pamphlets, and' newspa pers; access to all the records bearing upon the subject in the possession of the War Department, the library of the Surgeon General, and other depositories in Washington; a careful col lation of the various meteorological and other tables included in these records; personal interviews with distinguished medi cal officers of the army, who have served in all parts of Flor ida, and with many of the scientific and medical residents of the State, with some of her representatives in Congress; and, lastly, the opportunity for consulting a considerable number of the thousands of intelligent visitors and invalids, who passed through, or located for the season at the writer's winter residence, have afforded him unusual facilities for unraveling' the intricacies of the subject so graphically described by Scoresby Jackson. The last source of information, as regards the relative merits of various climates, he considers of more value than all the others, more so than even an extended per sonal observation. For invalids are by far the best judges of climate; they are living barometers and hygrometers. Here, you have the opportunity to question and cross-question the reporters, and not only thus to arrive at the truth, but, what the books seldom give, the whole truth. All of these indi viduals were intelligent and educated people, most of them invalids who had traveled the world over in search of health, and tested its renowned sanitary resorts, some of them winter after winter. Few of them had any particular prejudice for or against any special locality, save from its actual effect, but were, from self-interest, in search of the best.
