Book The People s Team

Book excerpt: The Packers the only fan-owned team in any of North America's major pro sports leagues-- and Green Bay (population 104,057) is the smallest city with a big-time franchise. They're unlikely candidates to be pro football's preeminent team-- yet nobody in the NFL has won more championships. In honor of the team's 100th anniversary, Beech paints compelling pictures of a franchise, a town, and a fan base-- from the days of the French fur traders who settled on the shores of La Baie in the seventeenth century, to the team's pursuit of its fourteenth NFL championship. -- adapted from jacket

Book The Fortunes Of Perkin Warbeck

Download or read book The Fortunes Of Perkin Warbeck written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel, Mrs. Shelley sets out with the somewhat startling statement of her firm belief that Perkin Warbeck was in reality the lost Duke of York. She is of opinion, that it is impossible for anyone to examine the records in the Tower without arriving at the same conclusion; and sometimes even in the course of the story, we think she overlooks the resemblance of the romance in her eagerness to impress upon the reader her own peculiar view of the historical fact. The various adventures of the unfortunate Perkin, (or the young Prince, as she will have it,) from his escape out of the Tower in childhood to the termination of his career upon the scaffold, form the subject-matter of the work. The characters are skilfully portrayed, and well contrasted with each other, while the descriptions are full, clear, and powerful. Throughout, indeed, the book is written with great energy, both of thought and expression, as well as with all that feminine delicacy of feeling and perception which throws such a peculiar charm over the actions penned by an accomplished woman.

Book Battling Nelson the Durable Dane

Download or read book Battling Nelson the Durable Dane written by Mark Allen Baker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscar “Battling” Nelson (1882–1954) was perhaps the toughest professional boxer ever to enter the ring. Although a Hall of Fame inductee, Nelson remains a lesser known great of boxing lore. From the beginning of his career at 14, the Danish immigrant presented himself as a man of integrity who never smoked, drank or took a dive. In the ring and in public, Battling Nelson crafted a Renaissance man image as a lightweight champion, reporter, entertainer, real estate mogul, entrepreneur and ladies’ man. The first ever champion in his weight class to mount a comeback, he strove to break new ground (even if he wasn’t always successful). This book tells the story of a ring legend whose endurance was second to none and whose trilogy with Joe Gans is one of the great rivalries in sports history.

Book Articulating British Classicism

Download or read book Articulating British Classicism written by Elizabeth McKellar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas the past decades have seen a profound reconsideration of eighteenth-century visual culture, the architecture of that century has undergone little evaluation. Its study, unlike that of the early modern period or the twentieth century, has continued to use essentially the same methods and ideas over the last fifty years. Articulating British Classicism reconsiders the traditional historiography of British eighteenth-century architecture as it was shaped after World War II, and brings together for the first time a variety of new perspectives on British classicism in the period. Drawing on current thinking about the eighteenth century from a range of disciplines, the book examines such topics as social and gender identities, colonialization and commercialization, notions of the rural, urban and suburban, as well as issues of theory and historiography. Canonical constructions of Georgian architecture are explored, including current evaluations of the continental intellectual background, the relationship with mid seventeenth-century Stuart court classicism and the development of the subject in the twentieth century.
