Book The Algebraic Theory of Spinors and Clifford Algebras

Download or read book The Algebraic Theory of Spinors and Clifford Algebras written by Claude Chevalley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-12-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1982, Claude Chevalley expressed three specific wishes with respect to the publication of his Works. First, he stated very clearly that such a publication should include his non technical papers. His reasons for that were two-fold. One reason was his life long commitment to epistemology and to politics, which made him strongly opposed to the view otherwise currently held that mathematics involves only half of a man. As he wrote to G. C. Rota on November 29th, 1982: "An important number of papers published by me are not of a mathematical nature. Some have epistemological features which might explain their presence in an edition of collected papers of a mathematician, but quite a number of them are concerned with theoretical politics ( . . . ) they reflect an aspect of myself the omission of which would, I think, give a wrong idea of my lines of thinking". On the other hand, Chevalley thought that the Collected Works of a mathematician ought to be read not only by other mathematicians, but also by historians of science.

Book Clifford Algebras and their Applications in Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Clifford Algebras and their Applications in Mathematical Physics written by Rafał Abłamowicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first part of a two-volume set concerning the field of Clifford (geometric) algebra, this work consists of thematically organized chapters that provide a broad overview of cutting-edge topics in mathematical physics and the physical applications of Clifford algebras. algebras and their applications in physics. Algebraic geometry, cohomology, non-communicative spaces, q-deformations and the related quantum groups, and projective geometry provide the basis for algebraic topics covered. Physical applications and extensions of physical theories such as the theory of quaternionic spin, a projective theory of hadron transformation laws, and electron scattering are also presented, showing the broad applicability of Clifford geometric algebras in solving physical problems. Treatment of the structure theory of quantum Clifford algebras, the connection to logic, group representations, and computational techniques including symbolic calculations and theorem proving rounds out the presentation.

Book Those Good Gertrudes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Geraldine J. Clifford
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2014-11-02
  • ISBN : 1421414333
  • Pages : 493 pages

Download or read book Those Good Gertrudes written by Geraldine J. Clifford and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-11-02 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those Good Gertrudes explores the professional, civic, and personal roles of women teachers throughout American history. Its voice, themes, and findings build from the mostly unpublished writings of many women and their families, colleagues, and pupils. Geraldine J. Clifford studied personal history manuscripts in archives and consulted printed autobiographies, diaries, correspondence, oral histories, interviews—even film and fiction—to probe the multifaceted imagery that has surrounded teaching. This broad ranging, inclusive, and comparative work surveys a long past where schoolteaching was essentially men's work, with women relegated to restricted niches such as teaching rudiments of the vernacular language to young children and socializing girls for traditional gender roles. Clifford documents and explains the emergence of women as the prototypical schoolteachers in the United States, a process apparent in the late colonial period and continuing through the nineteenth century, when they became the majority of American public and private schoolteachers. The capstone of Clifford’s distinguished career and the definitive book on women teachers in America, Those Good Gertrudes will engage scholars in the history of education and women’s history, teachers past, present, and future, and readers with vivid memories of their own teachers. "Clifford's book is a timely blessing, the history of teachers are at last accorded their own integrity instead of as appendages in other fields of study."—San Francisco Book Review "Clifford’s colleagues around the world have long anticipated Those Good Gertrudes. They will find the wait exceedingly worthwhile. The book’s scope and depth can now incite new generations of students to reflect on and investigate the repercussions of teaching and learning—activities still driven essentially by women both in the U.S. and globally."—Donald R. Warren, Indiana University "Those ‘Good Gertrudes’—the women who dedicated some part of their lives to teaching—finally have a great historian to tell this important, missing story. Professor Geraldine J. Clifford has brought together an intense combination of extended research, fresh archival information, and the insightful interpretation that only wisdom can bring to scholarship. This stands as a landmark work in the social history of education."—John R. Thelin, author of A History of American Higher Education The first woman to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship for research in education, Geraldine J. Clifford is professor emerita at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the author of Lone Voyagers: Academic Women in Coeducational Institutions, 1870–1937.

Book Anne Clifford s Great Books of Record

Download or read book Anne Clifford s Great Books of Record written by Anne Clifford Herbert Countess of Pembroke and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Clifford, in her Great Books of Records, places herself within the dynamic 600 year history of the Clifford family. This book is unique, including a wide variety of records that provide an unbroken view into life on the Clifford estates in England, (as well as the borders of Wales,Ireland, and Scotland) for centuries, as well as the family's involvement at the centre of political life. Here we glimpse the lives of simple widows, traders, farmers, and labourers juxtaposed with the adventures of soldiers, lords and ladies, princes and princesses. We see how rebellions, crusades, and foreign wars impacted both the great and the humble. And we witness changes in the practices of justice and custom. In this book Anne Clifford asserts the centrality of women to the success of the Clifford and other noble families, including the monarchy.Anne Clifford writes herself into this history, asserting her own rights to govern the lands of her father after her decades long inheritance dispute. Anne Clifford's composition of the Great Books draws upon medieval traditions and early modern scholarship and builds upon these through theinclusion of biographies of all the Clifford lords and ladies, along with an extended biography of her mother Margaret Russell and her own autobiographical, "The Life of Mee". Those interested in the lives of medieval and early modern women, changes in culture, the effect of the political uponindividuals, and the inspiring life of Anne Clifford will find this a rich and rewarding book.
