Book Client to Auditor Employment Offers and Auditor Independence in the Post Sarbanes Oxley Era

Download or read book Client to Auditor Employment Offers and Auditor Independence in the Post Sarbanes Oxley Era written by Reginald Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety-six nonprofessional investors indicate that public accounting firms' independence is perceived to be more impaired than non-public firms when the firm audits a client who has offered a job to a member of the audit team. Although perceptions of both firms' objectivity improve as the strength of the independence safeguards increase, public company auditors are perceived as being more objective than non-public company auditors. These results bolster the argument for unified accounting standards. This study is the first to investigate nonprofessional investors' perceptions of the issue, despite their prominence in the capital markets.

Book Accounting and the Global Economy After Sarbanes Oxley

Download or read book Accounting and the Global Economy After Sarbanes Oxley written by Don E. Garner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is essential for students and practitioners in accounting, international business, finance, and economics. In a straightforward and readable style, it focuses on the changing accounting and auditing standards in national and global economies in the post-Enron/Arthur Andersen era. The authors clarify the reasons behind and consequences of the accounting profession's failure in auditing and self-regulation, as most firms placed consulting profits ahead of public audit duties. They show how Sarbanes-Oxley solutions, while not perfect, are major contributors to the profession's redemption, and have enabled it to rise to new heights of service and revenue. The book offers a detailed examination of accounting practitioners' past challenges and future prospects. It provides a realistic analysis of specific issues facing accounting and auditing firms today, including the growing problem of independence; the need for one set of international accounting standards and one set of auditing standards; adjustments facing the global financial system; and the impact of the Internet and communication systems on accounting firms.

Book Auditor Independence Revisited

Download or read book Auditor Independence Revisited written by Asokan Anandarajan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about Section 404 of the Sarbanes Oxley Act, especially the great expense that it inflicts upon SEC registrants preparing their annual reports. Less remarked on, though, is whether the restrictions that SOX imposes on the auditing profession in its relationship to its clients has significantly improved auditor independence. This question can only be answered by researchers. We seek to shed some light on this by examining what researchers learned about the impact of Sarbanes Oxley on auditor independence since SOX's passage. We also examine if researchers have studied the key ramifications of the requirements of SOX. We address the deficiencies of extant published literature and discuss what areas need to be looked at. Finally, we discuss potential alternative audit market structures developed overseas and briefly discuss their relevance here. In essence, we examine whether there is a gap between what regulators want to see addressed and what researchers have actually looked at with respect to issues concerning auditor independence in the post-Sarbanes Oxley period.

Book The Sarbanes Oxley Act Auditor Independence and Accounting Accruals

Download or read book The Sarbanes Oxley Act Auditor Independence and Accounting Accruals written by Anwer S. Ahmed and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We provide evidence on the relation between office-level client importance and abnormal accruals in a pre-SOX period and a post-SOX period. We find that in the pre-SOX period the relation is not significant for the overall sample. However, it is significantly positive for the sub-sample of firms with relatively weak governance mechanisms. More importantly, we find that for this sub-sample the positive relation between client importance and abnormal accruals remains statistically significant even in the post SOX period. Our results suggest that (i) auditor independence was not widely compromised in pre-SOX periods as presumed by the proponents of SOX, (ii) strong governance mechanisms mitigate the potentially adverse effects of client importance on auditor independence, and (iii) SOX has not been successful in mitigating the adverse effects of client importance on auditor independence for firms with weak governance.

Book Auditor Independence

Download or read book Auditor Independence written by Ismail Adelopo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Auditor Independence, Ismail Adelopo argues that the importance of auditors' independence cannot be over-emphasised. Not only do auditors provide certification of the truth and fairness of the information prepared by managers, they also have a duty to express opinions on the degree of compliance with laws and regulations guiding a firm's operations. Theirs is a socially important responsibility. In all that has been proposed to mitigate the governance crisis and restore confidence in the market system, relatively little attention has been paid to auditor independence. Examining the historical role of auditing in corporate governance and the regulatory context, this book sets the function within a theoretical framework and then provides empirical analysis of the problem issues such as the relationship between audit committees and external auditors and the probity of providing non-auditing services to audit clients. The focus on matters that are damaging to market confidence and threatening to the reputation of the auditing profession, means the conclusions and recommendations in this book are important for key stakeholders, including policy makers, regulators, those running companies, and their investors and customers. This is also a book for those responsible for training in the auditing profession and for others with a research or academic interest in the matters addressed.

Book Auditor Independence and the Quality of Information in Financial Disclosures

Download or read book Auditor Independence and the Quality of Information in Financial Disclosures written by James R. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does auditor independence increase the quality of financial disclosures, and is regulation necessary to realize such improvements? Conventional wisdom answers “yes!,” but lacks support from scholarly studies. We thus investigate whether auditor independence affects earnings quality in ways that prior research would have missed, and consider the efficiency-consequences of regulation that restricts auditors from producing non-audit services (NAS). Results from our research design offer stronger evidence that auditor independence increases earnings quality. Importantly, however, they offer little evidence that a client-firm's choice of auditor independence creates externalities, and thus speak more directly against the recent Sarbanes-Oxley restriction on NAS.
