Book Client Satisfaction in Faith Based Microfinance

Download or read book Client Satisfaction in Faith Based Microfinance written by Najmul Hoda and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main purpose of this paper is to compare the client satisfaction of faith-based and mainstream microfinance institutions. The level of satisfaction is considered on eight independent factors identified through literature survey and experts' opinion. The data-set comprised of a total of 300 microfinance clients - 150 from faith-based microfinance institutions and 150 from the mainstream microfinance institutions. The data was collected through a structured questionnaire comprising of agreement disagreement on 5-point Likert scale. Independent sample t-test was employed to determine if any significant difference exists in the satisfaction level of clients in the two models of microfinance. The results indicate that there is no significant difference among the two groups on the variables reasonability of interest rates (p=0.49), loan procedure (p=0.13), technical assistance (p = 0.822), and branch location (p = 0.36). However, there are significant differences in the two groups on the variables clients repayment policy (p=0.0001), timely availability of loan (p=0.0001), non-discrimination (p = 0.0001) and supportive staff (p = 0.005). The mean values suggest that the clients of faith-based microfinance institutions are more satisfied on these variables. The recent reports on microfinance suggest that the mainstream microfinance programs and policies that were developed for delivering the benefits of financial inclusion and poverty alleviation neglected the client perspective. The results of this study should be of significance to policy makers who are considering various alternatives to attain the goals of poverty alleviation stipulated in the Millennium Development Goals. The paper contributes to the limited empirical studies available on client satisfaction as well as the faith-based model of microfinance.

Book Faith based Microfinance An Alternative Tool of Poverty Alleviation

Download or read book Faith based Microfinance An Alternative Tool of Poverty Alleviation written by Najmul Hoda and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2013 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: A, , course: PhD, language: English, abstract: The poor, like others, too need financial products and services in order to build assets, manage consumption and mitigate risks. Microfinance, in recent times, has emerged as a powerful tool to provide access to some financial services to the poor. For decades, poverty alleviation has topped the International development agenda. United Nations Millennium Goals state that by 2015 the number of people living in extreme poverty should be half of what it was in 2000. Microfinance addresses the twin goals of financial inclusion and poverty alleviation in a way that builds self-esteem in the individual and self-sufficiency in the institution providing the financial services. Different models have emerged in microfinance delivery based on their clientele, focus area, interest rate, savings linkages, collateral, coverage and organizational/legal structure. With all the successes of the existing microfinance models, the herculean task of poverty alleviation still leaves enough space for innovative models. This study explores the potential of faith-based microfinance in complimenting the efforts of poverty alleviation and also overcoming the weaknesses in the existing models. Faith-based microfinance operate on distinct principles. The purpose of this study is to focus on the functioning of the faith based microfinance and to explore its role as an alternative tool of poverty alleviation. In order to get a meaningful insight regarding the impact of faith based microfinance on the lives of the beneficiaries, it is necessary that a comparison is made to the mainstream microfinance on commonly accepted parameters of poverty alleviation.

Book Loan Portfolio of a Faith Based Microfinance Institution

Download or read book Loan Portfolio of a Faith Based Microfinance Institution written by Najmul Hoda and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An effective tool of economic development is found in microfinance and is believed to provide sustainable mechanism for poverty alleviation. The microfinance institutions across the world operate on a few established models. The studies indicate that the microfinance institutions have been able to make a considerable impact in the areas of financial inclusion and poverty alleviation. However, the industry also needs innovative models and products to attain the targets set under the Millennium Development Goals. In addition to this, there is a need for client-centered models in order to overcome the problems of client dissatisfaction and loan defaults that have been reported in the recent past. This study focuses on the faith-based model of microfinance that differs from mainstream microfinance basically in terms of the underlying values. Faith-based organizations have a long history of participation in the areas of human development. Apart from charity-based lending, many such organizations are also functioning as microfinance institutions that are successfully delivering financial services to the poor. There is a need to study the procedures and performance of these institutions in order to ascertain their distinctive features and potential. Along with other indicators like outreach, impact, and financial sustainability, loan portfolio of a microfinance institution is also a good indicator of sustainability and throws light upon other important features. The main objective of this study is to understand the loan portfolio of faith-based microfinance institutions. A sample of 100 loan clients was purposively selected from one faith-based microfinance institution. This microfinance institution was selected from the list of faith based institutions generated after the literature review. The factors studied were the loan repayment cycles, general demographics and, the relationship between various factors involved in loan repayment. The study also tries to understand if such institutions have any discriminatory lending policies towards clients of other faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lausanne congress of 1974 marked the widespread adoption of integral mission as essential to the evangelical witness of Christ in our world. Ever since there has been ongoing debate as to the roles of evangelism and social action. In this book Oddvar Sten Ronsen argues that instead of the priority of evangelism over social action there should be the anticipation of evangelism as a result of social action. Although evangelism and social action may not occur at the same time, the author warns of the possibility of “mission drift,” where projects begin with the intention of meeting the social and spiritual needs of the people, but fail to proceed to evangelism. In succumbing to this mission drift, projects cease to be true to the principles of integral mission. Combining theological reflection with case studies of microfinance enterprises in the Philippines and Thailand, Ronsen evaluates the sustainability of, and social good delivered by, these Christian projects to the communities they serve. The research sheds light on the causes of a drift from integral mission, how these can be managed and whether microfinance can be a bridge for the gospel.

Book Dilemmas and Challenges in Islamic Finance

Download or read book Dilemmas and Challenges in Islamic Finance written by Yasushi Suzuki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenal growth of Islamic finance in the last few decades has been accompanied by a host of interesting questions and challenges. One of the critical challenges is how Islamic financial institutions can be motivated to participate in the 'equity-like' profit-and-loss sharing (PLS) contracts. It is observed that Islamic banks are reluctant to participate in the pure PLS scheme which is manifested by the rising concentration of investment on murabaha or mark-up financing. This phenomenon has been the hotbed of academic criticism on the contemporary practice of Islamic banking. This book explains the 'murabaha syndrome' in light of the incentive provided by the current institutional framework and what are the changes required in the governance structure to mend this anomaly.

Download or read book Everyday Piety written by Sarah A. Tobin and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working and living as an authentic Muslim—comporting oneself in an Islamically appropriate way—in the global economy can be very challenging. How do middle-class Muslims living in the Middle East navigate contemporary economic demands in a distinctly Islamic way? What are the impacts of these efforts on their Islamic piety? To what authority does one turn when questions arise? What happens when the answers vary and there is little or no consensus? To answer these questions, Everyday Piety examines the intersection of globalization and Islamic religious life in the city of Amman, Jordan. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic fieldwork in Amman, Sarah A. Tobin demonstrates that Muslims combine their interests in exerting a visible Islam with the opportunities and challenges of advanced capitalism in an urban setting, which ultimately results in the cultivation of a "neoliberal Islamic piety." Neoliberal piety, Tobin contends, is created by both Islamizing economic practices and economizing Islamic piety, and is done in ways that reflect a modern, cosmopolitan style and aesthetic, revealing a keen interest in displays of authenticity on the part of the actors. Tobin highlights sites at which economic life and Islamic virtue intersect: Ramadan, the hijab, Islamic economics, Islamic banking, and consumption. Each case reflects the shift from conditions and contexts of highly regulated and legalized moral behaviors to greater levels of uncertainty and indeterminacy. In its ethnographic richness, this book shows that actors make normative claims of an authentic, real Islam in economic practice and measure them against standards that derive from Islamic law, other sources of knowledge, and the pragmatics of everyday life.
