In 1870 he was appointed professor in these subjects at Leipzig. He had made two scientific journeys to Egypt, and his first work of importance, Ägypten und die Bücher Moses, appeared in 1867-1868. In 1874 he edited the celebrated medical papyrus (Papyrus Ebers) which he had discovered in Thebes (translation by H. Joachim, 1890).

The novel begins with Cleopatra and Mark Antony fleeing Alexandria after their defeat at the Battle of Actium. They take refuge in the Siwa Oasis, where they are eventually found by Octavian. Cleopatra and Antony are both captured and taken to Rome, where they are put on trial for treason. Antony is sentenced to death, and Cleopatra is allowed to choose her own fate. She chooses to commit suicide by biting into an asp. The novel ends with Octavian becoming the first Roman emperor, and Egypt becoming a province of the Roman Empire. Cleopatra Vol 3 is a historical fiction novel that tells the story of one of the most famous women in history. The novel is well-written and engaging, and it provides a unique perspective on the events that led to the fall of the Ptolemaic dynasty.

Heavily influenced by the larger-than-life adventurers he met in Colonial Africa, the great mineral wealth discovered in Africa, and the ruins of ancient lost civilizations in Africa such as Great Zimbabwe, Haggard created his Allan Quatermain adventures. Haggard also wrote about agricultural and social issues reform, in part inspired by his experiences in Africa, but also based on what he saw in Europe.

With Antony, she bore the twins Cleopatra Selene II and Alexander Helios, and son Ptolemy Philadelphus (her unions with her brothers had produced no children). Antony committed suicide after losing the Battle of Actium to Octavian's forces, and Cleopatra followed suit.
