Book The Life and Times of Cleopatra Queen of Egypt ann of the Roman Empire

Download or read book The Life and Times of Cleopatra Queen of Egypt ann of the Roman Empire written by Arthur E.P. Brome Brome Weigall and published by anboco. This book was released on 2017-06-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the following pages it will be observed that, in order not to distract the reader, I have refrained from adding large numbers of notes, references, and discussions, such as are customary in works of this kind. I am aware that by telling a straightforward story in this manner I lay myself open to the suspicions of my fellow-workers, for there is always some tendency to take not absolutely seriously a book which neither prints chapter and verse for its every statement, nor often interrupts the text with erudite arguments. In the case of the subject which is here treated, however, it has seemed to me unnecessary to encumber the pages in this manner, since the sources of my information are all so well known; and I have thus been able to present the book to the reader in a style consonant with a principle of archæological and historical study to which I have always endeavoured to adhere—namely, the avoidance of as many of those attestations of learning as may be discarded without real loss. A friend of mine, an eminent scholar, in discussing with me the scheme of this volume, earnestly exhorted me on the present occasion not to abide by this principle. Remarkingxiv that the trouble with my interpretation of history was that I attempted to make the characters live, he urged me at least to justify the manner of their resuscitation in the eyes of the doctors of science by cramming my pages with extracts from my working notes, relevant or otherwise, and by smattering my text with Latin and Greek quotations. I trust, however, that he was speaking in behalf of a very small company, for the sooner this kind of jargon of scholarship is swept into the world's dust-bin, the better will it be for public education. To my mind a knowledge of the past is so necessary to a happy mental poise that it seems absolutely essential for historical studies to be placed before the general reader in a manner sympathetic to him. "History," said Emerson, "no longer shall be a dull book.

About the Author In her experience as a Certified Financial Planning professional, Martha Adams has spent her career helping her clients plan and achieve their financial goals. Throughout this journey, she discovered a common theme that she was determined to change: the negativity around financial conversations. The discussion around money and finances has traditionally been met with confusion, uncertainty, and an overall disconnect. This is because it has always been a one-sided conversation focused on gathering information in the mind and creating a task list instead of beginning with a firm understanding of a person's feelings that have developed over time. These experiences, feelings, and beliefs are in the heart, not in the mind. A person's emotional connection with money and finances is the true starting point and one that has been overlooked or even worse, dismissed. This is where Martha's educational background in both business and education shines, as she brings her heartfelt compassion, experience, and knowledge to uplift, empower, and educate those she works with. Martha's passion for changing the conversation around money and finances has become the focus of her life's work. She believes in every- one's ability to create positive and impactful change in their lives by taking back control through their own understanding and self-development. She invests her whole heart as she tries to bring out the best in the people she works with so that they can feel empowered in their financial journey. As an author and financial educator, Martha is committed to this process, and to keeping the conversation moving forward.

Book Medusa s Gaze

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marina Belozerskaya
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-09-04
  • ISBN : 0199910820
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Medusa s Gaze written by Marina Belozerskaya and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tazza Farnese is one of the most admired objects from classical antiquity. A libation bowl carved from banded agate, it features Medusa's head on its outside and, inside, an assembly of Egyptian gods. For more than two millennia, these radiant figures have mesmerized emperors and artists, popes and thieves, merchants and museum goers. In this, the first book-length account of this renowned masterpiece, Marina Belozerskaya traces its fascinating journey through history. That it has survived at all is a miracle. The Tazza's origins date back to Ptolemaic Egypt where it likely enhanced the power and prestige of Cleopatra. After her defeat by Emperor Augustus, the bowl began an amazing itinerary along many flashpoints in world history. It likely traveled from Rome to Constantinople. After that city's sack by crusaders in 1204, it returned west to inspire the classical revival at the court of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II at Palermo. The Tazza next graced Tamerlane's court at Samarqand, before becoming an obsession of Renaissance popes and princes. It witnessed the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the turbulent aftermath of the French Revolution, and the birth of the modern Italian state. Throughout its journey, the Tazza aroused the lust of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Mongol rulers, consoled a heart-broken duchess, inspired artists including Botticelli and Raphael, tempted spies and thieves, and drew the ire of a deranged museum guard who nearly destroyed it. More than a biography of the world's most cherished bowl, Medusa's Gaze is a vivid and delightful voyage through history.

Book The Triumph and Trade of Egyptian Objects in Rome

Download or read book The Triumph and Trade of Egyptian Objects in Rome written by Stephanie Pearson and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From gleaming hardstone statues to bright frescoes, the unexpected and often spectacular Egyptian objects discovered in Roman Italy have long presented an interpretive challenge. How they shaped and were shaped by religion, politics, and identity formation has now been well researched. But one crucial function of these objects remains to be explored: their role as precious goods in a collector’s economy. The Romans imported and recreated Egyptian goods in the most opulent materials available – gold, gems, expensive wood, ivory, luxurious textiles – and displayed them like true treasures. This is due in part to the way Romans encountered these items, as argued in this book: first as dazzling spolia from the war against Cleopatra, then as costly wares exchanged over the expanding Roman trade routes. In this respect, Romans treated Egyptian art surprisingly similarly to Greek art. By examining the concrete mechanisms through which Egyptian objects were acquired and displayed in Rome, this book offers a new understanding of this impressive material at the crossroads of Hellenistic, Roman, and Egyptian culture.
