Book Atomic Habits

Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller. Over 20 million copies sold! Translated into 60+ languages! Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results No matter your goals, Atomic Habits offers a proven framework for improving--every day. James Clear, one of the world's leading experts on habit formation, reveals practical strategies that will teach you exactly how to form good habits, break bad ones, and master the tiny behaviors that lead to remarkable results. If you're having trouble changing your habits, the problem isn't you. The problem is your system. Bad habits repeat themselves again and again not because you don't want to change, but because you have the wrong system for change. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Here, you'll get a proven system that can take you to new heights. Clear is known for his ability to distill complex topics into simple behaviors that can be easily applied to daily life and work. Here, he draws on the most proven ideas from biology, psychology, and neuroscience to create an easy-to-understand guide for making good habits inevitable and bad habits impossible. Along the way, readers will be inspired and entertained with true stories from Olympic gold medalists, award-winning artists, business leaders, life-saving physicians, and star comedians who have used the science of small habits to master their craft and vault to the top of their field. Learn how to: make time for new habits (even when life gets crazy); overcome a lack of motivation and willpower; design your environment to make success easier; get back on track when you fall off course; ...and much more. Atomic Habits will reshape the way you think about progress and success, and give you the tools and strategies you need to transform your habits--whether you are a team looking to win a championship, an organization hoping to redefine an industry, or simply an individual who wishes to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, or achieve any other goal.

I wish to thank many correspondents, from all parts of the kingdom, and from America, who have taken so warm an interest in the subject on which I have sought to stir public Opinion. Language is the greatest power in the world. It cm power. English is the most powerful tongue in the world to-day. Science, art, commerce, the intellect, the soul - all bask under it. Nowhere else is there such a literature as we possess. Liberty has been born and fostered under it. By-and-by the English tongue will be the world's tongue. It is worth our while, then, to study it. To quicken its study has been my object in this book, and to raise the standard of speaking in the Senate, in the Church, at the Bar, in the School, in the Home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Common-School Reader and Speaker: Being a Selection of Pieces in Prose and Verse, With Rules for Reading and Speaking The preparation of the pieces for the purpose of applying the rules of elocution, has been regulated by a regard to the importance of placing before the reader, but one principle or rule at a time, of presenting it clearly, and of repeating it with sufficient frequency to fix it firmly on the mind. The marking by which the modifications of the Voice are indicated is accordingly, restricted, principally, to one subject in each; so as to avoid confusion, and to secure a full and lasting impression of each rule or principle. In modulation and expression, however, where there exists a natural complexity In the subject itself, the marking 13, of course. More intricate. Still, it will be found, we trust, clear and deft. Download or read book School Reading by Grades written by James Baldwin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Reading by Grades: Sixth Year The pupil who is in his sixth year at school should be able to read quite well. He should be able to pronounce at sight and without hesita tion all new or unusual words; and when reading aloud, his tones should be so clear, his enunciation so faultless, and his manner so agreeable that his hearers shall listen with pleasure and shall have a ready under standing oi whatever is being read. He is now prepared to devote more and more attention to literary criticisin - that is, to the study of the peculiarities of style which distinguish any selection, the passages which are remarkable for their beauty, their truth, or their adaptation to the particular purpose for which they were written. The habit should be cultivated of looking for and enjoying the admirable qualities of any literary production, and particularly of such productions as are generally recognized as the classics of our language. While learning to distinguish between good literature and that sort of writing which, properly speaking, is not literature at all, the pupil's acquaintance with books is enlarged and extended. He learns to know what are the best books and why they are so considered; and he acquires some knowledge of the lives of the best authors and of the circumstances under which certain of their works were produced. The present volume is designed to aid the learner in the acquisition of all these ends. The selections are of a highly interesting character, and illustrate almost every variety of English composition. To assist in their comprehension, many of the selections are introduced or followed by brief historical or bibliographical notes. Hints also are given as to col lateral, or supplementary readings on a variety of subjects. To assist the pupil still further to enlarge his acquaintance with books and authors, additional notes, literary and biographical, are given in the appendix; here also may be found several pages of brief notes explanatory of dith cult passages, unusual expressions, and historical references, such as might otherwise be stumbling stones in the way of the learner. The numerous portraits of authors is another important feature designed to add to the interest and beauty of the book, and to assist the pupil to a more intimate acquaintance with the makers of our literature. Most of the full-page pictures are reproductions of famous paintings, and these, while serving as illustrations of the text which they accompany, are designed to Introduce the learner to some of the masters of art also, and perform the more important office of cultivating and enlarging his aesthetic tastes and sympathies. Book Reading and Conversation Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reading and Conversation Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Louis Tesson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading and Conversation, Vol. 1 This new method is based on the fact that the spoken language is the most essential portion and the necessary foundation of elementary studies; writing, which should begin with the transcription of sounds, is only a rough equivalent of speech, a natural accompaniment of the study of the spoken language; and reading is dependent on a knowledge of writing. Speaking, reading and writ ing belong together, and should not be needlessly separated. With the ordinary methods, however intelligent and industrious an illiterate person may be, he can hardly study profitably by himself. He needs a teacher who can give him the pronunciation of the written words, since his book does not indicate it at all, or does so only in an imperfect way. Most words are riddles for him; he finds it hard to learn the sounds, and perhaps even more difficult to remember them. It is clear that he can learn only a few at a time, and it is natural that he should begin with the simplest ones in order to acquire harder ones by greater efforts of memory. "The perfection of art is to conceal art."--QuiNTILIAN. FUNK & WAGNALLS NEW YORK 1386 LONDON IO AND 12 DRV STREET 44 FLEET STREET All Rights Reserved. Entered, according to Act ot Congress, in the year 1886, by FUNK & WAGNALLS, In the Office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D. C, PREFACE. This is the shortest treatise on the Art of Reading that has ever been written in the English language; yet, short as it is, it is of more practical value than are all the others--which is not saying much in its praise, for all the others are of no practical value whatever. The mode of procedure herein recommended, in order to become skilled in elocution, is wholly unlike anything that has hitherto found its way into print. Yet what is here is older than the oldest of the venerable " systems " that have come down to us from former generations, for what is here dates back to the time when men began to exchange ideas by means of a spoken language. Then, as ever, the sensible man--spoke he his own language or that of another--spoke naturally, and not as the elocution of the books, and of most teachers of the art, would have us speak, for that tends to make only bow-wowers and sing-songers. New York, March, 1886. Alfred Ayres. THE ESSENTIALS OF ELOCUTION. Elocution is the art of speaking language so as to make the thought it expresses clear and impressive. This is best done by speaking the language as we should speak it if the thought were ours, and the language came to.us as we givTe it utterance. If the thought were ours, and we extemporized the language to express it, we should...
