Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1860s, the first vestiges of the resorts of Lake County appeared around the sparkling pools of the region’s many hot springs and upon the shores of Clear Lake. Lured by the supposed medicinal qualities of the water, people flocked to rustic campgrounds and cabins to “take the cure” for their ailments, drink, and bathe, staying for long periods each summer. Within a few years, ambitious entrepreneurs bottled the springs’ mineral waters and built more luxurious accommodations and amenities. Although the claims of curative waters lost sway over time, resorts equipped with extensive recreational facilities, dance floors, live music, bountiful food, hunting, fishing, and children’s entertainment continued to draw visitors in droves. Families filled the resorts in summers, and by the 1940s, large group and society meetings as well as conventions began to utilize the resorts on spring and fall weekends. Though few original resorts remain, today, in 2007, the region’s business directory lists 51 Lake County resorts.

Book The Rocks of Clear Lake California

Download or read book The Rocks of Clear Lake California written by Dana Eker and published by . This book was released on 2018-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brief description of the volcanic rocks that make touring Lake County California unique. Once Lake County was unwanted property and now has become an outdoor classroom for schools and universities. Take a tour around Clear Lake in Northern California from the comfort of your vehicle or armchair to follow the landscape as it migrated from the ocean floor, collided with the San Andreas Fault and the Mendocino Triple Junction. Learn about the formation of Mt. Konocti, land formations, fault lines, ancient lakebeds, lake sediments. and more explained with maps, charts, and photos. Lake County emerged out of the ocean as young, unstable graywacke clays during 80-160 million years ago. The force of subduction, the Pacific Ocean Plate under the North American Plate, created thrust faulting scraping the deep-sea sediments onto the shore, causing the continent to overlap, and lift to create terraces. This marine collection became the groundwork of the Lake County Franciscan Mélange or Complex making up 80% of Lake and Mendocino Counties, as seen in the entire California coastal mountains and ranges. This mélange is approximately 70 miles from the coast to the mountains west of the Sacramento Valley. Three north-south trending belts have been designated; Coastal, Central (from the Ukiah Valley to Clear Lake, west side) and Eastern (north/east side of Clear Lake to Wilbur Springs), which gives you an idea of what was, what is and what will be as subduction on the coast ceases.

Download or read book Assembling California written by John McPhee and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At various times in a span of fifteen years, John McPhee made geological field surveys in the company of Eldridge Moores, a tectonicist at the University of California at Davis. The result of these trips is Assembling California, a cross-section in human and geologic time, from Donner Pass in the Sierra Nevada through the golden foothills of the Mother Lode and across the Great Central Valley to the wine country of the Coast Ranges, the rock of San Francisco, and the San Andreas family of faults. The two disparate time scales occasionally intersect—in the gold disruptions of the nineteenth century no less than in the earthquakes of the twentieth—and always with relevance to a newly understood geologic history in which half a dozen large and separate pieces of country are seen to have drifted in from far and near to coalesce as California. McPhee and Moores also journeyed to remote mountains of Arizona and to Cyprus and northern Greece, where rock of the deep-ocean floor has been transported into continental settings, as it has in California. Global in scope and a delight to read, Assembling California is a sweeping narrative of maps in motion, of evolving and dissolving lands.

Download or read book Volcanic Wines written by John Szabo and published by Jacqui Small. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner in Drink category - André Simon Food and Drink Book Awards 2016 Volcanic Wines takes a novel approach to the world of wine, using volcanic soil as the overarching theme and link between a wide range of grapes and wine regions. Wine professionals are already deeply attuned to the impact of terroir and soil type on wine characteristics and quality. While consumers tend to rely on grape variety as their main purchasing cue, as the market broadens and general knowledge of wine expands, terroir now figures more prominently in their thinking. It's more widely acknowledged and understood today that even small variations in soil type can result in dramatically different wines, and that the same soil type can yield a distinctive imprint regardless of grape variety or production region. John Szabo introduces geology, volcanism and the correlation between soil type and wine composition, with the right balance of science, personal history and commercial considerations. A wide and breathtaking range of photographs highlight how stunning volcanic wine regions are; together with maps and wine labels, the reader is taken on a visual tour of these remote corners of the globe. Volcanic Wines is a well-researched resource on the history, unique characteristics, wine styles and most celebrated producers in each volcanic region. Personal and anecdotal information helps to humanize the journey, with experiences and discoveries shared in eloquent but accessible, playful prose.
