This complete summary of the ideas from Ron Pernick and Clint Wilder's book "The Clean Tech Revolution" shows that the concept of "clean tech" is not only the environmentally friendly option, it is the business-friendly option too, as government regulation and public opinion swings in its favour. Additionally, using fewer natural resources can mean increasing returns for investors. In their book, the authors explore the rationale behind Clean Tech and the eight key sectors. They explain that each sector still has its challenges but also analyse where the profit opportunities are for the companies with the knowledge and expertise to exploit those opportunities. Book Greenovation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joan Fitzgerald
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-02-27
  • ISBN : 0190695528
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book Greenovation written by Joan Fitzgerald and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collectively, cities take up a relatively tiny amount of land on the earth, yet emit 72 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Clearly, cities need to be at the center of any broad effort to reduce climate change. In Greenovation, the eminent urban policy scholar Joan Fitzgerald argues that too many cities are only implementing random acts of greenness that will do little to address the climate crisis. She instead calls for "greenovation"--using the city as a test bed for adopting and perfecting green technologies for more energy--efficient buildings, transportation, and infrastructure more broadly. Further, Fitzgerald contends that while many city mayors cite income inequality as a pressing problem, few cities are connecting climate action and social justice-another aspect of greenovation. Focusing on the biggest producers of greenhouse gases in cities, buildings, energy and transportation, Fitzgerald examines how greenovating cities are reducing emissions overall and lays out an agenda for fostering and implementing urban innovations that can help reverse the path toward irrevocable climate damage. Drawing on interviews with practitioners in more than 20 North American and European cities, she identifies the strategies and policies they are employing and how support from state, provincial and national governments has supported or thwarted their efforts. A uniquely urban-focused appraisal of the economic, political, and social debates that underpin the drive to "go green," Greenovation helps us understand what is arguably the toughest policy problem of our era: the increasing impact of anthropocentric climate change on modern social life.

Book Clean Technology and the Environment

Download or read book Clean Technology and the Environment written by R. Kirkwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many environmental problems resulting from atmospheric, land and water pollution are now widely understood. The combination of both improved technology and legislative pressure has led to a reduction in pollution from industrial practices in the West in recent years. However, sustainable development is dependent upon a new approach to environmental protection - clean technology. This book is in two parts. The first explores the ecological principles governing the function of ecosystems, sustain ability and biodiversity (Chapter 1) and the problems resulting from atmospheric pollution (Chapter 2), water pollution (Chapter 3) and land pollution (Chapter 4). For example, there is increasing international concern that the combustion of fossil fuels is leading to an increase in the levels of carbon, sulphur and nitrogen gases which pollute the atmosphere of our planet. The enhanced levels of carbon gases such as carbon dioxide may cause change in our global climate and, in tum, lead to flooding and loss of low-lying coastal regions. In addition, the deposition of sulphur and nitrogen oxides is believed to be the cause of 'acid rain' which has led to loss of fish stocks from upland lochs and damage to forestry plantations.

Book The Power of Unreasonable People

Download or read book The Power of Unreasonable People written by John Elkington and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The playwright George Bernard Shaw once said "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." Highly unconventional capitalists and entrepreneurs who are solving some of the world's great economic, social, and environmental problems are, in the process, disrupting existing industries, value chains, and business models, and replacing them with fast-growing markets in all corners of the world. The Power of Unreasonable People argues that leaders and decision-makers can gain insight into the future of market opportunity from the mindset and strategies of this new type of entrepreneur. The book offers an on-the-ground look at social entrepreneurs by identifying a new breed of "unreasonable" entrepreneurs, explaining how their enterprises have been built, exploring the impact of their work on future market risks and opportunities, and finally highlighting lessons for tomorrow's leaders. Incumbents who recognize the value of investing in, partnering with, and learning from these entrepreneurial operations will be better positioned to adapt to the disruption and adopt new business practices. John Elkington is the Founder, Chief Entrepreneur, and Non-Executive Director of the international consultancy SustainAbility. Pamela Hartigan is Managing Director for the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship.

Book The Clean Tech Revolution

Download or read book The Clean Tech Revolution written by Ron Pernick and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When industry giants such as GE, Toyota, and Sharp and investment firms such as Goldman Sachs are making multibillion-dollar investments in clean technology, the message is clear. Developing clean technologies is no longer a social issue championed by environmentalists; it's a moneymaking enterprise moving solidly into the business mainstream. In fact, as the economy faces unprecedented challenges from high energy prices, resource shortages, and global environmental and security threats, clean tech—technologies designed to provide superior performance at a lower cost while creating significantly less waste than conventional offerings—promises to be the next engine of economic growth. In The Clean Tech Revolution, authors Ron Pernick and Clint Wilder identify the major forces that have pushed clean tech from back-to-the-earth utopian dream to its current revolution among the inner circles of corporate boardrooms, on Wall Street trading floors, and in government offices around the globe. By highlighting eight major clean-tech sectors—solar energy, wind power, biofuels and biomaterials, green buildings, personal transportation, the smart grid, mobile applications, and water filtration—they uncover how investors, entrepreneurs, and individuals can profit from this next wave of technological innovation. Pernick and Wilder shine the spotlight on the winners among technologies, companies, and regions that are likely to reap the greatest benefits from clean tech—and they show you why the time to act is now. Groundbreaking and authoritative, The Clean Tech Revolution is the must-read book to understand and profit from the clean technologies that are reshaping our fast-changing world.

Book Law and the Transition to Business Sustainability

Download or read book Law and the Transition to Business Sustainability written by Daniel R. Cahoy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book expands on law-related research by examining the legal aspects of sustainability with a focus on the impact on business strategies. It recognizes that firms must adopt an integrated approach to law and sustainability, considering multiple disciplines and goals, and serve as a forum for bringing together scholarship from fields such as environmental law, energy, government regulation and intellectual property. Firms increasingly have an interest in transitioning to sustainable business practices that take into consideration the fact that global resources are finite and will be increasingly scarce. They acknowledge that current actions have social, economic and environmental consequences and employ options to ensure that future generations have the same options and benefits. Examples of sustainable practices increasingly employed by firms include the institutionalization of “whole life-cycle” analysis in marketing and product design, utilization of sustainable inputs and energy sources, tracking and reporting sustainability performance, attempting the valuation of future generation prosperity and happiness as a discounting mechanism, and integrating sustainability into firm culture and management goals. It is clear that law and regulation have an extremely important role to play in the transition to more sustainable business practices. Broadly stated, law can provide structure for firms responding to forces that pull transition by enabling sustainability leadership and competitive advantage through funding models, intellectual property rights and collaboration means. Additionally, law can work to push transition by compelling firms to act through regulatory structures, accounting and governance mechanisms.
