Book excerpt: Longlisted for the Prix Sade 2021 Longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize Longlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize A New York Times Notable Book of 2020 A New York Times Critics Top Ten Book of the Year Named a Best Book of the Year by over 30 Publications, including The New Yorker, TIME, The Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, NPR, and the BBC In the highly anticipated follow-up to his beloved debut, What Belongs to You, Garth Greenwell deepens his exploration of foreignness, obligation, and desire Sofia, Bulgaria, a landlocked city in southern Europe, stirs with hope and impending upheaval. Soviet buildings crumble, wind scatters sand from the far south, and political protesters flood the streets with song. In this atmosphere of disquiet, an American teacher navigates a life transformed by the discovery and loss of love. As he prepares to leave the place he’s come to call home, he grapples with the intimate encounters that have marked his years abroad, each bearing uncanny reminders of his past. A queer student’s confession recalls his own first love, a stranger’s seduction devolves into paternal sadism, and a romance with another foreigner opens, and heals, old wounds. Each echo reveals startling insights about what it means to seek connection: with those we love, with the places we inhabit, and with our own fugitive selves. Cleanness revisits and expands the world of Garth Greenwell’s beloved debut, What Belongs to You, declared “an instant classic” by The New York Times Book Review. In exacting, elegant prose, he transcribes the strange dialects of desire, cementing his stature as one of our most vital living writers.

Book excerpt: Americans in the early 19th century were, as one foreign traveller bluntly put it, "filthy, bordering on the beastly"--perfectly at home in dirty, bug-infested, malodorous surroundings. Many a home swarmed with flies, barnyard animals, dust, and dirt; clothes were seldom washed; men hardly ever shaved or bathed. Yet gradually all this changed, and today, Americans are known worldwide for their obsession with cleanliness--for their sophisticated plumbing, daily bathing, shiny hair and teeth, and spotless clothes. In Chasing Dirt, Suellen Hoy provides a colorful history of this remarkable transformation from "dreadfully dirty" to "cleaner than clean," ranging from the pre-Civil War era to the 1950s, when American's obsession with cleanliness reached its peak. Hoy offers here a fascinating narrative, filled with vivid portraits of the men and especially the women who helped America come clean. She examines the work of early promoters of cleanliness, such as Catharine Beecher and Sylvester Graham; and describes how the Civil War marked a turning point in our attitudes toward cleanliness, discussing the work of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, headed by Frederick Law Olmsted, and revealing how the efforts of Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War inspired American women--such as Dorothea Dix, Clara Barton, and Louisa May Alcott--to volunteer as nurses during the war. We also read of the postwar efforts of George E. Waring, Jr., a sanitary engineer who constructed sewer systems around the nation and who, as head of New York City's street-cleaning department, transformed the city from the nation's dirtiest to the nation's cleanest in three years. Hoy details the efforts to convince African-Americans and immigrants of the importance of cleanliness, examining the efforts of Booker T. Washington (who preached the "gospel of the toothbrush"), Jane Addams at Hull House, and Lillian Wald at the Henry Street Settlement House. Indeed, we see how cleanliness gradually shifted from a way to prevent disease to a way to assimilate, to become American. And as the book enters the modern era, we learn how advertising for soaps, mouth washes, toothpastes, and deodorants in mass-circulation magazines showed working men and women how to cleanse themselves and become part of the increasingly sweatless, odorless, and successful middle class. Shower for success! By illuminating the historical roots of America's shift from "dreadfully dirty" to "squeaky clean," Chasing Dirt adds a new dimension to our understanding of our national culture. And along the way, it provides colorful and often amusing social history as well as insight into what makes Americans the way we are today.

Book Foul Bodies

Download or read book Foul Bodies written by Kathleen M. Brown and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In colonial times few Americans bathed regularly; by the mid-1800s, a cleanliness “revolution” had begun. Why this change, and what did it signify? A nation’s standards of private cleanliness reveal much about its ideals of civilization, fears of disease, and expectations for public life, says Kathleen Brown in this unusual cultural history. Starting with the shake-up of European practices that coincided with Atlantic expansion, she traces attitudes toward “dirt” through the mid-nineteenth century, demonstrating that cleanliness—and the lack of it—had moral, religious, and often sexual implications. Brown contends that care of the body is not simply a private matter but an expression of cultural ideals that reflect the fundamental values of a society. The book explores early America’s evolving perceptions of cleanliness, along the way analyzing the connections between changing public expectations for appearance and manners, and the backstage work of grooming, laundering, and housecleaning performed by women. Brown provides an intimate view of cleanliness practices and how such forces as urbanization, immigration, market conditions, and concerns about social mobility influenced them. Broad in historical scope and imaginative in its insights, this book expands the topic of cleanliness to encompass much larger issues, including religion, health, gender, class, and race relations.

Book The Culture of Cleanliness in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book The Culture of Cleanliness in Renaissance Italy written by Douglas Biow and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerned about sanitation during a severe bout of plague in Milan, Leonardo da Vinci designed an ideal, clean city. Leonardo was far from alone among his contemporaries in thinking about personal and public hygiene, as Douglas Biow shows in The Culture of Cleanliness in Renaissance Italy. A concern for cleanliness, he argues, was everywhere in the Renaissance.Anxieties about cleanliness were expressed in literature from humanist panegyrics to bawdy carnival songs, as well as in the visual arts. Biow surveys them all to explain why the topic so permeated Renaissance culture. At one level, cleanliness, he documents, was a matter of real concern in the Renaissance. At another, he finds, issues such as human dignity, self-respect, self-discipline, social distinction, and originality were rethought as a matter of artistic concern. The Culture of Cleanliness in Renaissance Italy moves from the clean to the unclean, from the lofty to the base. Biow first examines the socially elevated, who defined and distinguished themselves as clean, pure, and polite. He then turns to soap, an increasingly common commodity in this period, and the figure of the washerwoman. Finally he focuses on latrines, which were universally scorned yet functioned artistically as figures of baseness, creativity, and fun in the works of Dante and Boccaccio. Paralleling this social stratification is a hierarchy of literary and visual artifacts, from the discourse of high humanism to filthy curses and scatological songs. Deftly bringing together high and low-as well as literary and visual-cultures, this book provides a fresh perspective on the Italian Renaissance and its artistic legacy.

Book excerpt: Recent years have shown an increase in interest in the study of cleanliness from a historical and sociological perspective. Many of such studies on bathing and washing, on keeping the body and the streets clean, and on filth and the combat of dirt, focus on Europe. In Cleanliness and Culture attention shifts to the tropics, to Indonesia, in colonial times as well as in the present. Subjects range from the use of soap and the washing of clothes as a pretext to claim superiority of race and class to how references to being clean played a role in a campaign against European homosexuals in the Netherlands Indies at the end of the 1930s. Other topics are eerie skin diseases and the sanitary measures to eliminate them, and how misconceptions about lack of hygiene as the cause of illness hampered the finding of a cure. Attention is also drawn to differences in attitude towards performing personal body functions outdoors and retreating to the privacy of the bathroom, to traditional bathing ritual and to the modern tropical Spa culture as a manifestation of a New Asian lifestyle. With contributions by Bart Barendregt, Marieke Bloembergen, Kees van Dijk, Mary Somers Heidhues, David Henley, George Quinn, and Jean Gelman Taylor.

Book From Cleanliness To Prosperity

Download or read book From Cleanliness To Prosperity written by Rajiv Tidke and published by Rajiv Tidke. This book was released on 2021-06-05 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teachers are the real mentors of students who are strong pillars of the futurist nation. Students of primary and high school are as if the rolls of mud and teachers are perfect potters to shape these mud rolls. The task to enamel of gold to these students-mud rolls to change into civilized, well-educated is being done continually by teachers. Because students follow all the guidance of not only parents but also teachers with the same delicacy. That's why students also learn along with the regular curriculum - How to behave in the society and serve the nation as well as parents when they take responsibilities of their family, such guidance is offered to them by their respective teachers. We also owe to the nation where we have our food and water. With this feeling , inspired Headmaster of Z.P. school of Hataipura, Kandhar, Mr. Rajiv Tidke has been seen to take social responsibilities through his cleanliness campaigns all the time. Popular among students, Rajiv Tidke got the new stimulation of cleaning the surroundings of school when he was in the Z. P. school Kamari, Taluka Hadgaon, District Nanded. Teachers and students were always harassed because of the dirtiness spread in the surrounding area of the school for many years and students always faced illness. One day as usual, peons and students gathered in front of the school. The peon was not ready to open the lock. Rajiv Tidke saw that someone had applied human feces on the lock. After the instructions given to the peon, the lock was washed clean and the school opened. After this the prayer was recited but this incident made Rajiv Tidke restless. He saw litters of notebooks spread in the surrounding area of the school. Trained under the guidance of Scout, Rajiv Tidke lifted human feces in the school campus and threw it away out of the school. After seeing the task of the cleanliness of their teacher, students themselves lifted feces and threw out of the campus of school. During a short time, the campus was cleaned. This act remained the first cleanliness campaign of Rajiv Tidke. Absorbing this motivation in his soul, he cleaned the entire school and the campus of school with the help of the students and teachers by giving some time for this activity every day. Then with the curriculum activities during the WorkExperience periods Rajiv Tidke cleaned lanes of various areas, gutters, roads, junk areas of Kamari village with the co-operation of the sarpanch, citizens, colleagues, teachers and students. And with this real work, villagers along his students were imbibed the importance of cleanliness. In this way, at each place where he got transferred, on holidays as well as during Work Experience periods, Rajiv Tidke practically organised cleanliness campaigns to convince the importance of cleanliness, joining hands with the sarpanch, citizens, colleagues and students. Especially the campaigns at Loha, Malegaon and Malkapur are noteworthy. At present, Rajiv Tidke is the Headmaster of Z. P. school of Hataipura, Kandhar, Taluka Kandhar, the campus and the surrounding area of this school has been also cleaned with the co-operation of colleague teachers and students. The school is also digitalized recently without the government help, he raised money from the public fund and he also added his own amount to digitalize the school. The school walls are turned totally interactive to increase the interest of students in learning. Each student should easily recite to learn all formulae, words, proverbs, good thoughts, and quotes. For this achievement, the school is transferred beautifully to shape the nation's future pillars i.e. students. He has tried to reach the massage towards citizens, ‘Plant trees, save trees’ by arranging the tree plantation program practically in the surrounding area of the school. He is also conserving and protecting these trees all the time. The entire experiences of his work, Rajiv Tidke has described in his mother tongue through his book, (Swacchtetun Samrudhikade - स्वच्छतेतून समृद्धीकडे ),FROM CLEANLINESS TO PROSPERITY, without any hesitation. This is the readable book which is the best guidelines to convince you the importance of cleanliness of your surrounding. Each teacher must read this book with the special purpose to transform society. After noticing the experiences of Cleanliness Campaigns of Rajiv Tidke through this book, if each teacher conducts the cleanliness campaigns for villages with the co-operation of the sarpanch, citizens, colleagues, and students, our India will definitely approach PROSPERITY through CLEANLINESS by taking inspiration from this book.

Book excerpt: Why do we still have nits? What exactly are 'purity rules'? And why have baths scarcely changed in 200 years? The long history of personal hygiene and purity is a fascinating subject that reveals how closely we are linked to our deeper past. In this pioneering book, Virginia Smith covers the global history of human body-care from the Neolithic to the present, using first-hand accounts and sources. From pre-historic grooming rituals to New Age medicine, from ascetics to cosmetics, Smith looks at how different cultures have interpreted and striven for personal cleanliness and shows how, throughout history, this striving for purity has brought great social benefits as well as great tragedies. It is probably safe to say that no-one who reads this book will look at his or her body (or bathroom) in quite the same way again.
