Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In communities all around the world, water supplies are coming under increasing pressure as population growth, climate change, pollution, and changes in land use affect water quantity and quality. To address existing and anticipated water shortages, many communities are working to increase water conservation and are seeking alternative sources of water. Water reuse- the sue of treated wastewater, or "reclaimed" water, for beneficial purposes such as drinking, irrigation, or industrial uses- is one option that has helped some communities significantly expand their water supplies. Understanding Water Reuse summarizes the main findings of the National Research Council report Water Reuse: Expanding the Nation's Water Supply Through Reuse of Municipal Wastewater. The report provides an overview of the options and outlook for water reuse in the United States, discusses water treatment technologies and potential uses of reclaimed water, and presents a new analysis that compares the risks of drinking reclaimed water to those of drinking water from traditional sources.

Book Ground Water Recharge Using Waters of Impaired Quality

Download or read book Ground Water Recharge Using Waters of Impaired Quality written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As demand for water increases, water managers and planners will need to look widely for ways to improve water management and augment water supplies. This book concludes that artificial recharge can be one option in an integrated strategy to optimize total water resource management and that in some cases impaired-quality water can be used effectively as a source for artificial recharge of ground water aquifers. Source water quality characteristics, pretreatment and recharge technologies, transformations during transport through the soil and aquifer, public health issues, economic feasibility, and legal and institutional considerations are addressed. The book evaluates three main types of impaired quality water sourcesâ€"treated municipal wastewater, stormwater runoff, and irrigation return flowâ€"and describes which is the most consistent in terms of quality and quantity. Also included are descriptions of seven recharge projects.

Book Water Reuse

  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2012-07-17
  • ISBN : 0309224624
  • Pages : 276 pages

Download or read book Water Reuse written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding water reuse-the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation-could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources. Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the issues that have been encountered at other sites, and the steps that have led to successful resolution of these issues, can provide great help to those considering, planning, or implementing new groundwater recharge projects. Recent technical advances and operational experience have demonstrated that well recharge is a feasible and cost effective method of artificially recharging natural aquifers. This practical guide reviews the technical constraints and issues that have been addressed and resolved through research and experience at many sites. The book presents aquifer storage recovery (ASR) technology and traces its evolution over the past 25 years in the United States. Procedures for groundwater recharge are presented, and selected case studies are examined. Drinking water quality standards and conversion factors are provided in the appendix for easy reference.

Download or read book Protecting Our Groundwater written by Michael Gagan and published by . This book was released on 2021-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, groundwater was the main source of water supply for the 2.5 million people who lived in southern Los Angeles County at the time. That supply was in peril. Groundwater elevations in the Central and West Coast Basins were dropping precipitously. Massive quantities of seawater were contaminating aquifers. Groundwater pumping was unregulated and the basins were unmanaged. The Water Replenishment District was created in 1959 to restore and protect the groundwater resources of the basins. Today, the basins provide half the water supply for 4 million people in all or parts of 43 cities. Groundwater elevations are at healthy levels, who can pump how much water is fixed, seawater is held at bay, and the basins are sustainably managed and replenished with local supply. Protecting Our Groundwater tells the story of how that came to be.

Book Drought Proofing and Water Resource Management

Download or read book Drought Proofing and Water Resource Management written by T.S. Chouhan and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents best management practices that maximize efficiency, reliability, and economy which minimizing the potential for adverse effects to the environment and human health. The chapters discuss how conjunctive water use can increase water availability in the developing world and what types of conjunctive use schemes are the most promising. The book examines the feasibility of a drought watch alert system and the legal and administrative framework required. It also explores the application of the Optimization Models and the Decision Support Systems to the study of different water management alternatives under drought conditions. Drought Proofing and Water Resources Management delineates how to reduce drought effects through pro-active vision, good management, and conjunctiv use of water sources. Drought is a recurring feature in aird and semi arid regions of India. Every effort is made to combat it since Independence. Still drought stays here as unwanted guest. Thousands of million Rupees are spent on drought and Flood control. This is now high time to rethink and review our policies and planning. There is need for permanent drought proofing in the state rather than short-term measures during incidence of drought disaster only. Efforts have been made in this book to critical review the scenario for drought proofing of the state through Water Resource Management.
