Book excerpt: Minerals in Holocene and late Pleistocene basin sediments of the northern California Continental Borderland are derived from local sources, and in minor amounts from wind- and current-borne sediment. Source, sea level fluctuations, differential settling, and sedimentation by floods control the distribution of the mineralogy. River-sediment mineralogy can be divided into northern sedimentary, central igneous-metamorphic, and southern batholithic suites. Analysis of cores reveal mineralogic variations that are largely contolled by sea-level fluctuations. Numerous well-sorted gray silt layers in Santa Barbara Basin appear to be flood-deposits that formed after unusually heavy storms, such as occurred in 1969. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation is intended to be a contribution to the study of Recent marine sediments. The review of previous work will indicate that little is known about such deposits. A study of Recent marine sediments was therefore considered to be of great interest because many questions pertinent to sedimentation, diagenesis and oil formation can only be answered, if more is known about Recent deposits. Since most studies have been restricted to shelf areas and all other studies of marine deposits have been from widely separated localities, the Gulf of Mexico has been chosen as a promising area for study. The cores used in this study were made available by the Lamont Geological Observatory, which has a tremendous collection of cores. Since most Recent marine sediments consist of fine grained clay material and since the clay minerals, among all crystalline phases, would be the first ones to show any chemical reactions with their new environment (diagenetic changes), an investigation of the clay fraction was thought to be very interesting. This would include a study of the clay mineral composition of various size fractions, which might give a clue about the origin of some components due to their occurrence in definite size fractions. It was thought that diagenetic changes would be detected most easily if a long, single core was carefully sampled and studied. Also any sudden changes in the mineralogical composition would indicate a difference in source area, which would be of paleogeographic interest. In addition it was preferred to study surface samples which might reveal the reaction of clay minerals to the present environments or outline various regions influenced by several rivers, each having a different source area.
