Book Daybook

Download or read book Daybook written by Anne Truitt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A beautiful new edition of the cult classic that counts Zadie Smith and Rachel Kushner among its fans – with a new introduction by Celia Paul. ‘I am an artist. Even to write it makes me feel deeply uneasy.’ Renowned American artist Anne Truitt kept this illuminating and inspiring journal between 1974-8, determined to come to terms with the forces that shaped her art and life. She recalls her childhood on the eastern shore of Maryland, her career change from psychology to art, and her path to a sculptural practice that would ‘set colour free in three dimensions’. She reflects on the generous advice of other artists, watches her own daughters’ journey into motherhood, meditates on criticism and solitude, and struggles to find the way to express her vision. Resonant and true, encouraging and revelatory, Anne Truitt guides herself – and her readers – through a life in which domestic activities and the needs of children and friends are constantly juxtaposed against the world of colour and abstract geometry to which she is drawn in her art. Beautifully written and a rare window on the workings of a creative mind, Daybook showcases an extraordinary artist whose insights generously and succinctly illuminate the artistic process. 'Truitt wrote as she sculpted, returning to the past again and again to find fresh truths.' The New Yorker ‘This miracle of a book will inspire artists for generations to come.’ Celia Paul

Book The Life and Works of Claude Hirst 1855 1942

Download or read book The Life and Works of Claude Hirst 1855 1942 written by Christine Crafts Neal and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a New York Times article of 1922, Claudine Raguet Hirst was described as "the female Harnett," a reference to successful still-life painter William Michael Harnett (1848-1892). This was high praise for a woman artist to have received at that time. Yet, like many women artists, Hirst has been omitted from the art historical canon. This dissertation, the first scholarly examination of Hirst, establishes a chronology of Hirst's life, and brings together the body of her work so that it may be examined in its entirety. To do so, this dissertation examines the circumstances of women artists of Hirst's time, as well as the art world of New York during the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. In addition, this dissertation proposes answers to the question, why did Hirst, and other women artists, paint still-life compositions? In addition to chronicling her personal and professional lives, this dissertation examines the body of her artistic work. Accurately titling and dating extant paintings was one of this researcher's primary tasks, in addition to identifying 117 total works. By dividing her oeuvre into three periods that reflect stylistic and thematic changes and developments, her growth as an artist is evident, and her oeuvre becomes comprehensible. Understanding Hirst's oeuvre highlighted her contributions to the still-life genre. She executed her compositions in the "masculine" trompe l'oeil manner, but frequently used the "feminine" medium of watercolor to do so. She worked in the gender-appropriate category of still-life painting, but rather than floral paintings, she rendered "bachelor" and library table compositions. Finally, she opened the painted books and presented to the viewer, thus adding a narrative layer to a genre usually appreciated for its formal qualities.

Book American Watercolor in the Age of Homer and Sargent

Download or read book American Watercolor in the Age of Homer and Sargent written by Kathleen A. Foster and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of the transformation of American watercolor practice between 1866 and 1925 The formation of the American Watercolor Society in 1866 by a small, dedicated group of painters transformed the perception of what had long been considered a marginal medium. Artists of all ages, styles, and backgrounds took up watercolor in the 1870s, inspiring younger generations of impressionists and modernists. By the 1920s many would claim it as "the American medium." This engaging and comprehensive book tells the definitive story of the metamorphosis of American watercolor practice between 1866 and 1925, identifying the artist constituencies and social forces that drove the new popularity of the medium. The major artists of the movement - Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, William Trost Richards, Thomas Moran, Thomas Eakins, Charles Prendergast, Childe Hassam, Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, and many others - are represented with lavish color illustrations. The result is a fresh and beautiful look at watercolor's central place in American art and culture.
