In addition to summarizing this approach to learning, the book examines the construction of a classroom culture with Chinese characteristics and argues that the collective-individualism-based model accurately portrays the personal learning style of students in a specific classroom culture that includes particular symbolic objects.

Book excerpt: School culture is playing an increasingly important role in school performance and educational development. Within the national campaign in China for the innovative and sustainable development of education, local governments in Beijing Municipality have encouraged and facilitated educational innovation toward better school culture. In recent years various initiatives have been undertaken by a select group of schools to develop strategies and further action toward innovation and change. This book documents an investigation of how teachers and principals perceive school culture development in China. A survey was conducted among 1,992 informants from 37 schools (located in four different districts) in Beijing Municipality. The results of this study indicated that the respondents had overall positive perceptions of school culture construction and development in the educational change process. In general, they showed a positive attitude toward the school culture improvement initiatives, reported satisfaction about their current school culture and held confidence in the direction their school culture is heading. The study demonstrated that certain factors, such as school geographical location and respondents’ job duty, job title, and gender, make a difference in how participants perceive their school’s culture. Teachers and principals from a less economically developed district had less awareness of, involvement in, and understanding of school culture development in all its aspects. A notable gap between teachers and principals was identified in their perception of the core values and norms of the school and of communication between teachers and principals. This study suggests that for educational development to be further carried forward successfully, there is an urgent need for better distribution of educational resources (both financial and leadership), common understanding, agreed-upon goals, and efficient communication between principals and teachers. Book excerpt: Given the increasing global interest in Chinese culture, this book uses case studies to describe and interpret Chinese cultivation in contemporary Taiwanese schools. Cultivation is a concept unique to Chinese culture and is characterized by different attitudes towards teaching and learning compared to Western models of education. The book starts with a discussion of human nature in Chinese schools of philosophy and levels of goodness. Following the philosophical background is a presentation of how cultivation is practiced in Chinese culture from prenatal through high school education. The case studies focus both on how students are cultivated as they become members of Chinese society, and on what role teachers play in cultivating the children in school. In addition, supports from Chinese educational institutions, including public schools, families, and organizations such as private cram schools, are introduced and explained. In closing, the book presents a critique of the modern school reform movement and the conflicts between the reform proposals and traditional practices. Based on the collective work of Taiwanese researchers in the fields of education, history and anthropology, the book identifies the purpose of education as cultivating virtue in a process of creating an ideal person who serves society, and describes the way teachers have carried on this tradition despite its faltering status in contemporary educational discourse and in the face of reform movements.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Viewing the goal of language teaching as preparing learners to communicate successfully in the languages and cultures being studied, this thesis adopts the Performed Culture Approach, which expands the meaning of "culture" and integrates the acquisition of behavioral culture with the learning of the target language. This study addresses in-school behavioral culture as one of the primary and fundamental microcultures in language teaching. The assumption is that since schooling is considered a process of socialization and enculturation, the behavior patterns and social norms in teacher-student and student-student interactions have implications for language teaching and learning. With this assumption, this study conducted a questionnaire survey among college students and teachers in American and Chinese cultures. The purpose of the survey is to explore how students of the two cultures behave in the perceived course of transactions with their teachers and classmates, and what the expectation of the teachers in the two cultures are with respect to how students in the teachers' culture are expected to behave in these transactions. Five transactions were examined in the survey: greeting one's teacher, expressing different opinions from one's teacher, dealing with a problem in a study group, responding to compliments from other classmates, and returning a favor to a classmate. Comparisons between the results of the American student respondents and those of the Chinese student respondents indicate differences in terms of the perception the student respondents of the two cultures have as to how they would do things in these transactions. The results of the teacher survey reveal that the ways that the students from the two cultures would be most likely to behave were recognized and accepted by members of their own culture. In addition, the results of the survey virtually confirm the researcher's preliminary observations. This indicates that the perceived course of these transactions and the actual transactions between the teacher and the students are largely parallel. The findings of this study indicate it would be beneficial to introduce the behavior patterns of Chinese students (which can be widely applied to other interactions in various contexts in Chinese culture) into the Chinese language classroom. Furthermore, for American learners of Chinese language, to behave in ways that are acceptable in American culture cannot ensure that students will behave in culturally appropriate ways in a similar situation in the target culture. This further indicates the necessity for American language learners to learn how to do things in school that would be appropriate in Chinese culture. The significance of in-school Chinese behavioral culture entails incorporating the school saga as a primary saga into Chinese language teaching and learning in K-12 and university language classrooms. Using the performance-based approach, this thesis discusses the design of the pedagogical materials which embody the support that teachers can provide for compiling the school saga. The results of the survey also contribute to the development of pedagogical materials for the language classroom.

Book excerpt: This book presents mixed-methods research into Chinese students' willingness to communicate (WTC) in an EFL classroom context. The interrelationships between WTC and motivation, communication confidence, learner beliefs and classroom environment are examined using structural equation modelling on data collected in a large-scale survey. These results are then complemented and expanded upon in a follow-up multiple case-study that identifies six themes which account for fluctuations of WTC over time and across situations. The qualitative and quantitative data provide the grounds for the proposition of an ecological model of WTC in the Chinese EFL university classroom, which reveals that WTC is socioculturally constructed as a function of the interaction of individual and environmental factors inside and beyond the classroom walls.
