Book Classifying Emotion Using Streaming of Physiological Correlates of Emotion

Download or read book Classifying Emotion Using Streaming of Physiological Correlates of Emotion written by Nathan J. Elmore and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability for a computer to recognize emotions would have many uses. In the field of human-computer interaction, it would be useful if computers could sense if a user is frustrated and offer help (Lisetti & Nasoz, 2002), or it could be used in cars to predict stress or road rage (Nasoz, Lisetti, & Vasilakos, 2010). Also, it has uses in the medical field with emotional therapy or monitoring patients (Rebenitsch, Owen, Brohil, Biocca, & Ferydiansyah, 2010). Emotion recognition is a complex subject that combines psychology and computer science, but it is not a new problem. When the question was first posed, researchers examined at physiological signals that could help differentiate an emotion (Schachter & Singer, 1962). As the research progressed, researchers examined ways in which computers could recognize emotions, many of which were successful. Previous research has not yet looked at the emotional data as streaming data, or attempted to classify emotion in real time. This thesis extracts features from a window of simulated streaming data to attempt to classify emotions in real time. As a corollary, this method can also be used to attempt to identify the earliest point an emotion can be predicted. The results show that emotions can be classified in real time, and applying a window and feature extraction leads to better classification success. It shows that this method may be used to determine if an emotion could be predicted before it is cognitively experienced, but it could not predict the emotion transitional state. More research is required before that goal can be achieved.

Book Physiological Correlates of Emotion

Download or read book Physiological Correlates of Emotion written by Perry Black and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Correlates of Emotion focuses on the major experimental approaches currently applied to the study of emotion and its physiological or behavioral parameters. It explores the heritability and developmental aspects of emotional behavior as well as its neurochemical and endocrine, neurophysiological, and psychophysiological correlates. In particular, it considers the modification of emotional behavior by intracranial administration of chemicals, the link between the limbic brain and psychoses, the role of nonspecific reticulo-thalamo-cortical systems in emotion, modulation of emotion by cerebral radio stimulation, and the role of brain function in emotion. Organized into five sections comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with a historical overview of research in emotion and behavior theory. It then discusses the studies dealing with heritability of emotional behavior in animals. The remaining chapters tackle the maturation of social-emotional patterns, localization of biogenic amines in the brain, psychophysiological experiments on the endocrine and autonomic correlates of emotional behavior, and psychotic manifestations of limbic dysfunction in humans. It explains the two-way radio communication with the human brain, the behavioral significance of bradycardia and hypotension, the perception and labeling of bodily changes as determinants of emotional behavior, and the conditioned emotional states. The book concludes with a phenomenological analysis of brain function in emotion. This book is essential reading for psychologists, psychiatrists, physiologists, and those working in the medical and behavioral sciences.

Book Handbook of Emotion Elicitation and Assessment

Download or read book Handbook of Emotion Elicitation and Assessment written by James A. Coan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emotion research has become a mature branch of psychology, with its own standardized measures, induction procedures, data-analysis challenges, and sub-disciplines. During the last decade, a number of books addressing major questions in the study of emotion have been published in response to a rapidly increasing demand that has been fueled by an increasing number of psychologists whose research either focus on or involve the study of emotion. Very few of these books, however, have presented an explicit discussion of the tools for conducting research, despite the facts that the study of emotion frequently requires highly specialized procedures, instruments, and coding strategies, and that the field has reached a place where a large number of excellent elicitation procedures and assessment instruments have been developed and validated. Emotion Elicitation and Assessment corrects this oversight in the literature by organizing and detailing all the major approaches and instruments for the study of emotion. It is the most complete reference for methods and resources in the field, and will serve as a pragmatic resource for emotion researchers by providing easy access to a host of scales, stimuli, coding systems, assessment tools, and innovative methodologies. This handbook will help to advance research in emotion by encouraging researchers to take greater advantage of standard and well-researched approaches, which will increase both the productivity in the field and the speed and accuracy with which research can be communicated.

Book Human Emotion Recognition from Physiological Biosignals

Download or read book Human Emotion Recognition from Physiological Biosignals written by Priyank G. Trivedi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this research is to develop and evaluate methods of classifying human emotions using physiological bio-signals. As computing technology has been steadily growing and becoming more ubiquitous, it is essential that intelligent computer systems can determine the affective state of human subjects and adjust accordingly. Moreover, the assessment of a subject's emotional state in real-time can facilitate advanced therapeutic intervention tools, such as Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET), which can complement the traditional approaches. Although physiological responses in humans have been shown to correlate with their affective state, accurately determining someone's emotion from bio-signals remains a challenge. In this work, we have developed and experimented with a set of machine learning tools to optimize the task of emotion classification using physiological bio-signals. In a series of experiments, using a publicly available dataset as well as a dataset we collected during sessions of virtual reality exposure therapy with veterans suffering from social anxiety, we evaluate the utility of automatic emotion recognition for improved human-computer interaction as well as its use as an objective metric of emotional response monitoring during therapeutic interventions.

Book Active Inference

  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Active Inference written by Thomas Parr and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive treatment of active inference, an integrative perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior used across multiple disciplines. Active inference is a way of understanding sentient behavior—a theory that characterizes perception, planning, and action in terms of probabilistic inference. Developed by theoretical neuroscientist Karl Friston over years of groundbreaking research, active inference provides an integrated perspective on brain, cognition, and behavior that is increasingly used across multiple disciplines including neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy. Active inference puts the action into perception. This book offers the first comprehensive treatment of active inference, covering theory, applications, and cognitive domains. Active inference is a “first principles” approach to understanding behavior and the brain, framed in terms of a single imperative to minimize free energy. The book emphasizes the implications of the free energy principle for understanding how the brain works. It first introduces active inference both conceptually and formally, contextualizing it within current theories of cognition. It then provides specific examples of computational models that use active inference to explain such cognitive phenomena as perception, attention, memory, and planning.

Book Classification of Human Emotions Based on Valence Arousal and Electroencephalogram

Download or read book Classification of Human Emotions Based on Valence Arousal and Electroencephalogram written by Shashikumar G S and published by Mohammed Abdul Sattar. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical issues in human behaviour are emotions. In daily interactions with others and in the making of decisions, emotion is significant. According to physiological concepts, emotion is a short-lived event. There is a close relation between emotion recognition and human wellness. The environment presented the constant demands, so that phenomenon of emotion represents efficient modes of adaptation. Human interaction has been categorised into two interaction channels: one transmits very clear messages, which is about anything or nothing and other one transmits embedded messages about the speakers themselves. In order to understand the channel which does not transmit clear messages, huge efforts were made towards the linguistic analysis. But the second is not as well understood. Understanding the other person's emotion is one of the key challenging tasks associated with the embedded message. Emotion can express through actions, such as words, sounds, facial expression, and body language, However, emotion expressed in such actions are sometimes manipulated by people and real feelings cannot be conveyed clearly. The emotion is referred by researchers as a mental state that is influenced by strong or deep brain impulses. This neural impulse arises subjectively but not through conscious effort. To move an organism into action, emotion induces either positive or negative psychological response. A cutting-edge area of computing called affective computing has been working to enhance human-computer interaction (HCI). Due to a lack of emotional intelligence, today's HCI systems are defective and unable to distinguish different emotional states in people. By recognizing emotional cues that emerge during HCI and evoking emotional reactions, affective computing seeks to close this gap. If computers can identify emotions, this will improve the design and development of systems that can do the same. The healthcare industry would benefit greatly from wearable technology that can distinguish different human emotions in real time and respond accordingly.

Book The Psychological Construction of Emotion

Download or read book The Psychological Construction of Emotion written by Lisa Feldman Barrett and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents cutting-edge theory and research on emotions as constructed events rather than fixed, essential entities. It provides a thorough introduction to the assumptions, hypotheses, and scientific methods that embody psychological constructionist approaches. Leading scholars examine the neurobiological, cognitive/perceptual, and social processes that give rise to the experiences Western cultures call sadness, anger, fear, and so on. The book explores such compelling questions as how the brain creates emotional experiences, whether the "ingredients" of emotions also give rise to other mental states, and how to define what is or is not an emotion. Introductory and concluding chapters by the editors identify key themes and controversies and compare psychological construction to other theories of emotion.
