Book Relationships in the Organization of Knowledge

Download or read book Relationships in the Organization of Knowledge written by A. Bean and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-03-31 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a goal of improving retrieval in bibliographic environments, this volume takes stock of what we know about relationships in the overall bibliographic domain, with particular emphasis on relationships between subjects, relationships among bibliographic entities, and relationships between subject content and user needs. The volume presents the current state of the art in examining the expression of relationships in some of the best thesauri and classification schemes in use throughout the world. It also looks to the future by providing guidance for relational tasks now taking on greater significance, as retrieval systems increasingly operate in automated modes and as retrieval systems cross linguistic, cultural, and disciplinary boundaries. By bringing together in one place the perspectives of some of the most prominent persons working in this arena, this volume should be of interest to researchers from library and information science, as well as computer science (artificial intelligence, knowledge representation, information retrieval, natural language processing), and to many practitioners, including: developers of thesauri and classification schemes; developers of Web search engines and search directories; indexers and subject cataloguers; and professional searchers.

Book Interdisciplinary Knowledge Organization

Download or read book Interdisciplinary Knowledge Organization written by Rick Szostak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes a novel approach to classification, discusses its myriad advantages, and outlines how such an approach to classification can best be pursued. It encourages a collaborative effort toward the detailed development of such a classification. This book is motivated by the increased importance of interdisciplinary scholarship in the academy, and the widely perceived shortcomings of existing knowledge organization schemes in serving interdisciplinary scholarship. It is designed for scholars of classification research, knowledge organization, the digital environment, and interdisciplinarity itself. The approach recommended blends a general classification with domain-specific classification practices. The book reaches a set of very strong conclusions: -Existing classification systems serve interdisciplinary research and teaching poorly. -A novel approach to classification, grounded in the phenomena studied rather than disciplines, would serve interdisciplinary scholarship much better. It would also have advantages for disciplinary scholarship. The productivity of scholarship would thus be increased. -This novel approach is entirely feasible. Various concerns that might be raised can each be addressed. The broad outlines of what a new classification would look like are developed. -This new approach might serve as a complement to or a substitute for existing classification systems. -Domain analysis can and should be employed in the pursuit of a general classification. This will be particularly important with respect to interdisciplinary domains. -Though the impetus for this novel approach comes from interdisciplinarity, it is also better suited to the needs of the Semantic Web, and a digital environment more generally. Though the primary focus of the book is on classification systems, most chapters also address how the analysis could be extended to thesauri and ontologies. The possibility of a universal thesaurus is explored. The classification proposed has many of the advantages sought in ontologies for the Semantic Web. The book is therefore of interest to scholars working in these areas as well.

Topics addressed are such as: bayesian networks, semantic networks, conceptual graphs, formal concept analysis, cp-nets, gai-nets, euler diagrams, existential graphs all of which have been successfully used in a number of applications (semantic Web, recommender systems, bioinformatics etc.).

Book Electronic Resources

Download or read book Electronic Resources written by Linda S Katz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Philosophies of Reference Service, reference librarians share with you their reflective thinking about what they do as service providers. An important addition to the personal and occupational library of anyone in reference services, this book discusses the origins of reference service, its founding principles, the pleasures and pitfalls of the reference encounter, delivering high-quality service, and much, much more! In a clever juxtaposition of the fundamentals of reference service provision with top-notch thinking about the role of the reference librarian and what makes a reference unit effective, Philosophies of Reference Service advocates for continuing familiarity with books in the reference section, recognizing the diversity of service users, and using collegiality in the work environment to boost productivity. It discusses why reference service should move toward instructing people in mediums, not systems, as well as: achieving consistency in reference service through “shared values” the concept of tiered reference services (based on survey research) the little-discussed “art” of reference desk scheduling the importance of knowing your user and making appropriate accommodations partnerships in reference services techniques for conducting reference rovering the advantages of print fostering widely grounded research through reference service why reference librarians share with the corporate world many of the same desired outcomes with regard to service provision Designed to assist readers in defining and developing their own approaches to reference service delivery, Philosophies of Reference Service offers reference librarians insight, practical knowledge, and guidelines for keeping on top of new reference techniques, establishing a partnership between the library and the user population, and maximizing the helpful nature of reference service.

Book The Psychology of Science Text Comprehension

Download or read book The Psychology of Science Text Comprehension written by José Otero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume's goal is to provide readers with up-to-date information on the research and theory of scientific text comprehension. It is widely acknowledged that the comprehension of science and technological artifacts is very difficult for both children and adults. The material is conceptually complex, there is very little background knowledge for most individuals, and the materials are often poorly written. Therefore, it is no surprise that students are turned off from learning science and technology. Given these challenges, it is important to design scientific text in a fashion that fits the cognitive constraints of the learner. The enterprise of textbook design needs to be effectively integrated with research in discourse processing, educational technology, and cognitive science. This book takes a major step in promoting such an integration. This volume: *provides an important integration of research and theory with theoretical, methodological, and educational applications; *includes a number of chapters that cover how science text information affects mental representations and strategies; *introduces important suggestions about how text design and new technologies can be thought of as pedagogical features; and *establishes academic text taxonomies and a consensus of the criteria to organize inferences and other mental mechanisms.
