Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The George River caribou herd increased from 15,000 animals in 1958 to 700,000 in 1988 - the largest herd in the world at the time. The authors trace the fluctuations in this caribou population back to the 1700s, detail how the herd escaped extinction in the 1950s, and consider current environmental threats to its survival. In an examination of the life history and population biology of the herd, The Return of Caribou to Ungava offers a synthesis of the basic biological traits of the caribou, a new hypothesis about why they migrate, and a comparison to herd populations in North America, Scandinavia, and Russia. The authors conclude that the old maxim, "Nobody knows the way of the caribou," is no longer valid. Based on a study in which the caribou were tracked by satellite across Ungava, they find that caribou are able to navigate, even in unfamiliar habitats, and to return to their calving ground, movement that is central to the caribou's cyclical migration. The Return of Caribou to Ungava also examines whether the herd can adapt to global warming and other changing environmental realities.

Book The Bluenose Caribou Herd 1974 1976

Download or read book The Bluenose Caribou Herd 1974 1976 written by Vernon Hawley and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A three year study (of varying intensity) into the size, composition, seasonal distribution, and movements of the Bluenose Caribou Herd was conducted between April 1974 and December 1976, inclusive, on the 29,000 km2 range lying between the Mackenzie and Coppermine rivers, Great Bear Lake, and the Arctic Ocean. Our April-May 1974 estimate of approximately 95,000 caribou, derived from the 3,452 caribou counted in the 9,585 km2 transect sample and modified by a confirmatory intensive survey of caribou concentrations wherein 10,142 caribou were counted in a 3,482 km2 transect sample, was considerably higher than the 39,000 caribou estimated during a comparable survey in March 1966, or the 30,000 to 35,000 generally estimated for the 1948-1953 period, and much higher than the 5,000 to 10,000 usually estimated between 1954 and 1960. Although a few deer winter along the coast in some years, most of the herd is relatively sedentary in the southern forested portions between the Mackenzie River and the east-southeast shore of Great Bear Lake. There is likely a fairly consistent separation of migration routes between the western and eastern wintering groups although most of them utilize common calving grounds in the area east of the Hornaday River south of Brock River. A small group of about 4500 animals utilize a calving area on the northern part of Cape Bathurst. Wintering caribou initiate their northward spring movement to the calving ground in February and early March generally pausing on the northern plains along the Mason River, between the Horton and Hornaday Rivers, and between Horton and Bluenose Lakes. Males tend to remain behind in the forests. In late May, the pregnant females proceed rapidly to the calving grounds in the Smoking Hills and Melville Hills while the males and yearlings travel more leisurely to the coastal plains. After calving, the females descend to lower elevations and less rugged terrain, where they mix with the groups of yearlings and young males that were left behind in the final rush of the calving migration, forming herds of several thousand in July. Those aggregations disperse in August and move across the tundra to the east end of Great Bear Lake, the area around Stopover Lake, the Coal Creek-Delesse Lake area, and the Mason River uplands. In late September and October, the animals begin to coalesce and move to or into the treeline where the rut occurs. They continue their movement to the wintering grounds in October and November. Sex and age composition show the Bluenose Herd has high initial productivity and good calf survival in comparison to most North American herds. The condition of the individuals was better than average as shown by body weight, rump fat thickness, percentage femoral fat, and kidney fat index. That condition suggests the range is in good condition. Harvests have been variable (850 to 1600 caribou) but reports from people living on the range suggest that reported kill is unreliable, so an assessment of the effect of harvest could not be determined. However, concern for the continuing harvest of calving females on Cape Bathurst was emphasized. Although it was concluded that there is a surplus of caribou that should be utilized, it was recommended that more reliable harvest statistics and a sample of the sexes and ages be obtained, along with an adequate October sex and age determination to permit application of a more refined management program"--Leaves vii-ix.

Book Caribou Distribution Abundance Movements Productivity and Survival Study Plan Section 10 6

Download or read book Caribou Distribution Abundance Movements Productivity and Survival Study Plan Section 10 6 written by Alaska. Department of Fish and Game and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufficient population information on caribou is needed to evaluate effects of the proposed Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project on important seasonal ranges, such as calving areas, rutting areas, wintering areas, and migration/movement corridors. The Nelchina caribou herd and Delta caribou herd will be studied in an area that includes most of Game Management Unit 13E east of and including Broad Pass, and will include also drainages empting into the upper Susitna River and the northwestern portion of Game Management Unit 13A, and areas on the south slope of the Alaska Range outside the Susitna basin. The study supplements ongoing ADF&G caribou research in the study area and surrounding region by increasing the sample size of radiocollared caribou from both the Nelchina caribou herd and the Delta caribou herd. Telemetry and GPS locations from these radiocollared caribou are being used to document the seasonal use of and movement through the Project area by both females and males of both herds, to document the extend of herd mixing between the two herds, to document productivity and survival of caribou using the Project area, and to compare current movements and distributions in the Project area to historical data. This document details Alaska Energy Authority's status in implementing the study as set forth in the FERC-approved Revised study plan.
