Book Classification and Interpretation of Marine Shell Artifacts from Western Mexico

Download or read book Classification and Interpretation of Marine Shell Artifacts from Western Mexico written by Robert Novella and published by British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited. This book was released on 1995 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation into the functional and symbolic uses of shells during the pre-conquest era in the Occidente region of Mexico. The author first provides a classification list of known examples, then proceeds to interpret those examples, giving information on provenance, find context, date and function. He concludes that the presence of shell artefacts in the region is the result of a deliberate selection of that material - since the species represented were of relatively little food value - for functional/symbolic purposes.

Book Naturalism and Our Knowledge of Reality

Download or read book Naturalism and Our Knowledge of Reality written by R. Scott Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical naturalism is taken to be the preferred and reigning epistemology and metaphysics that underwrites many ideas and knowledge claims. But what if we cannot know reality on that basis? What if the institution of science is threatened by its reliance on naturalism? R. Scott Smith argues in a fresh way that we cannot know reality on the basis of naturalism. Moreover, the "fact-value" split has failed to serve our interests of wanting to know reality. The author provocatively argues that since we can know reality, it must be due to a non-naturalistic ontology, best explained by the fact that human knowers are made and designed by God. The book offers fresh implications for the testing of religious truth-claims, science, ethics, education, and public policy. Consequently, naturalism and the fact-value split are shown to be false, and Christian theism is shown to be true.

Book Households on the Mimbres Horizon

Download or read book Households on the Mimbres Horizon written by Barbara J. Roth and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-03-28 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pithouse sites represent the basic form of occupation in the Mimbres Mogollon region of southwestern New Mexico from AD 200 to the late 900s. This study presents the results of excavations of one such site, called La Gila Encantada. Little is known about the variability present at pithouse sites away from the major Mimbres and Gila River Valleys. Nonriverine occupations have been understudied until now. This book describes subsistence and settlement practices and compares the results with recent research conducted at the larger villages in the Mimbres River Valley. Despite basic similarities in material culture, households at La Gila Encantada appear to have followed different trajectories than those along the rivers. Examining these differences, archaeologist Barbara J. Roth provides insights into some of the reasons why they existed and shows that the variability present in pithouse occupations over the years was tied to multiple factors, including environmental differences, economic practices, and the social composition of groups occupying the sites. With chapters assessing ceramic data, chipped and groundstone analysis, shell and mineral jewelry, and regional context, this look at the past offers relevant insights into current issues in Southwest archaeology, including identity, interaction, and household organization.

Book Basic Condition Reporting

Download or read book Basic Condition Reporting written by Southeastern Registrars Association and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good condition report is an accurate and informative account of an object’s state of preservation at a particular moment in time. Condition reports can have multiple functions such as recording the state of an object prior to an exhibition or loan, after exhibition or loan, to assist in collections planning, or as a tool for the treatment of an object. Most of these functions can be conducted by a registrar, curator, collections manager, or volunteer. A good condition report fills many critical needs including: Knowing the exact condition of an object before or after a loan Helping staff determine the stability of an object for exhibit or loan Limiting how often an object is handled Informing object handlers of unseen problems Showing the condition of an object over time to determine the rate of deterioration Setting priorities for conservation Assisting the staff in identifying similar objects Aiding in the valuation of an object for insurance purposes The fourth edition of Basic Condition Reporting: A Handbook proffers a standard vocabulary for all of the individuals in a museum that may be conducting condition reports. In an ideal world, everyone who does a condition report for an item would be trained in the exact same standards, use the same terminology, and use the exact same form, etc. However, the reality is that even if every registrar, collections manager, and curator in your institution does condition reports, each report will be slightly different. Then you throw in every intern, volunteer, or student that may assist and you will find a variety of methods and terminologies that appear. This volume provide a baseline that all of these people can work from so that any person who opens the condition report can understand what the problems on a particular piece include.
