Book Pliny the Elder and the Emergence of Renaissance Architecture

Download or read book Pliny the Elder and the Emergence of Renaissance Architecture written by Peter Fane-Saunders and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Naturalis historia by Pliny the Elder provided Renaissance scholars, artists and architects with details of ancient architectural practice and long-lost architectural wonders - material that was often unavailable elsewhere in classical literature. Pliny's descriptions frequently included the dimensions of these buildings, as well as details of their unusual construction materials and ornament. This book describes, for the first time, how the passages were interpreted from around 1430 to 1580, that is, from Alberti to Palladio. Chapters are arranged chronologically within three interrelated sections - antiquarianism; architectural writings; drawings and built monuments - thereby making it possible for the reader to follow the changing attitudes to Pliny over the period. The resulting study establishes the Naturalis historia as the single most important literary source after Vitruvius's De architectura.

Book The Archaeology of Etruscan Society

Download or read book The Archaeology of Etruscan Society written by Vedia Izzet and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late sixth century was a period of considerable change in Etruria; this change is traditionally seen as the adoption of superior models from Greece. In a re-alignment of agency, this book examines a wide range of Etruscan material culture - mirrors, tombs, sanctuaries, houses and cities - in order to demonstrate the importance of local concerns in the formation of Etruscan material culture. Drawing on theoretical developments, the book emphasises the deliberate nature of the smallest of changes in material culture form, and develops the concept of surface as a unifying key to understanding the changes in the ways Etruscans represented themselves in life and death. This concept allows a uniquely holistic approach to the archaeology of Etruscan society and has the potential for other archaeological investigations. The book will interest all scholars and students of classical archaeology.

Book Orientalism Aramaic and Kabbalah in the Catholic Reformation

Download or read book Orientalism Aramaic and Kabbalah in the Catholic Reformation written by Robert J. Wilkinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing upon the extraordinary circumstances of the production of the editio princeps of the Syriac New Testament in 1555 and establishing a reliable history of that edition, this book offers a new account of the origin of Syriac studies in Europe and a fresh evaluation of Catholic Orientalism in the sixteenth century. The reception of Syriac into the West is shown to have been characterised, under the influence of Egidio da Viterbo and Postel, by a Christian Kabbalistic world-view which also determined the reception of other Oriental languages. The companion volume The Kabbalistic Scholars of the Antwerp Polyglot Bible exhibits the continuing influence of Christian Kabbalism on later editions.
