Book Classical Chinese Furniture

Download or read book Classical Chinese Furniture written by Marcus Flacks and published by . This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique publication illuminates a fascinating and little-known area of Chinese decorative art--Chinese furniture of the 16th-18th centuries. These beautiful chairs, stools, cabinets, and tables are highly sought after and have become the fastest-growing area of collecting within China itself. Author Marcus Flacks begins the book with a historical overview to place the furniture in context and then traces the trends and changes in collecting over the past 30 years. The heart of "Classical Chinese Furniture" is the presentation of 52 masterpieces--all exceptional examples of great rarity--accompanied by detailed descriptions. These outstanding pieces--most never published before--teach an important lesson on the Chinese approach to aesthetics, craftsmanship, architecture, and culture. They have even affected, directly or indirectly, much of 20th-century art, design, and architecture. Complete with invaluable appendices that visually unlock the secrets of timber, joinery, regional production, and the art of restoration, "Classical Chinese Furniture" is an essential volume for collectors and experts--Western and Chinese alike--as well as for anyone interested in furniture, aesthetics, and interiors, or simply fascinated by the extraordinary beauty of the pieces themselves. Praise for "Classical Chinese Furniture" "One new tome coming out that I can't wait to get my manicured hands on is "Classical Chinese Furniture" by Marcus Flacks. He does a few things for us in this volume. He educates us on the secrets of timber, joinery, regional production, and the art of restoration of these fine--and often quite rare--pieces. More importantly, he presents 52 masterpieces to us in this glossy photo-filled book--most of which have never been published." --"Life in a Venti C"up blog "'Magnificent' best describes the hefty volume "Classical Chinese Furniture" written by Marcus Flacks...The fascinating text is accompanied by 200 jaw-dropping photographs that feature the kind of objects in heavy demand by well-heeled collectors both in this country and in China." - "San Jose Mercury News"

Book Classical Chinese Huanghuali Furniture from the Haven Collection

Download or read book Classical Chinese Huanghuali Furniture from the Haven Collection written by Chu-Pak Lau and published by Hku Museum and Art Gallery. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University Museum and Art Gallery at the University of Hong Kong presents Classical Chinese Huanghuali Furniture from the Haven Collection and publishes this informative edition in conjunction with the exhibition. Chinese huanghuali furniture is world-famous and, for the longest time, has been collected in both East and West. The fine selection displayed here shows both domestic furniture and scholars' items, such as brush pots and chests. In Ming dynasty China, traditional wood architecture and Buddhist thrones inspired Chinese furniture makers and, as trade expanded, so did the amount of hardwood furniture in the form of sophisticated movable pieces and built-in interiors. Ming furniture is known for its elegant lines and carved details. During the reign of Emperor Longqing (1567-1572) China opened its borders, previously implemented import bans were lifted and a greater variety of building materials became available. Consequently, during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) the most celebrated types of domestic furniture were made from huanghuali and zitan woods. The elegant dark hardwood with natural shine is remarkable for the fact that Chinese furniture is typically made from solid timber, not an invisible subconstruction covered by a decorative veneer, as is so often the case in the West. The strength of each individual element of a piece of furniture and the consistent color matter, as every detail is exposed and the precision of the joints and the size and position of the dowels are all visual elements of an often simple and graceful design. In some pieces the joints are detectible and accessible, sometimes demountable, or else expertly hidden in the more sophisticated pieces. Applied surface finishes were generally only a layer of wax; no stains or clear lacquer seals were added to the dense and inherently decorative woods.

Book Chinese Country Antiques

Download or read book Chinese Country Antiques written by Andrea McCormick and published by Schiffer Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new kind of antique Chinese furniture swept onto the market in the early 1990s. It appealed to people who were sure they did not like Chinese furniture, people who were ready for new ideas about Orientalia, and people who couldn't afford the five- and six-figure prices routinely attached to classical Chinese pieces. It struck a surprisingly sympathetic chord with Western tastes, and the prices are still surprisingly low. It comes from the last days of the emperors, and expresses a sense of creative freedom, vigor, and visual elegance. Here are cabinets, tables, chairs, and accessories in various woods and finishes to enhance each room of your home. This third edition offers a comprehensive and compelling look at Chinese country furniture from the consumer's point of view. 380 color images, some in room settings, others with great detail, bring the beautiful designs to life. A guide to pricing makes this a useful tool for collectors and dealers alike. Because of a changing political and economic landscape in China, this late-Ching furniture has flooded Western markets, giving retail customers equal footing with collectors and keeping prices reasonable, for now. Because the quality covers a wide range, it takes an informed buyer to navigate between the real and the not-quite-so-real. The information in this beautiful book will give readers the bearings they need to make the right decisions.

Book Classical Chinese Furniture from Weiyang

Download or read book Classical Chinese Furniture from Weiyang written by Jinhua Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, Chinese classical furniture from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries has become a major focus of international collectors and design scholars, who recognize a contemporary appeal in the furniture's grace and simplicity. In Classical Chinese Furniture from Weiyang, Zhang Jinhua uncovers an overlooked genre of material from the Weiyang region, made of local zhazhen wood. Zhang, who is a scholar and restorer of antique Chinese furniture, provides a broad introductory view of the literary, historical, aesthetic, social, and economic context in which the furniture was created, and expertly charts specific differences of details in design. At the heart of the book is the furniture itself, from bonsai stands to painting tables and elaborate canopy beds, which have been superbly photographed for this collection, presenting many pieces for the first time in publication. In addition, detailed drawings provide an intimate look at the ingenuity of many of the pieces. Classical Chinese Furniture from Weiyang is the first book to look exclusively at furniture from this region and will be essential for collectors and scholars with an interest in this vital time and place in Chinese art history.
