Book excerpt: The haunting and poignant story of a how a young Japanese girl's understanding of the historic and tragic bombing of Hiroshima is transformed by a memorial lantern-floating ceremony. Twelve-year-old Nozomi lives in the Japanese city of Hiroshima. She wasn't even born when the bombing of Hiroshima took place. Every year Nozomi joins her family at the lantern-floating ceremony to honor those lost in the bombing. People write the names of their deceased loved ones along with messages of peace, on paper lanterns and set them afloat on the river. This year Nozomi realizes that her mother always releases one lantern with no name. She begins to ask questions, and when complicated stories of loss and loneliness unfold, Nozomi and her friends come up with a creative way to share their loved ones' experiences. By opening people's eyes to the struggles they all keep hidden, the project teaches the entire community new ways to show compassion. Soul Lanterns is an honest exploration of what happened on August 6, 1945, and offers readers a glimpse not only into the rich cultural history of Japan but also into the intimate lives of those who recognize--better than most--the urgent need for peace.

Book excerpt: Since the development of photography in the mid-nineteenth century, the camera has been used as a tool of both discovery and preservation. Photographs bring alive our image of the past and can open a floodgate of memories and nostalgia or inspire curiosity and a sense of history. This intriguing visual history contains over two hundred photographs, all from private collections, of Connecticut's capital. These rare and previously unpublished views tell of Hartford's rich history--the Bushnell Memorial, the state capitol without its dome, and the great post office that filled the east lawn of the Old State House. They also tell of favorite places, such as De Pasquale's and Pippi's on Front Street and the Parma and the movie theaters and stores that filled Main Street. The photographs reveal a great deal about change and the energy and vision that has made Hartford the diverse and dynamic community it is today.

Book Lanterns On The Levee

Download or read book Lanterns On The Levee written by William Alexander Percy and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2012-09-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi, within the shelter of old traditions, aristocratic in the best sense, William Alexander Percy in his lifetime (1885–1942) was brought face to face with the convulsions of a changing world. Lanterns on the Levee is his memorial to the South of his youth and young manhood. In describing life in the Mississippi Delta, Percy bridges the interval between the semifeudal South of the 1800s and the anxious South of the early 1940s. The rare qualities of this classic memoir lie not in what Will Percy did in his life—although his life was exciting and varied—but rather in the intimate, honest, and soul-probing record of how he brought himself to contemplate unflinchingly a new and unstable era. The 1973 introduction by Walker Percy—Will's nephew and adopted son—recalls the strong character and easy grace of "the most extraordinary man I have ever known."

Book Catalogue of an Important Collection of Antique Historical Lamps Candlesticks Lanterns Relics Etc Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Important Collection of Antique Historical Lamps, Candlesticks, Lanterns, Relics, Etc The collection is particularly rich in American, English and German pewter, the American portion including pieces by Gleason and Boardman, and a small graceful specimen from the home of Josiah Quincy which, according to a family tradition, came from the famous workshop of Paul Revere, in Boston. Among the pieces of English pewter it will be noted that several bear hall-marks, which is of extremely rare occurrence. There is also a German pewter Horological Lamp of particular interest and value. Among the brass lamps and candlesticks are some fine examples of Colonial and English workmanship, of which the candlestick from the old U. S. S. "Constitution" is a very beautiful example. The collection also includes rare specimens in iron, tin, glass, bronze and clay, of particular interest among the latter being an early Dutch-American pottery lamp and a piece of Italian Majolica. The present catalogue has been compiled, or rather condensed, from Dr. Norton's own descriptive list. It was his custom to write a brief history of each piece as he secured it and as this memoranda was solely for his own use and never intended for publication as a sales catalogue, it has been thought advisable to retain only the more important features of his descriptions. As a quest for books or pamphlets of any kind on the subject of old Lamps is sure to reveal an astonishing dearth of literature extant in this engaging department of antiquarian lore, we will ask the recipient of this catalogue, if not interested, to preserve it for some friend who would perhaps be glad to keep it for reference.
