Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, James D. Watson, then just twentyfour, helped launch the greatest ongoing scientific quest of our time. Now, with unique authority and sweeping vision, he gives us the first full account of the genetic revolution—from Mendel’s garden to the double helix to the sequencing of the human genome and beyond. Watson’s lively, panoramic narrative begins with the fanciful speculations of the ancients as to why “like begets like” before skipping ahead to 1866, when an Austrian monk named Gregor Mendel first deduced the basic laws of inheritance. But genetics as we recognize it today—with its capacity, both thrilling and sobering, to manipulate the very essence of living things—came into being only with the rise of molecular investigations culminating in the breakthrough discovery of the structure of DNA, for which Watson shared a Nobel prize in 1962. In the DNA molecule’s graceful curves was the key to a whole new science. Having shown that the secret of life is chemical, modern genetics has set mankind off on a journey unimaginable just a few decades ago. Watson provides the general reader with clear explanations of molecular processes and emerging technologies. He shows us how DNA continues to alter our understanding of human origins, and of our identities as groups and as individuals. And with the insight of one who has remained close to every advance in research since the double helix, he reveals how genetics has unleashed a wealth of possibilities to alter the human condition—from genetically modified foods to genetically modified babies—and transformed itself from a domain of pure research into one of big business as well. It is a sometimes topsy-turvy world full of great minds and great egos, driven by ambitions to improve the human condition as well as to improve investment portfolios, a world vividly captured in these pages. Facing a future of choices and social and ethical implications of which we dare not remain uninformed, we could have no better guide than James Watson, who leads us with the same bravura storytelling that made The Double Helix one of the most successful books on science ever published. Infused with a scientist’s awe at nature’s marvels and a humanist’s profound sympathies, DNA is destined to become the classic telling of the defining scientific saga of our age.

Book Sing to the Lord an Old Song

Download or read book Sing to the Lord an Old Song written by Richard Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 2019-10 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some hymns simply have an extra sprinkling of divine magic. The first notes thrill from the organ, and we are home. There's little wonder that we refer to the majestic sound of choirs of angels: Surely the kingdom of God is full of the sound of singing. Author Richard H. Schmidt offers a homecoming of sorts in his newest book, Sing to the Lord an Old Song. His meditations on forty classic hymns remind us of a shared faith--by generations before and with generations to come. Though the words and tunes may be entrenched in memory, Schmidt sheds new light on these hymns, inviting us to think about the texts through various lenses of scripture, faith, and personal experience. His reflections are painstakingly honest about how and when he has come up short as a follower of Christ--as well as how he each time, he finds notes of forgiveness, love, and hope in these familiar songs. Saint Augustine explained the power of song in his oft-quoted adage that those who sing pray twice. Come, sing and pray of amazing grace. Amen. Alleluia!

Book The Hymnal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher N. Phillips
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2018-08-01
  • ISBN : 1421425939
  • Pages : 199 pages

Download or read book The Hymnal written by Christopher N. Phillips and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the culture of living with hymnbooks offers new insight into the histories of poetry, literacy, and religious devotion. It stands barely three inches high, a small brick of a book. The pages are skewed a bit, and evidence of a small handprint remains on the worn, cheap leather covers that don’t quite close. The book bears the marks of considerable use. But why—and for whom—was it made? Christopher N. Phillips’s The Hymnal is the first study to reconstruct the practices of reading and using hymnals, which were virtually everywhere in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Isaac Watts invented a small, words-only hymnal at the dawn of the eighteenth century. For the next two hundred years, such hymnals were their owners’ constant companions at home, school, church, and in between. They were children's first books, slaves’ treasured heirlooms, and sources of devotional reading for much of the English-speaking world. Hymnals helped many people learn to memorize poetry and to read; they provided space to record family memories, pass notes in church, and carry everything from railroad tickets to holy cards to business letters. In communities as diverse as African Methodists, Reform Jews, Presbyterians, Methodists, Roman Catholics, and Unitarians, hymnals were integral to religious and literate life. An extended historical treatment of the hymn as a read text and media form, rather than a source used solely for singing, this book traces the lives people lived with hymnals, from obscure schoolchildren to Emily Dickinson. Readers will discover a wealth of connections between reading, education, poetry, and religion in Phillips’s lively accounts of hymnals and their readers.

Book Hymns Historically Famous Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hymns Historically Famous Classic Reprint written by Nicholas Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hymns Historically Famous The purpose of this volume is twofold: To in epire a warmer love of Church song; and to make the reader better acquainted with that class of hymns which are noted for the history they have made. The special aim has been to take the more popular and useful of our familiar compositions and give a fuller and more connected story of the lives of the authors, the origin of the hymns, with incidents of interest and value illustrating their influence, than have yet appeared in any annotated hymnal either in America or Great Britain. Twenty-three chapters are devoted to Church hymns and gospel songs which have two common characteristics universal popularity, and the power to make spiritual history. Many hymns are historic solely because their origin is closely related to some striking event, or associated with some hallowed experience; and the rule governing the scope of the book has been re laxed that a few of those having particular merit, might be annotated. The chapter - Five Lay Hymn Writers - was inserted for two important reasons First, the position those consecrated laymen occupy in Church hymnody in all English-speaking coun tries, is unique; and, second, the hymns selected from their writings and printed in these pages, are of great poetic beauty, and add much to the pleasure and profitof public worship. There are many favorite hymns which are perfect in form, exquisite in thought and expression, and which no doubt interpret charming Christian experiences, but not being connected with noteworthy historical facts, they could not properly find a place in this volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the earliest beginnings of the Christian Church, believers have gathered to worship God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They have expressed their faith by singing "psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in their hearts to God" (Colossians 3:16). One of the best ways to learn about and enter into what Christians believe is to sing the classic, well-known, deeply-loved hymns of our tradition. In Unwearied Praises, readers are invited to reflect upon the experience of classic hymns as a doorway into the historic beliefs and spiritual insights that have defined Christianity for centuries. Each chapter includes Scripture references and questions for reflection, making this an excellent resource for a small group study or personal enrichment. "The current rediscovery of hymnology for worship will be greatly enhanced by this theologically astute yet highly practical volume of classic hymns. I hope, for the sake of the church's spiritual health, Unwearied Praises, will receive a wide readership." -Robert E. Webber, Author of Ancient-Future Faith and Blended Worship Jeffrey P.
