Book American Hero Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Hero Stories Classic Reprint written by Eva March Tappan and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Hero Stories This volume contains five accounts of voyagers and explorers, ranging from Columbus to Lewis and Clark; stories of five colonies of marked dissimilarity- Virginia, Quebec, Plymouth, New York, and Philadelphia; brief lives of four pioneers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; and fifteen short stories of war times. In treating of our wars, it seemed wisest not to attempt any formal explanation of causes and results, but rather to picture a number of separate and interesting achievements, choosing as far as possible actions that have distinct heroes. The chapters are arranged in chronological order, with a thread of continuity running through them. The aim of the book is to introduce in informal and friendly fashion some of the makers of American history, and to provide a simple, broad foundation for future study of history and biography. Acknowledgments are due to the courtesy of the following for permission to use their material for illustrations; to The Title Guarantee and Trust Co. of New York for New Amsterdam in Stuyvesant's Time; to Mr. C.M. Barton, President of the Historical Society of Michigan, for Gladwyn's Warning from the Indian Girl; to Mr. Charles E.Goodspeed for Washington at the Delaware; to McClure's Magazine for portrait of Daniel Boone; to the New England Magazine for The Indian Woman who Guided Lewis and Clark and the Seal of the Lewis and Clark Exposition; to The Outing Magazine for The Marriage and The March of David Crockett. Book American Heroes Profiles of Men and Women Who Shaped Early America

Download or read book American Heroes Profiles of Men and Women Who Shaped Early America written by Edmund S. Morgan and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wise, humane and beautifully written book." —Bret Stephens, Wall Street Journal From the best-selling author of Benjamin Franklin comes this remarkable work that will help redefine our notion of American heroism. Americans have long been obsessed with their heroes, but the men and women dramatically portrayed here are not celebrated for the typical banal reasons contained in Founding Fathers hagiography. Effortlessly challenging those who persist in revering the American history status quo and its tropes and falsehoods, Morgan, now ninety-three, continues to believe that the past is just not the way it seems.

Book Hero Stories From American History

Download or read book Hero Stories From American History written by Albert F. Blaisdell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hero Stories From American History: For Elementary Schools This book is intended to be used as a supplementary historical reader for the sixth and seventh grades of our public schools, or for any other pupils from twelve to fifteen years of age. It is also designed for collateral reading in connection with the study of a formal text-book on American history. The period here included is the first fifty years of our national life. No attempt has been made, however, to present a connected account, or to furnish a birds-eye view, of this half century. It is the universal testimony of experienced teachers that such materials as are pervaded with reality serve a useful purpose with young pupils. The reason is plain. Historical matter that is instinct with human life attracts and holds the attention of boys and girls, and whets their desire to know more of the real meaning of their country's history. For this reason the authors have selected rapid historical narratives, treating of notable and dramatic events, and have embellished them with more details than is feasible within the limits of most schoolbooks. Free use has been made of personal incidents and anecdotes, which thrill us because of their human element, and smack of the picturesque life of our forefathers. It has seemed advisable to arrange the subjects in chronological order. As the various chapters have appeared in proof, they have been put to a practical test in the sixth grade in several grammar schools. Book Classic Legendary Hero Stories

Download or read book Classic Legendary Hero Stories written by Stephen Vincent Brennan and published by Globe Pequot. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is filled with myth. Heroes and icons from our distant past are no longer remembered by people who actually experienced them. They are remembered by the stories passed down from generation to generation. After so many centuries have passed, it is often difficult to discern who was truly alive, and who lived only in the minds of the storytellers. Fictional beings are no less capable than real-life heroes of teaching society a lesson, or exemplifying what the reader believes is right and just, or downright evil. Whether or not the characters in a story were ever alive is a decision each reader will have to make on their own. Regardless of when or where the characters may have lived, each story in this collection will share with the reader some moral lesson that applies to the world today. Classic Legendary Hero Stories includes characters from a variety of places and time periods, including: Gilgamesh; Young David (Goliath's foe); Odysseus; Beowulf; El Cid; Richard Lionheart; Robin Hood; King Arthur; and Rama the Indian Prince.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hero Tales from American History by Henry Cabot Lodge and Theodore Roosevelt brings together stories of the heroism, grit and determination of some well-known and lesser-known people who played significant roles in shaping the history of America. It brings out the bravery, daring and endurance to fight against all odds. In the bargain this title is nothing short of inspirational. Both authors are men of eminence in their own right and hence there is an underlying authoritative ring in the narrative which stands out. Hero Tales from American History starts with a touching preface that defines the foundations on which the present day USA is built. The book provides chapters dedicated to various men of honour including George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Lincoln and many others. Each section is well researched and gripping. The two authors have taken great pains in bringing out the valour and perseverance of their respective heroes which makes this title difficult to put down once started. Little known facts, anecdotes and incidents find their place in the book and portions dedicated to important events like the Battle of Trenton and Storming of Stony Point are worth a mention. The authors provide visual respite through various illustrations spread across the length of the book which give perspective to the narrative. In its endeavour, Hero Tales from American History not only caters to students of American history but the casual reader as well, it inspires the reader to be a better human being and appreciate the hardships and challenges the heroes in this book overcame.
