Book Classic Adelaide and Its Environs

Download or read book Classic Adelaide and Its Environs written by Bernard Whimpress and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this publication some of South Australia's finest buildings and monuments are showcased in all their splendour. Along with its stunning visual representation, there are highlights of each building or monument's history and structural features. South Australia's free settlement is unique among the states. From the vision of the founding forefathers to its traditional and conservative history of town planners, conscientious efforts were made to preserve the architectural grace and character of Adelaide and its environs. Colonel William Light's statue stands sentinel on Montefiore Hill pointing to the classic lines of the Adelaide Oval by the River Torrens, and the parade of magnificent buildings to be found along North Terrace. The treasures continue far beyond the bounds of Adelaide city's CBD, with examples such as Townsend House, the Hahndorf Academy and Auchendarroch House.

Book The Life and Times of Queen Adelaide Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life and Times of Queen Adelaide Classic Reprint written by Mary Frances Sandars and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Times of Queen Adelaide This book, like all other undertakings, has suffered from the Great Upset, as it has been called, of the War. By the kind permission of the authorities of saxe-meiningen, photographs of portraits of Queen Adelaide's parents, and of herself as child, young lady, and bride, were to have graced these pages. However, the war broke out just as, preliminaries having been arranged, the Court photographer was about to execute his task in the Castle of saxe-meiningen, and very naturally I have never received the photo graphs. Book History of the City of Adelaide

Download or read book History of the City of Adelaide written by Thomas Worsnop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of Adelaide: From the Foundation of the Province of South Australia in 1836, to the End of the Municipal Year 1877, With Appendix and Map The scope and object of this work are to attempt to elucidate the origin and progress of this City, with a view to deserve the attention of the citizens, and the Author ventures to hope that the work will not be without interest to some of the class of general readers. The student of the history of this Province finds his enquiries continually directed to the effects of corporate rights and interests, and their influence on the inhabitants of the City, as well as on the public generally, and in no point are these topics unworthy of careful investigation, or of the notice of the public at large. In the work now submitted to the public, the Author has felt how impossible it has been to accomplish his objects without, to some extent, reviewing historically the rise and progress of the Province, especially in the earlier period of its existence, and in its relative connection with the history of the City, for the legislative power of the Crown (as shown in the policy of the Governors) was then absolute, differing materially from its power in Imperial legislation, or after the establishment of Responsible Government in the Province. He also feels that at times he appears too digressive, but this was hardly to be avoided in the attempt to display the various and changing interests which have affected the City. His object has been to supply easilv accessible information to such as are most concerned in attaining it; but neither to them nor to the general reader can he profess to offer other entertainment than what attends the rational pursuit of useful knowledge. It may be observed that the greatest part of the information contained in the following pages is not to be found in a compiled form elsewhere, it having been collated from various sources, although a large portion of it necessarily consists of extracts from the Municipal Records, and is given in this form to the public to throw light on the local history of the City, and, as far as possible, with the means at his command, a distinct view is given of the successive changes which have occurred, and he commends it to the candid consideration of the historical enquirer. It is not generally known that Adelaide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
