Book Class 50s in Operation

Download or read book Class 50s in Operation written by David N. Clough and published by . This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1960s, with the ongoing electrification of the West Coast main line south of Crewe and the imminent withdrawal of main line steam, London Midland Region faced an hiatus in terms of motive power of WCML services north towards Glasgow. The solution was to hire 50 brand-new diesel-electric locomotives to be built by English Electric. The locomotives entered service in 1967 and for the next seven years, until the completion of electrification through to Glasgow, were to provide motive power for WCML services to Glasgow. Once this initial phase was over, the locomotives were transferred to Western Region, where they helped in the replacement of the diesel-hydraulic classes before the arrival of the HSTs. Latterly based in the West Country, the class's final years of glory was to see examples in regular service over the Waterloo-Exeter line. Such was the popularity of the type, that almost half of the class was to survive into preservation. David Clough, one of Britain's foremost experts on railway performance, has been closely involved with the Class 50s from the start and is of the leading members of the main Class 50 preservation society. As such, he is ideally placed to provide the first detailed operational history of the class to have been published for more than a decade. Drawing upon his own records and photographic archive, supplemented by the work of other notable railway records and photographers, he pleces together the operational record of the class, examining their antecedents, the construction and early years on the LMR, and the final decades on the Western and Southern regions. This new volume devoted to this highly popular class will be much sought after by all those involved today with the preservation of the surviving examples as well as those who recall their glory days. With its most recent railway titles, Ian Allan Publishing has established itself at the forefront of publishers covering the early diesel era; this new volume will enhance yet further the reputation of the imprint for quality books on the subject.

Book excerpt: The 1980s saw the English Electric Class 50s become synonymous with operations out of two London terminus stations, Paddington and Waterloo. The famous Brunel terminus saw commuter services along the Thames Valley corridor to Oxford and Newbury as well as InterCity trains to Bristol and the West Country. Meanwhile, Waterloo was the origin of services over the former South Western route to Salisbury and Exeter. This book takes a pictorial look at the operation of the mighty 'Hoovers' on both routes with a particular focus on the London end during the type's final years with Network SouthEast. Some time is also spent at Old Oak Common depot, where many of the class were based for maintenance for many years and some ultimately met their end.

Book English Electric Class 50 Diesels

Download or read book English Electric Class 50 Diesels written by Peter Green and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gallery of spectacular photos celebrating the history of these popular locomotives of the late twentieth century. Peter J. Green first photographed Class 50 diesels in action in 1975, while they were still being transferred from the London Midland to the Western Region of British Rail. But it was in the early 1980s, when they were named and painted in Large Logo livery, that his interest in the class really took off. For Peter, they stood out from most other locomotives that were painted in the rather drab Rail Blue livery. The sound of the locomotives, particularly when running at speed, was also very impressive, producing shouts of “50!” from waiting photographers, even before the train was in sight. The class became a particular target for his railway photography and many of his trips were made with them in mind. They regularly worked trains around his hometown of Worcester, so if he did not want to go too far, it was easy to find a satisfactory subject at which to point his camera. Before their withdrawal in the late 1980s and early 1990s, they were used on many rail tours, which always provided good photographic opportunities. Today, with many of the class working on heritage railways, and a number of privately owned locomotives registered for main line use, there is still plenty to keep his cameras occupied. A selection of Peter’s best photos of the Class 50 diesels, taken over a period of forty-five years, appear in these pages.

Book British Diesel Locomotives of the 1950s and 60s

Download or read book British Diesel Locomotives of the 1950s and 60s written by Greg Morse and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Second World War, the drive for the modernisation of Britain's railways ushered in a new breed of locomotive: the Diesel. Diesel-powered trains had been around for some time, but faced with a coal crisis and the Clean Air Act in the 1950s, it was seen as a part of the solution for British Rail. This beautifully illustrated book, written by an expert on rail history, charts the rise and decline of Britain's diesel-powered locomotives. It covers a period of great change and experimentation, where the iconic steam engines that had dominated for a century were replaced by a series of modern diesels including the ill-fated 'Westerns' and the more successful 'Deltics'.

Book Bowling Alone Revised and Updated

Download or read book Bowling Alone Revised and Updated written by Robert D. Putnam and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated to include a new chapter about the influence of social media and the Internet—the 20th anniversary edition of Bowling Alone remains a seminal work of social analysis, and its examination of what happened to our sense of community remains more relevant than ever in today’s fractured America. Twenty years, ago, Robert D. Putnam made a seemingly simple observation: once we bowled in leagues, usually after work; but no longer. This seemingly small phenomenon symbolized a significant social change that became the basis of the acclaimed bestseller, Bowling Alone, which The Washington Post called “a very important book” and Putnam, “the de Tocqueville of our generation.” Bowling Alone surveyed in detail Americans’ changing behavior over the decades, showing how we had become increasingly disconnected from family, friends, neighbors, and social structures, whether it’s with the PTA, church, clubs, political parties, or bowling leagues. In the revised edition of his classic work, Putnam shows how our shrinking access to the “social capital” that is the reward of communal activity and community sharing still poses a serious threat to our civic and personal health, and how these consequences have a new resonance for our divided country today. He includes critical new material on the pervasive influence of social media and the internet, which has introduced previously unthinkable opportunities for social connection—as well as unprecedented levels of alienation and isolation. At the time of its publication, Putnam’s then-groundbreaking work showed how social bonds are the most powerful predictor of life satisfaction, and how the loss of social capital is felt in critical ways, acting as a strong predictor of crime rates and other measures of neighborhood quality of life, and affecting our health in other ways. While the ways in which we connect, or become disconnected, have changed over the decades, his central argument remains as powerful and urgent as ever: mending our frayed social capital is key to preserving the very fabric of our society.

Book Britain s Railways Through the Seasons

Download or read book Britain s Railways Through the Seasons written by David Goodyear and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four seasons pass by like a gliding ship, each signalled by a transformation of changing colors and hues of light, thus providing a form of marker to these passages of time. Living in the temperate zone we experience four distinct seasons. The railway scene reflects such in its own special character - cold winter air enhances the bountiful steam escaping from the hissing steam locomotive impatiently awaiting its departure, while autumn enchants with trees that exude a variety of hues which embellish any image of even the most mundane suburban train. Springtime blossom and wild flowers bestow railway cuttings with a bounty of generous bright colors while coastal railways often look most inviting on warm sunny days as they pass alongside azure seas and golden beaches. The seasons each add their own dimension for the photographer to encapsulate, and railways passing through the ever-changing landscape provide their own tribute to this inspirational tapestry. As readers travel through each season, so they are invited to share this awe and constant source of inspiration from nature's kaleidoscope of color. Photographs are provided with captions and reflective commentary to enlighten the knowledgeable rail enthusiast alongside those who equally enjoy such a portrait of landscape and scenery through the seasons. The range of photographs ranges from the mid -1980's to the present with the majority from the last two decades.

  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book Running the Numbers written by Matthew Vaz and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day in the United States, people test their luck in numerous lotteries, from state-run games to massive programs like Powerball and Mega Millions. Yet few are aware that the origins of today’s lotteries can be found in an African American gambling economy that flourished in urban communities in the mid-twentieth century. In Running the Numbers, Matthew Vaz reveals how the politics of gambling became enmeshed in disputes over racial justice and police legitimacy. As Vaz highlights, early urban gamblers favored low-stakes games built around combinations of winning numbers. When these games became one of the largest economic engines in nonwhite areas like Harlem and Chicago’s south side, police took notice of the illegal business—and took advantage of new opportunities to benefit from graft and other corrupt practices. Eventually, governments found an unusual solution to the problems of illicit gambling and abusive police tactics: coopting the market through legal state-run lotteries, which could offer larger jackpots than any underground game. By tracing this process and the tensions and conflicts that propelled it, Vaz brilliantly calls attention to the fact that, much like education and housing in twentieth-century America, the gambling economy has also been a form of disputed terrain upon which racial power has been expressed, resisted, and reworked.
