Book excerpt: Located at the falls of the Ohio River, Clarksville's history extends back to the Revolutionary War. Named in honor of General George Rogers Clark, the town was founded in 1783. Captured here in over 200 vintage images are the trials and triumphs of America's first town established in the Old Northwest Territory. Despite its historical importance, many people are unaware of Clarksville's unique place in America's development of the Midwest. As well as being the recruitment location for Captains Lewis and Clark's nucleus of the Corps of Discovery, the little town was also the site of one of Indiana's earliest state prisons. Over the centuries, its identity wavered from prison town, Civil War camp, and the center of nightlife and gambling for the entire Louisville metropolitan area. With the housing boom of World War II, Clarksville's population soared. Pictured here are the residents, businesses, and homes that survived some of the town's most trying times and ultimately defined the area, including the Graninger Home, the original Club Greyhound, Camp Joe Holt, and infamous Cell House C.

Book excerpt: Clarksville, Tennessee, has undergone a colossal metamorphosis since the 1700s, when men like Sevier, Montgomery, and Renfroe fought Native Americans along the Cumberland and Red Rivers. Though these founding fathers would not recognize the present rivers, nor the hills upon which Clarksville has grown, Clarksvillians have kept an awareness of their rich past, bridging their lives with those of the early frontiersmen. Today, Clarksville eclectically blends both metropolitan and rural settings to offer residents the best of both worlds.

This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indiana, Alabama & Texas Railroad emerged from a proposal to build a line between Mobile, Alabama, and Evansville, Indiana. Despite its grand plans, the railroad completed only about 30 miles of narrow gauge track from Clarksville, Tennessee, toward Princeton, Kentucky. The Louisville & Nashville Railroad purchased the railroad in 1886 and converted the line to standard gauge. The Louisville & Nashville abandoned the route, later known as the Clarksville & Princeton Branch, in May 1933, relegating it to the history books. Author Todd DeFeo recounts the captivating story of this largely forgotten railroad.
