In tum Wiskobas was one of the depart ments in the IOWO, the Institute for the Development of Mathematics Education. This institute was concerned with the development of material for mathematics education as well as the related research on the possibility of change from the then existing arithmetic instruction to the future mathematics education. The present publication Three Dimensions has three aims: to give a picture of the goals Wiskobas set for future mathematics education, at the same time to show how such goals can be described, and to show the theoretical framework of the Wiskobas curriculum. The problem at hand is not at all simple. What is more, Wiskobas' ideas about mathematics education cannot literally be translated into strings of words. So how can we face the accusation that our objectives are unattain able and the goal itself irrational? In order to avoid this vagueness as much as possible and for the sake of clarity, this book makes continuous use of illustrations of mathematics education. In these examples both the subject-matter and the methods of description of the goals are illustrated as explicitly as possible, while at the same time creating the opportunity to read between the lines. The reader is urged to follow carefully the mathe matical material at the start of each chapter. This advice applies both to the more general education oriented, and to the more mathematical! didactical reader.

Central issues of this connection, however, lack a clear answer. For instance, how much freedom do judges have in applying the law? How are the literal and the purposive approaches related to one another? How can we distinguish between applying the law and making the law? This book provides answers by means of a complex and detailed theory of literal meaning. A new legal method is introduced, namely the further development of the law. It is so far unknown in Anglo-American jurisprudence, but it is shown that this new method helps in solving some of the most crucial puzzles in jurisprudence. At its centre the book addresses legal indeterminism and refutes linguistic-philosophical reasons for indeterminacy. It spells out the normative character of interpretation as emphasized by Raz and, with the help of Robert Brandom's normative pragmatics, it is shown that the relativism of interpretation from a normative perspective does not at all justify scepticism. On the contrary, it supports the claim that legal argumentation can be objective, and maintains that statements on the meaning of a statute can be right or wrong, and take on inter-subjective validity accordingly. This book breaks new ground in transferring Brandom's philosophy to legal theoretical problems and presents an original and exciting analysis of the semantic argument in legal argumentation. It was the recipient of the European Award for Legal Theory in 2002. It is self-contained, giving a careful treatment of both the known techniques and the authors' new methods. The distance estimation technique was originally applied to Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set in the complex plane. It was justified, through the work of Douady and Hubbard, by deep results in complex analysis. In this book the authors generalise the distance estimation to quaternionic and other higher dimensional fractals, including fractals derived from iteration in the Cayley numbers (octonionic fractals). The generalization is justified by new geometric arguments that circumvent the need for complex analysis. This puts on a firm footing the authors' present work and the second author's earlier work with John Hart and Dan Sandin. The results of this book will be of great interest to mathematicians and computer scientists interested in fractals and computer graphics.
