Book The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women

Download or read book The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women written by June Hall McCash and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cultural Patronage of Medieval Women is the first volume exclusively devoted to an examination of the significant role played by women as patrons in the evolution of medieval culture. The twelve essays in this volume look at women not simply as patrons of letters but also as patrons of the visual and decorative arts, of architecture, and of religious and educational foundations. Patronage as a means of empowerment for women is an issue that underlies many of the essays. Among the other topics discussed are the various forms patronage took, the obstacles to women's patronage, and the purposes behind patronage. Some women sought to further political and dynastic agendas; others were more concerned with religion and education; still others sought to provide positive role models for women. The amusement of their courts was also a consideration for female patrons. These essays also demonstrate that as patrons women were often innovators. They encouraged vernacular literature as well as the translation of historical works and of the Bible, frequently with commentary, into the vernacular. They led the way in sponsoring a variety of genres and encouraged some of the best-known and most influential writers of the Middle Ages. Moreover, they were at the forefront in fostering the new art of printing, which made books accessible to a larger number of people. Finally, the essays make clear that behind much patronage lay a concern for the betterment of women.

Book A History of the University of Cambridge Volume 4 1870 1990

Download or read book A History of the University of Cambridge Volume 4 1870 1990 written by Christopher Brooke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of A History of the University of Cambridge and explores the extraordinary growth in size and academic stature of the University between 1870 and 1990. Though the University has made great advances since the 1870s, when it was viewed as a provincial seminary, it is also the home of tradition: a federation of colleges, one over 700 years old, one of the 1970s. This book seeks to penetrate the nature of the colleges and of the federation; and to show the way in which university faculties and departments have come to vie with the colleges for this predominant role. It attempts to unravel a fascinating institutional story of the society of the University and its place in the world. It explores in depth the themes of religion and learning, and of the entry of women into a once male environment. There are portraits of seminal and characteristic figures of the Cambridge scene, and there is a sketch - inevitably selective but wide-ranging - of many disciplines, an extensive study in intellectual and academic history.

Book excerpt: -A revised, updated version of the enchanting biography of Elizabeth de Burgh, Lady of Clare, originally published in Britain and America in 1999 -Contains beautiful new illustrations and additional material -Elizabeth de Burgh was an unusual medieval woman that lived a fascinating, varied life - she promoted education and managed her own property, whilst also living in piety in her various dwellings in East Anglia, London, Wales and Ireland - all of which are shrewdly captured in this new title Elizabeth de Burgh was that unusual medieval woman, one who, after being widowed three times, held firmly on to her own property and managed it for her own and her family's benefit. The granddaughter of King Edward I, she lived during the turbulent reign of her uncle, Edward II, and survived to old age during the more settled times in the mid-fourteenth century when his son, Edward III, was on the throne. She was shrewd in her business dealings, cultivated men and women who would support and help her as both colleagues and friends, and lived a pious life in her various dwellings in East Anglia, London, Wales, and Ireland. She was unusual for the time in seeking to promote education, and as a result her name lives on today in her most prestigious foundation, Clare College, Cambridge. This book is a reprint with additional material and new illustrations of the original biography published both in Britain and America in 1999.
