The reviews were both encouraging and helpful and did justice to the intentions of the author. Before this, no book on the History of German Civilization was published in English. And yet there was a pressing need for it, in view of the faulty information as to German character and German institutions found everywhere in the United States and in Great Britain, especially in the daily press. My book tries to supply this need. It traces sources and currents of historical development from which alone the German man and the German people of to-day can be understood. In this it was less my endeavor to tell nice little stories than to show the relations which explain the present by the past, the products of civilization and culture by their time. In the limited space offered by the pages of a single volume there was, of course, only an opportunity for rambles and vistas into the wide field whose scientific investigation has just begun. Though I may not bring anything new to one familiar with German history, I still believe to have thrown new light on some old conceptions and to have contributed in a modest way to a better knowledge of the German national soul. How did cognitive values—and subsequently moral, political, and social ones—come to be modelled around scientific values? In Civilization and the Culture of Science, Stephen Gaukroger explores how these values were shaped and how they began, in turn, to shape those of society. The core nineteenth- and twentieth-century development is that in which science comes to take centre stage in determining ideas of civilization, displacing Christianity in this role. Christianity had provided a unifying thread in the study of the world, however, and science had to match this, which it did through the project of the unity of the sciences. The standing of science came to rest or fall on this question, which the book sets out to show in detail is essentially ideological, not something that arose from developments within the sciences, which remained pluralistic and modular. A crucial ingredient in this process was a fundamental rethinking of the relations between science and ethics, economics, philosophy, and engineering. In his engaging description of this transition to a scientific modernity, Gaukroger examines five of the issues which underpinned this shift in detail: changes in the understanding of civilization; the push to unify the sciences; the rise of the idea of the limits of scientific understanding; the concepts of 'applied' and 'popular' science; and the way in which the public was shaped in a scientific image.

The official story of Western Civilization in the twentieth century casts Germany as the disturber of the peace in Europe, and the cause of both World War I and World War II, though the facts dont bear that out. During both wars, fantastic atrocity stories were invented by Allied propaganda to create hatred of the German people for the purpose of bringing public opinion around to support the wars. The Holocaust propaganda which emerged after World War II further solidified this image of Germany as historys ultimate villain. But how true is this official story? Was Germany really historys ultimate villain? In this book, the author paints a different picture. He explains that Germany was not the perpetrator of World War I nor World War II, but instead, was the victim of Allied aggression in both wars. The instability wrought by World War I made the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution in Russia possible, which brought world Communism into existence. Hitler and Germany recognized world Communism, with its base in the Soviet Union, as an existential threat to Western, Christian Civilization, and he dedicated himself and Germany to a death struggle against it. Far from being the disturber of European peace, Germany served as a bulwark which prevented Communist revolution from sweeping over Europe. The pity was that the United States and Britain did not see Communist Russia in the same light, ultimately with disastrous consequences for Western Civilization. The author believes that Britain and the United States joined the wrong side in the war.
