Download or read book An Inclusive Environment written by Maritz Vandenberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-24 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People can be excluded from freedom and the good things in life by age, disability, poverty, unfair discrimination, crime or the fear of crime, and arrogant and unresponsive governments. This practical reference deals with all of these factors, and shows the links between them. In addition to several hundred shorter notes it includes over a thousand major entries, each of which comprises: a summary of relevant facts, incisive commentary to help readers cut through the fog of jargon and propaganda that confuses many of these issues and websites where the latest information may be found. It concludes with a detailed bibliography of around 500 useful references. The work will be found useful by professionals and managers in all walks of life; by central and local government officials and representatives, and by students in the social sciences. It devotes particular attention to the all-important Disability Discrimination Act, and numerous detailed entries, accompanied in many cases by elegant diagrams, suggest to architects and other designers, facilities managers, and personnel managers how the requirements of the Act may be met.

Download or read book Thinking of Design written by German T. Cruz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SYNOPSIS This book is the product of a lifetime of study, practice, and observation of design focused upon a considerate reaction to various issues that have emerged over the past 10 years. It is circumscribed by current experiences of teaching and observations of practice and administration from the point of view of an experienced practitioner transplanted to academia. With a wide worldview and often tongue in cheek, free commentary is offered on design issues and the context of their application and exploration. The book thematic is not focused on being a design treatise but rather upon offering an analytical argument about conditions and dynamics often seen as deleterious to design outcome and educational success. The passionate engagement of the author with design and its educational context as well as an active dialogue with local community by way of a newspaper voice serve well to present a discussion that is both informed and energetic.

Download or read book Social Disciplining and Civilising Processes in China written by Thomas Heberer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that a major part of the Chinese government’s road map, formulated in 2017, to modernise China comprehensively by 2049 is the process of social disciplining. It contends that the Chinese state sees that modernisation and modernity encompass not only economic and political–administrative change but are also related to the organisation of society in general and the disciplining of this society and its individuals to create people with “modernised” minds and behaviour; and that, moreover, the Chinese state is aspiring to a modernity with “Chinese characteristics”. The question of modernising by disciplining was extensively dealt with in the twentieth century by leading Western social scientists including Max Weber, Norbert Elias and Michel Foucault, who argued that disciplining, extending from external coercion towards the internalisation of restraints, is indispensable for achieving social order and thereby for “civilisation” –but defined from a European perspective, in relation to developments in Europe. This book therefore not only discusses the Chinese experience of social disciplining, but also, by looking at a non-Western society, identifies universal tendencies of societal change and social disciplining and separates them from particular occurrences.
