Book excerpt: The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) put over three million men to work doing conservation and recreation work on public and some private lands from 1933 to 1942. In Washington state 44,139 men participated as enrollees. In nearby states enrollee participation was: Idaho at 21,330 and Montana at 22,755. In 1937 Direct Advertising Company of Baton Rouge, Louisiana published a 142 page long official annual for the Fort Lewis District. Also in 1937 Fort George Wright published an annual followed by another for 1938-1939. All three books listed the CCC enrollees and staff for their camps with photos including a short summary of their work with photos. CCC historian Robert W. "Bob" Audretsch combed through the three annuals to compile this list of 10,168 enrollee names. Altogether this new compilation contains 4,805 enrollee names from Washington camps, 5,047 in Idaho camps and 316 in one Montana camp.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BETWEEN 1933 and 1942, nearly 200,000 young African-Americans participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's most successful New Deal agencies. In an effort to correct the lack of historical attention paid to the African-American contribution to the CCC, Olen Cole, Jr., examines their participation in the Corps as well as its impact on them. Though federal legislation establishing the CCC held that no bias of "race, color, or creed" was to be tolerated, Cole demonstrates that the very presence of African-Americans in the CCC, as well as the placement of the segregated CCC work camps in predominantly white California communities, became significant sources of controversy. Cole assesses community resistance to all-black camps, as well as the conditions of the state park camps, national forest camps, and national park camps where African-American work companies in California were stationed. He also evaluates the educational and recreational experiences of African-American CCC participants, their efforts to combat racism, and their contributions to the protection and maintenance of California's national forests and parks. Perhaps most important, Cole's use of oral histories gives voice to individual experiences: former Corps members discuss the benefits of employment, vocational training, and character development as well as their experiences of community reaction to all-black CCC camps. An important and much neglected chapter in American history, Cole's study should interest students of New Deal politics, state and national park history, and the African-American experience in the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION They came from all over America—from the big cities, from the small towns, from the farms—tens of thousands of young men, to serve in the vanguard of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal in the spring of 1933. They were the young men of the Civilian Conservation Corps. They opted for long days and hard, dirty work, living in quasi-military camps often far from home in the nation's publicly owned forests and parks. But they earned money to send back to their needy families, received three square meals a day, and escaped from idle purposelessness by contributing to the renewal and beautification of the country. By the time the CCC program ended as the nation was entering World War II, more than 2.5 million men had served in more than 4,500 camps across the country. The men had planted over 3 billion trees, combated soil erosion and forest fires, and occasionally dealt with natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and droughts. Roosevelt asked Congress to create a civilian conservation corps to be used in forestry, the prevention of soil erosion, flood control, and similar projects. Thus, just seventeen days after taking office, Roosevelt's New Deal had launched the mobilization of the largest peacetime labor army in American history--helping to save not only the nation's long-neglected natural resources, but also its vastly underemployed youth. In the Shadow of the Mountain recounts the story of Edwin G. Hill, a typical recruit who spent “the most enjoyable and rewarding years” of his life in the Civilian Conservation Corps--the “We can take it” boys.
