A few of the more far-sighted persons in the community thought the contest might last twelve or eighteen months, but none were bold enough to hazard the conjecture that it would be prolonged through four eventful years. The dis tinguished Secretary of State, Mr. Seward, confidently promised the extinction of the rebellion in sixty days. But as month after month and year after year elapsed, and the scene of warlike Operations extended over a constantly widening area, with an ever-increasing earnestness in the two sections of the country arrayed against each other, it became apparent that not one volume, nor even two, would suffice for a complete history of the war. Happily, the end came at last, and though not altogether unexpected by those who knew the actual exhaustion of the South, with a suddenness almost as startling - so accustomed had the public mind become to a state of war - as the first burst of hostilities in the bombardment of Fort Sumter. When the makers of history ceased, the writers of it began to see a termination of their labors, and only then could the publishers set limits to the extent of the. Work. I told him I thought it gave him the hydrophobia, at least he died afterwards. I was badly wounded, in my new hat, in a fight near Som erville, Tenn., Christmas week of 1863. A new hat was a rarity to a Confederate soldier in those times. In writing to me a Yankee who was in the fight wanted to know why I did not pick up another, as there were plenty lying around when they left there. On the 17th of January, 1861, I was passing through the last named state on my way to Mi Hedgeville, Georgia. The southern heart was fast catching fire, and there were plenty of hot-heads to apply the kindling torch in North Carolina. Georgia had just passed her secession ordinance, and the half-grown, tar-heel boys were shouting for the side which promised relief from the dreary monotony of their lives. At every cross roads, and at every railway station, you were pretty sure to see two or three young men with the blue and white cockade (at that early day the emblem of treason) in their hats. Most of the old men on the train looked grave and troubled, but kept quiet. Ex-Governor Moorhead, however, a frank, plain-spoken old patriot, who had not long before quitted the gubernatorial chair of North Carolina, left no one in doubt as to what his sentiments were. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incidents of the Civil War in America The Joan of Arc of Camp Dick Robinson. - A young lady who has been with the East Tennesseeans during their stay at Camp Dick Robinson, is thus alluded to by the camp correspondent of the Cincinnati Times: "One of the features of the 1st Tennessee Regiment is .the person of a brave and accomplished young lady of but eighteen summers, and of prepossessing appearance, named Sarah Taylor, of East Tennessee, who is the step-daughter of Captain Dowden, of the 1st Tennessee Regiment. Miss Taylor is an exile from her home, having joined the fortunes of her step-father and her wandering companions, accompanying them in their perilous and dreary flight from their homes and estates. Miss Taylor has formed the determination to share with her late companions the dangers and fatigues of a military campaign. She has donned a neat blue chapeau, beneath which her long hair is fantastically arranged; bearing at her side a highly-finished regulation sword, and silver-mounted pistols in her belt, all of which gives her a very neat appearance. She is quite the idol of the Tennessee boys. They look upon her as a second Joan of Arc, believing that victory and glory will perch upon the standards borne in the ranks favored by her loved presence. Miss Captain Taylor is all courage and skill. Having become an adept in the sword exercise, and a sure shot with the pistol, she is determined to lead in the van of the march bearing her exiled and oppressed countrymen back to their homes, or, if failing, to offer up her own life's blood in the sacrifice." A gentleman who was on the ground on Saturday night, the 19th instant, when the order was issued to the Tennesseeans to march to reinforce Colonel Garrard, informs us that the wildest excitement pervaded the whole camp, and that the young lady above alluded to mounted her horse, and. cap in hand, galloped along the line like a spirit of flame, cheering on the men. She wore a blue blouse, and was armed with pistols, sword, and rifle. Our informant, who has been at the camp the whole time since the arrival of the Tennesseeans, says that Miss Taylor is regarded by the troops as a guardian angel, who is to lead them to victory. But'it was in no sense an authoritative body. It was composed of delegates from the several Colonial Assemblies, with three exceptions, who acted under special instructions. They set forth a Declaration of R1ghts and Grievances; they petitioned the King, and sent memorials to Parliament. But they only claimed all the privileges of Englishmen as their birthright, and therefore, protested against being taxed by'a body in which they were not represented. _their doings were warmly approved by the Assemblies and the people of all the colonies, and the first step was unconsciously taken toward the political union, the separate national existence, of the English race in America. The lapse of nine years, passed in the endurance of a common oppression from their common mother, and m continuous consultation as to their means of resistance, developed _rapidly a unity of feeling 1n the colo nies, which took form ia the Continental Congress, composed of leading men from twelve provinces, -which assembled 1n Philadelphia.
