Book Yugoslavia and Its Historians

Download or read book Yugoslavia and Its Historians written by Norman M. Naimark and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-19 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of what has been written about the recent history of Yugoslavia and the fierce wars that have plagued that country has been produced by journalists, political analysts, diplomats, human rights organization, the United Nations, and other government and intergovernmental organizations. Professional historians of Yugoslavia, however, have been strangely silent about the wars and the breakup of the country. This book is an effort to end that silence. The goal of this volume is to bring together insights from a distinguished group of American and European scholars of Yugoslavia to add depth to our historical understanding of that country’s recent struggles. The first part of the volume examines the ways in which images of the Yugoslav past have shaped current understandings of the region. The second part deals more directly with the events of the recent past and also looks forward to some of the problems and future prospects for Yugoslavia’s successor states.

Book Civil War in Bosnia 1992 94

Download or read book Civil War in Bosnia 1992 94 written by Edgar O'Ballance and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim President of Bosnia battled for almost two years in a 'war the West could not stop', against Serb and Croat separatism, to preserve its entity, saving its sovereignty, but losing half his territory. Western rivalries and changes of policy, endless negotiations, broken promises and cease-fires, and ethnic cleansing on a barbaric scale, with the appearance of concentration camps and atrocities, were the hallmarks of the conflict, of seige, bombardment and starvation, with semi-independent war-loards confiscating a proportion of UN and other food aid for themselves. Rival American and Russian initiatives in March 1994, brought about a cease-fire in Sarajevo, which had been constantly under the television spotlight while being bombarded for almost two years, which it was hoped would spread to other parts of Bosnia in media darkness. Ethnic forward battle lines may become new frontiers.

Book excerpt: “Vigorous, passionate, humane, and extremely readable. . . For an account of what has actually happened. . . Glenny’s book so far stands unparalleled.”—The New Republic The fall of Yugoslavia tells the whole, true story of the Balkan Crisis—and the ensuing war—for those around the world who have watched the battle unfold with a mixture of horror, dread, and confusion. When Croatia and Slovenia declared their independence in June 1991, peaceful neighbors of four decades took up arms against each other once again and a savage war flared in the Balkans. The underlying causes go back to business left unfinished by both the Second and First World Wars. In this acclaimed book, now revised and updated with a new chapter on the Dayton Accords and the subsequent U.S. involvement, Misha Glenny offers a sobering eyewitness chronicle of the events that rekindled the violent conflict, a lucid and impartial analysis of the politics behind them, and incisive portraits of the main personalities involved. Above all, he shows us the human realities behind the headlines, and puts in its true, historical context one of the most ferocious civil wars of our time.

Book The Yugoslav Example

Download or read book The Yugoslav Example written by Bettina Gruber and published by Waxmann Verlag. This book was released on 2014 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'Yugoslav Wars' (or, often, 'the Balkan conflict') refers to a series of wars in the region of former Yugoslavia, which were associated with the break-up of that state. The Yugoslav Wars resulted in an unimaginable number of dead, injured and displaced people. They also had a devastating impact on the economy and on the environment. Most notably, in some of the states which emerged from the conflict, people still to this day cannot peacefully coexist with one another. Beyond the affected region itself, the military conflict also had significant implications for Europe and its member states. It destroyed the illusion that Europe had overcome war. Perhaps these recent wars have given Europe an impetus to draw lessons from them, to find out what really needs to be done to build a peaceful Europe. A particular characteristic of this publication is that it does not settle for a single precise analysis of the reasons for war and for post-war conflicts. Rather, peace efforts and peace treaties are analyzed by focusing on their function of preventing conflicts or reducing their extent. Emphasis is placed on the efforts of national actors as well as on those of actors in civil society to promote peace policies in the international sphere. This collection of articles might, for the first time, clearly display the political challenges of peace in the context of the collapse of Yugoslavia and its subsequent wars. It certainly seeks to illustrate what has been learned and what still needs to be learned for the future.

Book American Intervention in Yugoslavia

Download or read book American Intervention in Yugoslavia written by Robert H. Whealey and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this in-depth analysis of America's role in the Yugoslavian civil war, Prof. Robert H. Whealey persuasively argues that the intervention by the U. S. and the Great Powers in this regional conflict actually expanded the war rather than curtailed it. Contradicting public perceptions of the war, Whealey advances several points of contention based on a thorough review of the evidence. First, the American public and its leaders knew too little about the history of Yugoslavia before intervening in its politics; as a result, America's proposed solutions were often uninformed and misguided. Second, the American media coverage of the war was too superficial. For example, the widespread use of the term ethnic cleansing by both media and government created a type of Western propaganda about the war, in which Serbs were compared with Nazis. In fact, all sides committed atrocities. Another factor in U.S. Balkan policy was the decline in respect in the United States for international law, coupled with a resort to American military interventionism as a tool of advancing American interests. In this respect, Whealey criticizes the increasing role of the president in making foreign policy, which has led to the abuse of American power, not only in the case of President Clinton in Yugoslavia but also in the case of the current President George W. Bush in Iraq. He also points out that the U.S. government and media largely underestimated the influence of religion on the Balkan conflict as well as the influence of religious attitudes at home in forming judgments about the internecine strife in Yugoslavia. Finally, Whealey emphasizes that whatever American motives, in countries subject to Americaninterventionism (e.g., Yugoslavia and Iraq) military intervention is often viewed not as liberation but as imperialism. This provocative study throws much new light on a still largely misunderstood trouble spot of eastern Europe and calls into question a good deal of current U.S. foreign policy.
