Book excerpt: Amanda Patterson Trim (1843-1919) was the daughter of Jesse Patterson and Cyrena Maynard of Hillsdale Co., Michigan. Her parents were born in Pennsylvania and New York, respectively and were early pioneers of Hillsdale Co. Later, they were living in Vermontville Twp., Eaton Co. when they died. She married Homer Trim in 1861. Homer (1836- 1864) was the son of Hiram Trim and Patience Ure of Oswego Co., NY and Michigan Territory. He purchased farmland in Sunfield Twp., a few miles from her parents' home. They were the parents of only only one child, a daughter named Ella Jane (b.1863) who later married a Wells. Homer enlisted in Company E, 6th Michigan Cavalry and had died within seven and one-half months. Amanda never remarried and lived with her daughter until her death. Includes letters received from Schuyler Patterson, her brother; Mortimer Trim, Homer's younger brother and her husband, Homer.

Book excerpt: Five letters written by Capt. Thomas H. Head to wife Saphronia (Glenwood, IA) while encamped at Rolla, Missouri (Dates: Nov. 9, Dec. 16 & 26, 1861; and Jan. 6 and 12, 1862). The letters include comments on condition of the troops and casualties, raids of rebel supplies and equipment, the Battle of Salem, and other fighting between Rolla and St. Louis. Letter of December 27, 1861 mentions an attempt on the life of his orderly sergeant by three members of Company A (DeLionel Haynes/Haines, John Woodworth and Benjamin Tabor) that resulted in injury of his company's drummer. Capt. Head--along with drummer Benjamin O. Sheldon--intervened in the incident and was almost shot himself in an attempt to disarm one of the assailants. The same letter also comments on the incident in which Gen. Grenville M. Dodge's pistol accidentally discharged, wounding him in the leg. There is also brief mention of wives visiting their husbands in camp. Accompanying the five letters of Thomas Head are two letters written to Saphronia from brothers who were members of Company D of the 1st Iowa Cavalry. Perry Crosswait wrote his sister from Camp Warren (Burlington, IA) on August 21, 1861, and William H. Crosswait wrote to Saphronia on September 1, 1863 from Little Rock, AR. William's letter includes comments on the capture of Little Rock.
