Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government of the United States and South Dakota Mair, Pastor of the Congregational Church of Mitchell, formerly Superintendent of Schools of Minnehaha County, and to Senator Thomas Sterling, formerly Dean of the School of Law of our State University at Vermillion, each of whom read the manuscript and made valuable suggestions for bringing the work to its present state of completion. Special thanks are due Senator Sterling who has known the author from boyhood and who has taken an unusual interest in the work. Many pages of carefully written criticisms were furnished, cit ing the author to errors of fact, ambiguities, repeti tions, incompleteness of detail, and inaccurate use of technical terms. Except for these criticisms many serious errors would have been overlooked, for there is no other person within the acquaintance of the author who has had that wide experience as lawyer, legislator, practical politician, orator, teacher, member of two constitutional conventions, and literary critic which so completely equips Sen ator Sterling for the task. Book The Government of North Dakota Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Government of North Dakota Classic Reprint written by James E. Boyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of North Dakota This book deals with the government of both the Nation and the State. There are already many good books dealing with civil government, and a few excellent ones. Yet the author feels justified in adding one more book to the list. This work differs in two important particulars, from the usual text book in civil government. In the first place this is not a formal treatment of the dry bones of the subject, on the one hand, nor is it, on the other hand, a work on elementary sociology. Both extremes are carefully avoided. Civil gov ernment is presented, however, with proper emphasis on the political and sociological bearings of government. In the second place, the Federal principle of our government is given great prominence in the treatment of the framework of Federal and State government. The two constitutions, Federal and State, are studied together, in parallel column. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Civil Government for North Dakota 1897 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Civil Government for North Dakota 1897 Classic Reprint written by Almond Leroy Woods and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government for North Dakota, 1897 Not that there are not enough civil governments already before the student world, is this book pub lished, but because, since the legislature in 1895 made it compulsory to teach civil government in the common schools of the state, there has been a con stant call on the part of the teachers for some book that would deal minutely with the civil government of North Dakota. The outlines from which this book was developed were used by the author and other instructors in the institutes of 1895, and there seemed to meet with the approval of the teachers. The book is not intended as a philosophical study of the subject of political economy, but deals rather with the facts of government as the pupils find them. For North Dakota pupils, North Dakota gov ernment is best suited. Children grasp the concrete sooner than the abstract; therefore the greater part of the book has been devoted to the concrete treat ment of the forms of government directly about them. Enough space has been given to the national government to encourage the older pupils to con tinne the study of our national institutions. If this book in any way stimulates the interest already taken in the study of civil government in our common schools, the author will be satisfied. In placing this volume before the public we wish to acknowledge our obligations to C. E. Jackson, super intendent of schools of Pembina county, and W. L. Stockwell, superintendent of schools of Grafton City, who have kindly looked through most of the manuscript and made valuable suggestions which have been incorporated. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil Government Describing the Various Forms of Government-Local, State, and National-and Discussing the Government of the United States From an Historical Stand-Point Men seek after liberty, and find it only in being well governed. The highest liberty, therefore, is in the best government: a government wisely planned and faithfully administered. The people of the United States when ordaining and establishing the Constitution were actuated by a desire to secure to themselves and their posterity the blessings of liberty. We are now enjoying in a large measure the civil and religious freedom which our system of government is so happily adapted to secure. Whether these will be enjoyed by our posterity will depend largely upon what shall be done to qualify the rising generation of American youth for the duties and responsibilities of freemen. In a system of government like ours, where the popular will is paramount and sovereign, and where by virtue of the system itself every male citizen enjoys the privilege of suffrage, each individual is confronted with grave responsibilities. Political privilege begets political responsibility, and a citizen who enjoys the one must assume the other, or, in his capacity as a citizen, be unpardonably delinquent. In a very few years the destinies of the republic will be committed to those who are now receiving instruction in the schools. How important, then, that the course of instruction should embrace the study of Civil Government. In theory ours is a government of the people; and that it may be such in fact, the people must know how to govern.
