This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon on the Divine Origin of Civil Government, and the Sinfulness of Rebellion: Delivered in the Ebenezer Methodist Episcopal Church, Sabbath, June 30, 1861 Romans, xiii. 1-4. Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whoso ever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God, and they that resist, shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then be afraid of the power? Do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same - For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain for he is the minister of God, a revenger, to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Among the many evidences of the inspiration of the Bible, there is no one more significant than the fact, that considered as a code of law it is of universal application. While all systems of human jurisprudence apply only to certain localities, the Bible system is adapted alike to every clime and nation. The laws of men define the duties of certain classes of citizens, but the Divine law details the obligations belonging to every relation in life. The parent and child - the husband and wife - the buyer and seller the ruler and the subject, all have their duties defined and their obligations set forth. As a minister is the teacher of the people, on all matters of religious duty, his position requires that he should explain and enforce the duties which God has imposed upon men. This is especially the case, when peculiar circumstances direct public at tention with more than ordinary interest to any particular depart ment of religious obligation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duty of the Citizen in These Times: A Sermon Preached in the Church of the Holy Innocents, Albany, Sunday Morning, April 21, 1861 "Suhmit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake." 1 St. Peter, ii, 13. The injunctions upon the civil duties of Christian citizens, which occur in the Epistle appointed for this Sunday, will have struck your minds as very seasonable. The Apostle addressing himself to the scattered people of God, in regard, of course, mainly to the great truths of the Gospel, and the great requirements of faith and obedience, takes occasion also, to speak to them of the necessity and the duty of so conducting themselves among the unbelievers who surrounded them, as to give no cause of offence. Book The Divine Right of the American Government

Download or read book The Divine Right of the American Government written by G. D. Carrow and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Divine Right of the American Government: A Sermon Delivered in Wharton Street Methodist Episcopal Church, Sabbath, May 11, 1861 Isaiah 1st chap. 2d v. - "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken: I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me." The history of the Jewish people, as contained in the Old Testament, furnishes very many and very striking illustrations of the great truth that Divine Providence interferes with the affairs of individuals and nations. Indeed, the historical books of the Old Testament are literally crowded with the facts of Providential oversight and interposition. The chief purpose of God, in his special dealings toward that people, was to make them the Depository of true religion, first, for their own advantage, and ultimately for the enlightenment and salvation of the whole human race. It was in accordance with this purpose, that they received favors innumerable and incomparable, justifying the grateful boast of their royal Bard and Prophet when he exclaimed, "He hath not dealt so with any nation, and as for his judgments, they have not known them." In the text, the Prophet appeals to this distinguishing care of the Infinite Providence in his loftiest strain: "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord hath spoken; I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me." In this sublime appeal, the Prophet intimates what Jesus, long centuries afterwards, expressly declared in these words: "Where much is given, much will also be required." At present, there are no inspired men to announce the purposes of God, as did the Hebrew Prophets, or to record the facts of His providence, as did the Old Testament historians. But it requires not the eye of immediate inspiration to see and record that the care of Divine Providence, in a marked, pre-eminent degree, has been exercised over this nation, from the birth of its first child, to that of the last of its thirty millions of people. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Responsibility of the Citizen and the Nation in Respect to the Fugitive Slave Bill: A Discourse Delivered April 10, 1851, on Occasion of the Public Fast, in the Orthodox Congregational Church, Townsend, Mass This is called a Christian land. We are called a Christian people. If there be any significance or truth in this epithet, it must lie in the fact that we hold ourselves amenable to a right cous God as our Sovereign; that we regard his revealed will as our supreme rule of duty that the great and eternal principles of rectitude inculcated by Jesus Christ, in connection with the express commands of Jehovah, are made the foundation of our social, civil, and religious blessings; and that the binding authority of these can never be destroyed. It inheres in their very nature. It is their unchanging equity. And it is this principle that gives power to civil enactments; that renders them obligatory upon the con science, and creates the moral duty of obedience. Book The Duty of Sustaining the Government

Download or read book The Duty of Sustaining the Government written by I. N. Sprague and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duty of Sustaining the Government: A Sermon Preached in the Presbyterian Church at Caldwell, N. Y., On Sunday, May 19, 1861 Let every soul be Bubject unto the higher powers; for there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." - Romans xiii: 1. I have chosen this passage as my text, that I might call your attention to a sermon on the subject of the present stirring times. Never, since the days of the Revolution, have the pulpits of our land sounded out with such clear notes of patriotism, without any reference to party politics, as within a few weeks past. Nor has this outspoken patriotism been confined to the limits of any sect or denomination in religion, nor to any shade of party in politics. The pulpits of the entire North have uttered but one sound, and that has been clear and unmistakable, urging upon all to sustain the Government and Constitution and Laws, as the paramount duty of the times. I would not be behind my brethren in the ministry in my love and zeal for my Country, or in my willingness to use my sacred office in all appropriate efforts to sustain law and order in opposition to misrule and rebellion. And I am happy that I can do so on this occasion, without meddling at all with the peculiar sentiments and doctrines of any political party. What I have to say will and must, I think, commend itself to the judgment and conscience of every one who loves his country, and who wishes to retain and enjoy the blessings of an orderly government and a peaceful home. Within a few months past, God has been rolling up mighty events in our country. The most peace-loving nation on earth? we are suddenly convulsed with revolutions and wars. From the highest state of security, we are suddenly thrown into the deepest peril. The quiet pursuits of industry are laid aside and the nation is rushing to arms. Book Obedience to Human Law Considered in the Light of Divine Truth

Download or read book Obedience to Human Law Considered in the Light of Divine Truth written by John G. Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Obedience to Human Law Considered in the Light of Divine Truth: A Discourse, Delivered in the First Baptist Meeting House, Lawrence, Mass;, July 4, 1852 This is the Lords Day. "It is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." We embrace it as the occasion in which is celebrated the triumphs of Jesus over the tomb, in which was completed the work of Redemption on earth, the sign of the blessings of the Gospel to sinful men. But this day is not only the Christian Sabbath, it is likewise by the date of this year a National Sabbath-day. It is the Fourth of July, in the seventy-sixth year of the Independence of the United States of America, the birth day of our country, the day loved by every American heart. Though it is in the popular phrase the glorious fourth, I have no oration to pronounce, I have no speech portraying the glories of our Republic. I come not to you under the sound of the booming cannon, I take not the platform where I am to be greeted with cheers from an excited multitude. I have no cheers to receive, I ask for none, but I solicit listening ears, serious countenances, devotional hearts and thoughtful minds. I would preach the gospel this day, and being the anniversary of our Independence, I am moved to proclaim the gospel in one aspect of its relation to the interests of this nation. In obedience to authority, both civil and ecclesiastical, 0 keep this day as a day of national fasting-a day of humiliation before God. It is proclaimed by authority to be kept holy as a solemn fast. Book The History of Guilford Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Guilford Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Ralph Dunning Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Guilford, Connecticut Among the manuscripts left by the late Ralph D. Smith Esq., who had devoted his leisure hours during the last forty years of his life to the study of historical and genealogical subjects, was found an outline sketch of the history of Guilford, written some thirty years ago and doubtless laid aside with the hope of resuming his labors upon it when more abundant materials should have been collected for the purpose. The history of the early settlers of the town was a favorite subject of study. Although not a native, he showed an attachment to it fully equal to that ever shown by any one to the place of his birth. He was thoroughly acquainted with its records and keenly alive to everything that would add to its reputation. Had this historical sketch been filled up and completed by his own hands, it would have undoubtedly compared favorably, in accuracy and completeness, with the history of any town heretofore written. Still it seemed proper to save what he had prepared, even in its incomplete form, as something of great value to the student of local history, and as a foundation upon which future laborers might build a more complete and exhaustive history.
