Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Part 1 of this book, Dr. Schoenhals places the Grenadian Revolution and its aftermath in historical perspective. He explores the Anglo-French rivalry over the island, the period of slavery, and the British colonial administration and gives particular emphasis to the Gairy decades (1951-1979). His discussion of the People's Revolutionary Government is based on extensive Interviews with the leadership of the New Jewel Movement, foreign diplomats, and Grenadian citizens, and on a review of documents captured by the United States during occupation of the island. In Part 2, Dr. Melanson, after briefly reviewing the nature of U.S. interests In the region and U.S.-Caribbean relations during the Nixon years, focuses on the Carter and Reagan administrations' policies in the Caribbean and relations with the Grenadian government. He examines the justification offered by President Reagan for the 1983 intervention, domestic responses to the action in the United States, and its implications for Reagan's Central American policies. Finally, he considers whether the action will prove to be a prelude to a new domestic consensus about the use of U.S. military power in the Third World.

Download or read book Grenada written by Fitzroy Ambursley and published by Latin America Bureau (Lab). This book was released on 1984 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US invasion of Grenada in October 1983 was a flagrant and direct violation of international law. The Reagan government's determination to suppress the Grenadian people's right to sovereignty and the shallowness of its justification for this position indicate a preparedness to escalate further violence with which its mandate is imposed in the Caribbean and Central America. Grenada threatened the US because it remained stubbornly independent and sought to develop its tiny society on its own terms. The tragic collapse of the government of teh New Jewel Movement simply provided the pretext for an invasion that had been prepared and rehearsed long before. Grenada: Whose Freedom? gives the background to and outlines the substantial advances of the 1979 'Peaceful Revolution' and shows why it was repugnanat to both Washington and the Thatcher government. It discusses the debate inside the New Jewel Movement, the fall of Maurice Bishop and the events surrounding the invasion itself.

Book excerpt: Red Calypso tells the story of Grenada's fall to Marxist tyranny and the United States' rescue of the island from a violent and fanatical government. When Maurice Bishop took over the government of Grenada establishing a one-party state on Leninist principles, he did not know that he would one day fall victim to his own machinery. The terror, corruption, and absurdity of Bishop's regime have never been described so vividly as in this eye-witness account which analyses the brief experiment in Grenadian communism and the American invasion which ended it.

Book Survival for Service

Download or read book Survival for Service written by Sir Paul Scoon and published by MacMillan. This book was released on 2003 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978 when Sir Paul Scoon was appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to become the second Governor General of the small, peaceful and independent island of Grenada, there were few people outside the Caribbean who knew much more about the country and its 100,000 inhabitants than as a tourist destination and a major producer of nutmeg, mace and spices. No one could have foreseen that by the time Sir Paul Scoon resigned, he would have worked alongside six Heads of Governments and established an Interim Government in a lead up to elections. Nor could anyone have envisioned that this flourishing democracy with its growing economy would endure a coup d`etat; rule by a Revolutionary Military Council; the death in office of a serving Prime Minister; the execution of a former Prime Minister and 17 of his political supporters and the intervention of the United States under President Ronald Reagan into Grenada`s affairs which brought the region to its most dangerous confrontation since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Two decades have passed since the American forces stormed Grenada`s beaches and guarded the Governor General`s Houses while he and his wife lay on the floor to avoid the hostile fire from members of the Grenadian Army rebels. This was a period of great danger, which Sir Paul Scoon recounts vividly in this story of a life dominated by service to his country and personal survival.

Book Revolution and Rescue in Grenada

Download or read book Revolution and Rescue in Grenada written by Reynold Burrowes and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-03-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Burrowes book is well written and provides a balanced if familiar assessment of events. He finds fault in the East-West perspective of U.S. foreign policy in the Third World, but his call for greater assertiveness by regional groupings to control their own affairs is wishful thinking, given the divisions exhibited in this case. Choice Why were so many of America's staunch allies as well as many Congressmen and opinion leaders opposed to the joint invasion of Grenada by the United States and the Caribbean neighbors of that tiny island-nation? What led to the Grenadian government crisis of 1983, and--above all--was the threat perceived by the Reagan administration real? These and related issues are explored in Reynold Burrowes' comprehensive account of the Grenada affair, a chapter in modern diplomacy and warfare that remains an enigma to many observers.

  • Pages : 290 pages

Download or read book The Grenada Invasion written by Robert J. Beck and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Beck's study focuses principally on two related questions. First, how did the Reagan administration decide to launch the invasion of Grenada? And second, what role did international law play in that decision? The Grenada Invasion draws on extensive interviews and correspondence with key participants - and on the recently published memoirs of those who participated in or witnessed the administration's deliberations - in order to render a new and more complete picture of Operation "Urgent Fury" decisionmaking. Beck concludes that international law did not determine policy but that it acted briefly as a restraint and then as a justification for action.
