Book excerpt: Wang presents the status quo of curriculum development in professional interpreting programmes in China and points to the urgency to devise a curriculum improvement model to ensure the relevance of such programmes against a changing reality. She covers the European experience in interpreter education that China can learn from and discusses opportunities arising from previous examples for China to iterate upon in the context of the broader and more diverse professional reality. The book puts the nature of professional interpreters and, in turn, interpreting programmes, under the concurring lens of curriculum studies and the sociology of professions. Wang identifies eight stakeholders which call for changes in interpreting programmes, and six categories of competence (or sub-competence) which see a progression from undergraduate to graduate and lifelong-learning stage. These serve as curriculum goals and encapsulate the recommended changes in institutional curricula. The conceptualised model is then described with a case study on Chinese-English retour training to show its applicability and relevance in interpreting programmes on the ground. The socialization of knowledge production, along with the development of interand transdisciplinary research groupings within traditionally discipline-based teaching institutions is equally increasing, even to the extent, that new terminology is coined to better specify this cross-sector collaboration. One of these new concepts which have emerged within the framework of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity is heterogenic cooperation. This concept describes the bringing together of knowledge from different sources and can be observed mainly when specialists are dependent on skills and knowledge which do not exist within the framework of their own scientific domain. The ultimate result of heterogenic cooperation will enlarge any cooperation by integrating partners from different domains, fostering collaboration in a common project with a homogeneous result. For large-scale cross-cultural surveys source questionnaires need to be translated into multiple target languages in order to produce comparable data across participating countries and cultures. ‘Advance translations’ have been applied in such surveys to improve the translatability of source questionnaires. The author used a think-aloud study to test the usefulness of advance translation into French and German. The study involved experienced professional questionnaire translators and applied qualitative and quantitative analysis. The study confirmed the usefulness of advance translation, at least for the languages and source texts used.
