Además, esta propuesta también promueve el uso de medios de transporte sostenibles como la bicicleta y el transporte público, lo que puede ayudar a reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y mejorar la calidad del aire. La pandemia del COVID-19 ha acelerado el interés en este concepto de ciudades de 15 minutos, ya que muchas personas han optado por caminar o andar en bicicleta en lugar de usar el transporte público para evitar posibles contagios. Al reducir la necesidad de desplazarse largas distancias para realizar actividades diarias, las ciudades de 15 minutos pueden ser también una forma de fomentar la actividad física y mejorar la salud de los residentes. Grandes ciudades como París, Copenhague y Melbourne ya han adoptado este concepto en su planificación urbana, y se espera que muchas más ciudades lo implementen en el futuro para hacer frente a los nuevos desafíos ambientales y de calidad de vida. El concepto de "ciudades de 15 minutos" no sólo se trata de una propuesta atractiva desde el punto de vista ambiental, sino que también puede tener importantes beneficios económicos y sociales para las comunidades urbanas. Al reducir la necesidad de desplazarse en automóvil, las personas pueden ahorrar en costos de combustible, mantenimiento y estacionamiento, lo que se traduce en un aumento de la renta disponible, de la capacidad de gasto y también en una reducción de la pobreza energética. En términos de diseño urbanístico, la planificación de ciudades de 15 minutos puede llevar a una mayor densidad de población y a la creación de espacios públicos más verdes y amigables para los peatones y ciclistas. Esto puede aumentar la calidad de vida y mejorar la salud y el bienestar de los residentes al reducir la contaminación acústica y atmosférica, promoviendo estilos de vida más activos y saludables. El concepto de ciudades de 15 minutos es una propuesta apasionante y prometedora que puede mejorar significativamente la calidad de vida de las personas y la sostenibilidad ambiental en las áreas urbanas. Con la planificación adecuada y el compromiso de los actores públicos y privados, puede convertirse en una inminente realidad en muchas ciudades del mundo.
