Book Water Markets for the 21st Century

Download or read book Water Markets for the 21st Century written by K. William Easter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the history, the present and the future of water markets on 5 continents, beginning with the institutional underpinnings of water markets and factors influencing transaction costs. The book examines markets in seven countries and three different U.S. states, ranging from village-level water markets in Oman to basin wide formal water markets in Australia's Murray-Darling River basin. Introductory chapters on the background of water markets and on transaction costs and policy design are followed by chapter length discussion of water markets as an adaptive response to climate change and of supply reliability in a changing climate. Case studies describe a variety of facets of the design and function of markets around the world: California, Chile, Spain, Oman, Australia, Canada, India and China. In analyzing these real-world examples of markets, the contributors explore water rights and trading of rights between agricultural and urban sectors and the principles and function of option markets. They discuss different sized approaches, from large scale, ministry-level administration of markets to informal arrangements among farmers in the same village, or groups of villages which allocate water without large investment in management and infrastructure. Discussion includes questions of why water market practices have not expanded more rapidly in arid places. The book discusses mechanisms for resolving conflicts between water rights holders as well as between water right holders and third parties impacted by water trades and whether or not public ownership of water rights or use rights should trump private ownership and under what condition. Also covered are new and expanding categories of water use, beyond human consumption, agriculture and industry to new technologies ranging from extracting natural gas from shale to producing biofuels. The book concludes with suggestions for future water markets and offers a realistic picture of how they might change water use and distribution practices going forward.

Book excerpt: Dr. Kristy Custer and Dr. Michael Russell co-wrote Gaming Concepts because they saw a way to take something that students loved and turn it into an educational opportunity that would both motivate and engage both high-level achievers and apathetic learners. In addition, both authors repeatedly asked the question, "Who is teaching these kids how to be safe while playing these games? And, who is teaching these kids what is and what is not appropriate while gaming?" They saw a need to provide structure in the gaming community, especially to young gamers who were modeling, not always appropriately, what the more mature gamers were doing.Gaming Concepts was written as a turn-key curriculum that almost anyone with even rudimentary computer skills could teach. Mike, an experienced gamer; and Kristy, an experienced curriculum writer; make a unique and effective team as each draws on the strength of the other. While Mike provided the technical expertise, Kristy made sure that the gamer jargon was put into educationese for even the most inexperienced gaming teacher to understand. Together, they hope that Gaming Concepts will motivate other schools to take the leap into using video gaming as a powerful catalyst for learning.

Book Introducing Urban Anthropology

Download or read book Introducing Urban Anthropology written by Rivke Jaffe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the important and growing field of urban anthropology. This is an increasingly critical area of study, as more than half of the world's population now lives in cities and anthropological research is increasingly done in an urban context. Exploring contemporary anthropological approaches to the urban, the authors consider: How can we define urban anthropology? What are the main themes of twenty-first century urban anthropological research? What are the possible future directions in the field? The chapters cover topics such as urban mobilities, place-making and public space, production and consumption, politics and governance. These are illustrated by lively case studies drawn from a diverse range of urban settings in the global North and South. Accessible yet theoretically incisive, Introducing Urban Anthropology will be a valuable resource for anthropology students as well as of interest to those working in urban studies and related disciplines such as sociology and geography.

Book Picturing the Past

Download or read book Picturing the Past written by Jack Green and published by Oriental Institute Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully illustrated catalogue of essays, descriptions, and commentary accompanies the Oriental Institute special exhibit Picturing the Past: Imaging and Imagining the Ancient Middle East (on exhibit February 7 through September 2, 2012). Picturing the Past presents paintings, architectural reconstructions, facsimiles, models, photographs, and computer-aided reconstructions that show how the architecture, sites, and artifacts of the ancient Middle East have been documented. It also examines how the publication of those images have shaped our perception of the ancient world, and how some of the more "imaginary" reconstructions have obscured our real understanding of the past. The exhibit and catalog also show how features of the ancient Middle East have been presented in different ways for different audiences, in some cases transforming a highly academic image into a widely recognized icon of the past.
