Book City Rural KIDS COUNT Data Book KIDS COUNT Special Report

Download or read book City Rural KIDS COUNT Data Book KIDS COUNT Special Report written by Annie E. Casey Foundation, Baltimore, MD. and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication provides the objective data needed to track and monitor the well-being of children in different types of American communities. It is part of the ongoing work of the Casey Foundation -- advanced primarily through our KIDS COUNT initiative -- designed to give policymakers data that can help them better understand how conditions of families in their communities stack up against those in other communities across the country. Objective, scientific data provide the best foundation for informed debate and sound policy decisions. This special edition of the KIDS COUNT Data Book, was produced in an effort to elevate the understanding and awareness of conditions faced by children in the largest cities and in rural communities. By providing a consistent, reliable set of child well-being indicators, readers are invited to compare child outcomes for types of communities within their state or compare communities of similar types across states. These kinds of comparisons are provocative, and hopefully, they will lead to improved outcomes for kids and families regardless of where they live. Ultimately, disadvantaged kids in America would be better served by emphasizing the similarities in their plight, rather than stressing the differences. Appended are: (1) Rural Areas of States Ranked by Indicator; and (2) 50 Largest Cities Ranked by Indicator. Also included are: Definitions and Data Sources; and Primary Contacts for State KIDS COUNT Projects. [Data for this report compiled by Population Reference Bureau.].

Book Rural KIDS COUNT Pocket Guide Measures of Child Well Being in the Nation s Rural Areas

Download or read book Rural KIDS COUNT Pocket Guide Measures of Child Well Being in the Nation s Rural Areas written by Annie E. Casey Foundation, Baltimore, MD. and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "Pocket Guide" is derived from the "2004 KIDS COUNT Special Report: City & Rural KIDSCOUNT Data Book." It is designed to give state-level policymakers a better understanding of conditions faced by families in their rural communities and how they compare to those in the rural parts of other states, as well as the country as a whole. This special guide provides the kind of detailed, objective data needed to track and monitor the well-being of children in the rural areas of every state. The measures presented here provide information on the following: Poverty; Family structure; Parental employment; Housing affordability; and Education. The data show that too many children growing up in isolated rural communities, in every region of the country, do not have the supports they need to become successful workers, responsible parent, and engaged citizens. Addressing--and resolving--issues facing disadvantaged children and families requires a combination of know-how, political will, and tangible resources. [This "KIDS COUNT Pocket Guide" was produced for the Annie E. Casey Foundation by the Population Reference Bureau (PRB).].

Book KIDS COUNT Data Book 2006 State Profiles of Child Well Being Series

Download or read book KIDS COUNT Data Book 2006 State Profiles of Child Well Being Series written by Annie E. Casey Foundation, Baltimore, MD. and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This national and state-by-state study reports on the well-being of America's children and promotes discussion on ways to secure better futures for all kids. The Data Book ranks states on 10 key indicators and provides information on child health, education, and family economic conditions. This year, the Annie E. Casey Foundation also explores how early childhood development prepares children for success in school and life, and how to support family-based child care providers. This 17th annual KIDS COUNT Data Book essay looks at a critical component in the continuum of child-care options that millions of families, especially low-income families, use. It is a form of child care that is referred to herein as "family, friend, and neighbor care," which is offered in a home-based setting outside a child's own home, by both regulated and unregulated providers. It is also referred to as home-based and family-based care. It includes the many local caregivers who are paid to work with small groups of children in their homes and who do so as a business enterprise that contributes to the economic and social fabric of their communities. This report examines why family, friend, and neighbor care is so vital to the well-being of millions of kids and why we need to do much more to support and strengthen it. The report also illustrates a number of promising efforts across the country that are taking on this challenge in new and creative ways.

Book The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina

Download or read book The Faces of Poverty in North Carolina written by Gene R. Nichol and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 1.5 million North Carolinians today live in poverty. More than one in five are children. Behind these sobering statistics are the faces of our fellow citizens. This book tells their stories. Since 2012, Gene R. Nichol has traveled the length of North Carolina, conducting hundreds of interviews with poor people and those working to alleviate the worst of their circumstances. In an afterword to this new edition, Nichol draws on fresh data and interviews with those whose voices challenge all of us to see what is too often invisible, to look past partisan divides and preconceived notions, and to seek change. Only with a full commitment as a society, Nichol argues, will we succeed in truly ending poverty, which he calls our greatest challenge.
