He has produced numerous recordings, including Dub Ranting (1982), Rasta (1983), Us and Dem (1990), Back to Roots (1995), Belly of de Beast (1996) and Naked (2004). He was the first person to record with the Wailers after the death of Bob Marley, in a musical tribute to Nelson Mandela, which Mandela heard while in prison on Robben Island. Their later meetings led to Zephaniah working with children in South African townships and hosting the President's Two Nations Concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996. His first book of poems, Pen Rhythm, was produced in 1980 by a small East London publishing cooperative, Page One Books. His second collection, The Dread Affair, was published by Hutchinson's short-lived Arena imprint in 1985. He has since published three collections with Bloodaxe, City Psalms (1992), Propa Propaganda (1996) and Too Black Too Strong (2001), the latter including poems written while working with Michael Mansfield QC and other Tooks barristers on the Stephen Lawrence case. To Do Wid Me, filmed by Pamela Robertson-Pearce (Bloodaxe Books, 2013), includes a full-length feature film on DVD with all the poems performed on the film included in the book.

Clapp has arranged more than three thousand quotations—epigrams, epithets, verses, proverbs, scriptural references, witticisms, lyrics, literary references, and historical observations—on urban life from antiquity until the present. These quotes are drawn from the written and spoken words of more than one thousand writers throughout history. This volume, with contributions from speakers, poets, song writers, politicians philosophers, scientists, religious leaders, historians, social scientists, humorists, architects, journalists, and travelers from and to many lands is designed to be used by writers, speechmakers, students, and scholars on cities and urban life. Clapp’s text is striking for its sharp contrasts of urban and rural life and the urbanization process in different historical times and geographical areas. This second edition includes four hundred new entries, updated birth dates and occupations of quoted authors, and an expanded and updated introduction and preface. Clapp also added new introduction pages for each section containing pictures and unique quotations. The indexes have also been expanded to include more subjects and cities. The scope of this book is international, including entries on most major and many minor cities of the world. It is noteworthy for its pleasures as well as its insights.

Book City of God City of Satan

Download or read book City of God City of Satan written by Robert C. Linthicum and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the city a battleground of hostile principalities and powers? What is the mission of the church in the city? How can the church be supported in accomplishing that mission? These are the questions that Robert Linthicum treats in his comprehensive and probing biblical theology of the city. In the Bible the city is depicted both as a dwelling place of God and his people and as a center of power for Satan and his minions. The city is one primary stage on which the drama of salvation is played out. And that is no less the case at the end of this pivotal century as megacities become the focal point of most human activity and aspirations around the world. This is a timely theology of the city that weaves the theological images of the Bible and the social realities of the contemporary world into a revealing tapestry of truths about the urban experience. Its purpose is to define clearly the mission of the church in the midst of the urban realities and to support well the work of the church in the urban world.

Book Don t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table

Download or read book Don t Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table written by Louie Giglio and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louie Giglio helps you find encouragement, hope, and strength in the midst of any valley as you reject the enemy voices of fear, rage, lust, insecurity, anxiety, despair, temptation, or defeat. Scripture is clear: the Enemy is a liar who will stop at nothing to tempt you into poor decisions and self-defeating mindsets, making you feel afraid, angry, anxious, or defeated. It is all too easy for Satan to weasel his way into a seat at the table intended for only you and your King. But you can fight back. Don't Give the Enemy a Seat at Your Table outlines the ways to overcome those lies so you can find peace and security in any challenging circumstance or situation. With the same bold, exciting approach to Scripture as employed in Goliath Must Fall and his other previous works, pastor Louie Giglio examines Psalm 23 in fresh ways, highlighting verse 5: "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." You can find freedom from insecurity, temptation, and defeat--if you allow Jesus, the Shepherd, to lead the battle for your mind and heart. This spiritual warfare book for those who are leery of spiritual warfare books will resonate with Louie's core Passion tribe as well as with Christians of all ages who want to live a triumphant life in God.

Book excerpt: Book of Psalms - Devotional THE PSALMS A very important part of the Bible. A FIVE FOLD DEVOTIONAL BOOK There are five things to keep in mind when we look at the Psalms. These are covered within the pages of this devotional. But before introducing that, let us see the importance of the book of Psalms in knowing more about our Lord. Look carefully at Luke 24:25-27 and verses 44-45. He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. Jesus used the Psalms many times in His teaching and life. They were much in His thinking. Here are some psalms concerning our Lord: David's greater Son 89 132 Incarnation of Son 8 40 Rejection of Christ 118 78:1-2 Betrayal of Christ 69 109 Death of Messiah & beyond 22 2 Victory over death 16 102 Messiah's marriage & ministry 45 110 Reign of glorious King 72 68 Paul also admonished the believers to make ready reference to the psalms: Ephesians 5:18-20 Colossians 3:16-17.

Book Jewish and Christian Approaches to the Psalms

Download or read book Jewish and Christian Approaches to the Psalms written by Susan Gillingham and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Psalms have resulted in controversies between Jews and Christians over the centuries and it is only from the mid twentieth century onwards that the two traditions have worked side by side in the academy at least. This is one of the very few volumes on the psalms to incorporate scholarship from both these traditions for nearly a century, and the result is a rich celebration of these extraordinary ancient songs. This innovative essay collection draws together internationally renowned Jewish and Christian scholars of the Psalms, with one tradition responding to the other, in areas as diverse as Qumran studies, Medieval Jewish interpretation, Reception History, Liturgical Psalters and Chagall's Church Windows and more recent Literary Studies of the Psalter as a Book. The range of topics chosen will be of interest not only to those specializing in the Psalms but also to others interested more generally in biblical studies. Several musical and artistic representations of selected psalms are also included and the book includes a colour plate section which illustrates several of the chapters.

  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book Clown of the City written by Stephan de Beer and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At opening this book, everything one has learned or thought about “urban ministry” is challenged, and changed. Stephan de Beer offers a fresh, exciting and thoroughly engaging approach. The title is enticing and playful, but the book is a serious grappling with the daunting realities of a shadowed, marginalised, urban life. It does not theorise or pontificate about a concept. The author is not a distant, neutral observer. He is an engaged minister to the people, a struggler in their struggles, prophet to the powerful. This book invites the reader to join the people of the cities under siege by failed policies, empty promises, and disastrous politics, in their struggles for meaningful life, and it makes a powerful, persuasive case. Stephan de Beer has offered us a great gift and a wonderful opportunity to think and hope anew, and differently, about the life, reality, and future of the city.
