Book Citrus Processing in Brazil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citrus Processing in Brazil Classic Reprint written by Shackford Pitcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Processing in Brazil The fortunes of the Brazilian commercial citrus industry were closely identified with the fresh export market for many decades. In 1963, however, the creation of the first modern export-oriented processing plant added a new and profitable dimension to the industry. This development closely followed the 1962 freeze in Florida, prior to which the United States was by far the most important exporter of orange juice concentrate. Many countries, including Brazil, were encouraged by the high prices following the Florida freeze to establish or expand processing industries. While exports from some countries have declined in recent years as production resumed its upward trend in Florida, the production and exportation of concentrated orange juice in Brazil has moved ahead at an unprecedented rate. The availability of abundant supplies of processing fruit plus the ability to produce a competitive product has catapulted Brazil into the forefront as supplier of orange juice concentrate to the world's markets. An adequate supply of oranges for the Brazilian processing plants, almost all of which are located in the State of $50 Paulo, seems assured. Millions of trees have been planted in recent seasons, and nurseries are prepared to supply many more at least over the next 3 years. If yields improve as anticipated, the prospect exists for a very substantial increase in production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Citrus Industry of Surinam Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citrus Industry of Surinam Classic Reprint written by Joseph Henry Burke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Industry of Surinam Surinam, Netherlands Guiana, is on the northeast coast of South America, only 4 degrees above the equator. The Dutch colonized it in 1630, having received it from the British in settlement for New York. Until 1863, when the slaves were liberated, Surinam had a prosperous plantation agriculture producing coffee, sugar, cotton, and other crops for world markets. But when slave labor was no longer available, agricultural exports declined to secondary importance, and now Surinam's most important export is bauxite. Though Surinam still has a few specialty export cr0ps such as rice, coffee, cocoa, citrus, and coco nuts and their products, it has no large agricultural indus tries. These specialty crops probably represent the limit of agricultural opportunity in Surinam. Because of the great difficulties involved in combatting the jungle and draining the soil, most agriculture will continue to be primarily for sub sistence. Thus, in Surinam, citrus production on the subsistence level would be natural; but the production and marketing of citrus that can meet world competition in export markets presents many problems. Book Foreign Agriculture Circular

Download or read book Foreign Agriculture Circular written by U. S. Foreign Agricultural Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: Citrus; July 1966 Exports from the Southern Hemisphere countries in 1966 are expected to re flect this overall increase in production and exceed last year's record large export volume of million boxes. South Africa, by far the largest ex porter in the group, could for the first time reach a lo-million-box status. Australia, a newcomer to the European import scene, will undoubtedly exceed last year's high of million boxes (equiv. 70 lbs.) by several hundred thousand boxes. Despite the reduction in the Brazilian orange crop, supplies in that country are still well above average and sufficiently ample to sustain last year's export volume. Lemons.-the 1966 production of summer lemons in countries other than the United States is expected to be only slightly larger than a year ago million boxes as compared to million boxes in 1965. This year's net in crease is scattered among the smaller producers, with no one country showing an appreciable gain over last season. The summer crop in Italy, the major competitor of California lemons in the European market, is now estimated to be about the same as last year, million boxes. In view of the above, it is not likely that overall volume of lemons moving into export will differ significantly from last year's level of million boxes. Grapefruit.-the grapefruit crop in the major producing countries of the Southern Hemisphere is, in total, only fractionally higher than a year ago. Total output is estimated at h.h million boxes, an increase of about one hundred thousand boxes from that of 1965. Book Oranges

    Book Details:
  • Author : John McPhee
  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2011-04-01
  • ISBN : 0374708703
  • Pages : 149 pages

Download or read book Oranges written by John McPhee and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic of reportage, Oranges was first conceived as a short magazine article about oranges and orange juice, but the author kept encountering so much irresistible information that he eventually found that he had in fact written a book. It contains sketches of orange growers, orange botanists, orange pickers, orange packers, early settlers on Florida's Indian River, the first orange barons, modern concentrate makers, and a fascinating profile of Ben Hill Griffin of Frostproof, Florida who may be the last of the individual orange barons. McPhee's astonishing book has an almost narrative progression, is immensely readable, and is frequently amusing. Louis XIV hung tapestries of oranges in the halls of Versailles, because oranges and orange trees were the symbols of his nature and his reign. This book, in a sense, is a tapestry of oranges, too—with elements in it that range from the great orangeries of European monarchs to a custom of people in the modern Caribbean who split oranges and clean floors with them, one half in each hand.

Book Enzymes in Food Technology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this successful book highlights thewidespread use of enzymes in food processing improvement andinnovation, explaining how they bring advantages. The properties ofdifferent enzymes are linked to the physical and biochemical eventsthat they influence in food materials and products, while these inturn are related to the key organoleptic, sensory and shelf lifequalities of foods. Fully updated to reflect advances made in the field over recentyears, new chapters in the second edition look at the use ofenzymes in the reduction of acrylamide, in fish processing and innon-bread cereal applications such as flour confectionery. Geneticmodification of source organisms (GMO) has been used to improveyields of purer enzymes for some time now but the newer technologyof protein engineering (PE) of enzymes has the potential to producepurer, more targeted products without unwanted side activities, anda chapter is also included on this important new topic. Authorshave been selected not only for their practical working knowledgeof enzymes but also for their infectious enthusiasm for thesubject. The book is aimed at food scientists and technologists, ingredients suppliers, geneticists, analytical chemists and qualityassurance personnel.
