Book Citrus Industry in Brazil with Emphasis on Tropical Areas

Download or read book Citrus Industry in Brazil with Emphasis on Tropical Areas written by Orlando Passos and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter is a review on citrus-producing areas in Brazil with emphasis on the tropical zone. Considering the degrees of latitude, the citrus industry can be classified into four major regions: (1) South, represented by the State of Rio Grande de Sul with temperate climate; (2) S√£o Paulo, Minas Gerais and Paran√° States in the central part of the country, where the major citrus-processing industries are established under subtropical conditions; (3) Amazon basin, the northern part of Brazil around the Equator; and (4) Northeast, the typical tropical region. For each region, data are presented as to the geographical position, climate and soils, area harvested production volume and yield. A strong climatic influence on fruit quality can be observed. There is a tendency for fruits to be smaller in size, but with a longer maturation and life periods on the trees, as they are produced at increasing distances from the equator.

Book excerpt: Citrus is one of the world's major fruit crops, with global availability and popularity contributing to human diets. Citrus fruits are the highest-value fruit crop in terms of international trade. Current annual worldwide citrus production is estimated at over 70 million tons, with more than half of this being oranges. The rise in citrus production is mainly due to the increase in cultivation areas, improvements in transportation and packaging, rising incomes, and consumer preference for healthy foods. Citrus fruit growth and quality are dependent on climatic conditions, in addition to soil type, water availability, cultural practices, and nutrient supply. The book briefly explains the fruit morphology, anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, growth phases, maturity standards, grades, and physical and mechanical characteristics of citrus trees. It also provides the foundation for understanding the growth, harvest, and post-harvest aspects of citrus fruits. Insect pests and diseases, irrigation, nutrition, and rootstocks are also addressed in this book.

Book Research and the Northeast Brazilian Citrus Industry

Download or read book Research and the Northeast Brazilian Citrus Industry written by O. S. Passos and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review is made focussing on the influence of EMBRAPA's (Brazilian Enterprize for Agricultural Research) program on the development of the citrus industry in Northeastern Brazil, one of the poorest regions of the country. This region comprises almost 20% of the total land surface and almost 30% of the country's population and exhibits serious social and economic contrasts. Due to this extensive area (approximately 1,600,000 km(quadrado) and the large range of climates and soils, although the annual rainfall in almost 60% of the total area is less than 750 mm, the export/import balance is always favorable. Neverthless, continually unbalanced growth between north and south has brought several social problems to the country as a whole. Recognizing this situationregarding the citrus industry in the 60's, where the citrus fruits of late ripening varieties that supplied the northeastern markets were exclusively from the State of Sao Paulo, and led by a citrus culture survey made in the Cruz das Almas area in 1961, a research program was started at the National Research Center for Cassava and Fruit Crops in order to improve varieties, extend harvest time and introduce certain cultural practices such as dense spacing. Ten years later a significant change could be observed - virus free and productive clones (nucellar lines) of late varieties like 'Pera' orange became prefered and close spacing (400 trees/ha) had been widely accepted. As a consequence of research results, regarding the mentioned aspects, almost 100,000 ha of citrus have been planted in the Northeast and especially in the States of Sergipe and Bahia.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Industry of Brazil Total orange and tangerine acreage in 1957 is estimated at to 100, 000 acres, of which not over 25, 000 acres mostly in 850 Paulo-are capable of producing export fruit. In 1957, 80 percent of 850 Paulo groves were less than 10 years of age. By 1965, total acreage may increase to 125, 000 acres, primarily in Sao Paulo. Only 30, 000 to 40, 000 acres may be capable of producing export fruit. Most new plantings are on Rangpur lime root. Trifoliate orange, sweet lime, and rough lemon are other roots used. The most important export variety is the late Pera. Early export varieties are the Hamlin and a small navel orange, which has a closed navel. Includes the most current research on citrus genomic information Provides the first detailed description of citrus origin, a new proposal for citrus taxonomy, and a redefinition of the genus Citrus Details citrus challenges including climate change, global disease impacts, and plant improvement strategies

Book Citrus Processing in Brazil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citrus Processing in Brazil Classic Reprint written by Shackford Pitcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citrus Processing in Brazil The fortunes of the Brazilian commercial citrus industry were closely identified with the fresh export market for many decades. In 1963, however, the creation of the first modern export-oriented processing plant added a new and profitable dimension to the industry. This development closely followed the 1962 freeze in Florida, prior to which the United States was by far the most important exporter of orange juice concentrate. Many countries, including Brazil, were encouraged by the high prices following the Florida freeze to establish or expand processing industries. While exports from some countries have declined in recent years as production resumed its upward trend in Florida, the production and exportation of concentrated orange juice in Brazil has moved ahead at an unprecedented rate. The availability of abundant supplies of processing fruit plus the ability to produce a competitive product has catapulted Brazil into the forefront as supplier of orange juice concentrate to the world's markets. An adequate supply of oranges for the Brazilian processing plants, almost all of which are located in the State of $50 Paulo, seems assured. Millions of trees have been planted in recent seasons, and nurseries are prepared to supply many more at least over the next 3 years. If yields improve as anticipated, the prospect exists for a very substantial increase in production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
