Book Citizenship and the Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Citizenship and the Schools Classic Reprint written by Jeremiah W. Jenks and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Citizenship and the Schools The addresses and essays contained in this volume have been prepared at various times and for various purposes during the last fifteen or sixteen years. I am well aware that they show clearly in manner and thought the variety of uses to which they have been put, even in some instances the pressure of the circumstances under which they were written; hut this possibly will not diminish their usefulness, and it has been thought best not to attempt to rewrite them. All of them have a direct bearing upon education, either from the point of view of educational doctrine or from that of school administration. All of them deal more or less, most of them primarily, with the relation of educational work to social and political life. The essay on School-Book Legislation was the outcome of a careful observation of the process of lawmaking in the state of Indiana and is perhaps as much a political as an educational study. Book The Practice of Citizenship

Download or read book The Practice of Citizenship written by Roscoe Lewis Ashley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practice of Citizenship: In Home, School, Business, and Community Education for citizenship is one of the first duties of any self-governing society. The practice of citizen ship is fully as important a duty. Since we learn by doing, we shall never become good citizens simply by studying civic relations and problems, that is, if we do no more than prepare ourselves for future duties and responsibilities. If citizenship were chiefly a matter of voting and of governmental activities, the schools would necessarily limit themselves to preparation for adult citizenship. But citizenship is far more than that. A person is a citizen because he is a member of a nation; but the nation is only the greatest and most important of a large number of civic groups of which all of us are members. A few of these groups, such as the state and municipality, are chiefly political; some of them, such as business organizations, are predominantly eco nomic; but for boys or girls real membership is limited chiefly to two social groups, the home and the school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to Do for Uncle Sam: A First Book of Citizenship The United States Bureau of Education lays emphasis upon the part of the schools in training for citizenship. It urges a new teaching of the subject, beginning with the home, going on to the school, and from there into community relations. The Government asks, also, that work in civics be begun in the elementary schools. The work should embody less of the details of governmental agencies, but focus instead upon the child's own community obligations and activities. Following this thought, and taking up the pro gram of community civics outlined by the Bureau of Education, I have written What to Do for Uncle Sam, a first book in patriotism and citizen ship. At the end of each chapter I have placed questions and suggestions which establish a contact between the classroom and community life. Book American Citizenship Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Citizenship Classic Reprint written by Charles A. Beard and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Citizenship In view of the large number of textbooks on civics already available, some very decided reasons should be forthcoming from those who venture to add another one to the long list. Our first plea in justification of this volume is our belief that the books on government now offered to the schools have certain fundamental defects. An examination of the extensive collection of texts in the Library of Congress, which embraces all of the most recent books on civics, shows that they fall into two groups: those which are formal and legal, and those which are "sociological," in character. The authors of the first group err, in our opinion, in treating government as a multitude of rules already well settled which, when committed to memory, are calculated to make good and wise citizens. The authors of the second group, it seems to us, in their revolt against the mechanistic theory of government, err just as much in minimizing those concrete political and administrative processes by which social work of a public character is accomplished and in emphasizing in civics private activities which are remote from official operations. For example, the principle of the separation of governmental powers, so scorned by the sociological school, is in fact more important, as we try to show, than half of the beneficent enterprises undertaken in the name of modern collectivism. And both groups of books are equally in error in so far as they seem to regard civic life as static or settled rather than dynamic and progressive. Book Course in American Citizenship in the Grades

Download or read book Course in American Citizenship in the Grades written by P. E. McClenahan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Course in American Citizenship in the Grades: For the Public Schools of Iowa The Thirty-Eighth General Assembly passed an act providing for the teaching of American Citizenship in the public and private schools located in the State of Iowa, and providing for an outline for such subjects. In accordance with this act a brief outline was prepared soon after the law was enacted and mailed to all the schools as a guide for the work which was to be done. Then plans were made and a committee was appointed to hold conferences and later select a smaller committee to write the course of study. This outline is the result of the work of that committee and has been officially approved by the Department of Public Instruction and is now the official outline for the course in American Citizenship for the public and private schools in the State of Iowa. It is expected that every County Superintendent in the State will devote some time in the next teachers' institutes to giving the teachers instruction upon this course and explaining the methods by which the best results may be secured. I sincerely hope that this outline may be of much help to the pupils, teachers, parents, and boards of education and that it may result in making better qualified citizens in the State of Iowa. Book Good Citizenship Classic Reprint

Download or read book Good Citizenship Classic Reprint written by Julia Richman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Citizenship For many years instruction in Civics has formed a part of the curriculum of the highest grades in grammar schools and in the lowest grades in high schools. This instruction, aiming to impress upon the pupils the mean ing and importance of the Constitution of the Uni ted States, and the functions of state and municipal government, fails to benefit the child withdrawn from school before he enters the upper grades, and utterly fails to Show to children their personal obligations as little citizens. Investigation has shown that the greatest number of violations of law in large cities are due not so much to disrespect for the authority of the Law as to ignorance of the Law, especially of that part of the Law covered by local ordinances. It is far more important for the welfare of the state that a child should be made to realize his present obligations to the commonwealth than that he should know the qualifications of a Uni ted States senator. The belief that a knowledge of things close at hand should be acquired first, and that such knowledge should be made to include the personal relations of the child to the Law, is rapidly becoming an educational principle. Within recent years New York, Chicago, and other large cities have introducedinto their respective curricula instruction in Civics for the lower grades, Chicago beginning its work in this direction in the first year. A large majority preferred eminence in Scholarship to eminence in athletics. They were ready to take education in arts and letters at its real value. They felt that to gain that was what had brought them here. But College, at best, can give us but a small part of an education. It is only the preface of the book, which she translates for us. Her aim is to let us know why it was written, and for what. What it is comes later. In Emerson's wol'ds' The things taught in colleges and schools are not an educa tion, but the means of education.
